Does a modern equivalent of HyperCard exist?
SuperCard is a direct descendant of hypercard (and even supports hypercard conversion). However, it's a 32 bit app and it looks like they have no plans to transition to 64bit, so you can't run it on modern macs.

Something in a similar vein, although without the easy to use templates, would be the Squeak or Pharo smalltalk systems.

Montreal for a long weekend
Old montreal is very crowded when the weather is nice and feels a lot like a theme park, so I wouldn't sweat not staying there. It's also not where the best restaurants are, instead it's filled with places that remind me of the bad restaurants in Prague's old city, tourist trap kind of overpriced but "fancy" (for the most part, there are some exceptions).

I highly recommend checking out the area around Parc La Fontaine, esp., Avenue Mont-Royal. It's where I… [more]

Help me understand my THC consumtion
The federal loophole making 0.3% d9-thc products not illegal (but are they legal? nobody knows) has opened up a kind of wild west for these products. https://www.3chi.com/ has, I think, a good reputation, and claims tons of lab testing, but for all of that, for every brand, you have to take their word for it.

Am I due royalties from my out of print book by a major publisher?
A book might be "sold out" because they've remaindered the remaining copies so they don't have to hold on to inventory that they don't expect to ever sell, in which case there's very little chance they are holding on to unpaid royalties.

Digital piano for beginners
You should be able to find a used Roland FP-10 for around $400 on marketplaces like Reverb. You'll also need to spring for a sturdy stand. It's a good digital piano. The next model up, the FP-30X, is an excellent digital piano that will meet the needs of someone learning piano for many years. Around that price there's also the Kawai ES-120 which will be good enough for playing everything but the most advanced pieces. These pianos tend to hold their resale pretty well, so if you buy a nicer… [more]

Airplane scam
the barcode on a boarding pass often includes things like the frequent flyer number, the pnr/booking reference number, date of birth etc, which is enough info to get going on a scam against the airline somehow (honestly not sure what you can do besides cancel the flight that’s already about to taxi) so a photo of it might be valuable on its own

Online games involving anonymous cooperation with strangers?
Returnal has a fantastic coop mode. You choose to host or to join a coop session and you're randomly paired with someone to go around fighting the aliens with. It might support microphones but I've never talked to anyone or heard from anyone on it. The coop session lasts until someone leaves or you die (if they die you can continue on without them). Returnal is very hard so that usually means 30 minutes is the upper limit.

Help me improve my Linux development environment?
I'm not 100% sure what you're looking for, but you may be interested in NixOS or Nix flakes. Nix does a lot of things, but one of the best is that it makes it possible to configure software environments fearlessly, knowing you can switch to another set of packages without breaking anything. You can play with and install experimental packages and if you don't like them, just say goodbye, without any worry that your system will ever be left in an inconsistent state.

Help me parse this CSV file
I have a simple approach to this. Parse the CSV line with backslashes as escape characters. If it fails, parse it without. Do that for each line.

Python csv parsing takes a file as input and reads the whole file, but you can trick it to take one line at a time as a "file". Here is some dumb pseudocode, since I can't remember all my python foo

Help me find a vegetable broth I actually like.
Better than buillion "no-chicken base" is my vegan go to, with added kombu leaf (improves mouthfeel, adds glutmates) and one trick is using agar agar. The big thing that meat-based broths have that vegetable broth often lacks is the velvety smooth mouthfeel from the gelatin in the bones and muscles of meat. In carnivorous cooking I often cheat with this by adding gelatin to the stock. Agar agar works very similarly for vegetable stock. You want stock that turns to jelly in the fridge.

An HP chromebase is maybe an ideal choice here: https://www.newegg.com/p/1VK-001E-4DSZ9. What's ideal here about a chromebook/chromebox is you'll never ever ever have to come over and fix the system becuase some kind of terrible spyware or virus has landed (unless you consider chrome spyware, which, ymmv)

How is this electric guitar tone described?
Definitely digital distortion of some kind. Sounds very "square wave" to me, but the track is also heavily produced and i suspect the guitar is recorded directly through a pre-amp by the audio interface, through a pedal chain or maybe with distortion plugins, instead of a microphone recording an amplified guitar. The gecs work hard to have a distinctive sound so I suspect there's a lot of tinkering with a few layers of eq and effects to get this just where they wanted it.

Unlock MacBook with Watch only at certain times?
I'm not on a mac right now to be able to test this idea, but I suspect that the apple watch unlock requires bluetooth and wifi to be on on the macbook. Are your time machine backups going to a wired drive? If so, you could set up a script, run by cron, to turn off the wifi and bluetooth interfaces at night and turn them back on in the morning.

DIY remedies for oral thrush?
It sounds like the penicillin has killed off the biome in your mouth that normally keeps candidiasis at bay. Talk to the doctor who prescribed you the penicillin. You could try chlorhexidine mouthwash and a fairly constant chewing of xylitol gum, which might help reduce it but probably won't eliminate it.

I, personally, would not tell prof B that I had "chosen" prof A. I'd just show up and if I run into them, be personable and talk about it if they ask. But also, and maybe this is just differences in your field, but until you're at the stage where you're developing your prospectus you have plenty of opportunity to pick a different advisor. Since you'll already be a bit west of MKE, I'd suggest going to House on the Rock for some outsider art weirdness.

There's a fair amount of skiing in Wisconsin. No double black diamond or anything but skiing nonetheless. I don't have any recommendations on ski resorts but there's a few near both Milwaukee and Madison.

How to work enough and not too much
It's important to keep a list of the things you've accomplished so you can use them in reviews, moments of self-promotion, but generally in situations like this your supervisors themselves don't really want to worry about how you're spending your time. It takes a lot of work to keep a close eye on direct reports. They just want you to get the results they need to impress *their* supervisors or meet their goals. If you're doing the things you are tasked with and regularly accomplishing goals,… [more]

Chatfilter: What are your COVID precaution plans?
These days my strategy is: get the booster and flu vaccine when they come out, probably in mid October to cover the fall/winter as best as I can. Otherwise, if I am feeling ill in any way, try not to go out, and if I really *have* to go somewhere, mask up. No mask otherwise since nobody else is wearing a mask anymore I don't really see the point especially since I know that the N95s I have do not have a good seal on me. Somewaht caffeinated philosophy in action
I don't have a good summary of my thoughts on this topic. It's an incredibly knotty problem, philosophically. Climate change has definitely influenced decisions we've mulled about leaving Milwaukee, for the same reasons as Chicago above (that and home prices). Best method for validating email addresses?
When I had to build tools for this for a big production site, we investigated it pretty intensely. There's really no foolproof way to verify that an email is "valid" in the sense that emails sent to it will not bounce, except by sending an email and seeing if it bounces. The strategy that works for 99% of cases is:

New York non-resident tax withholdings
the company paying you should be withholding NYS tax from your paycheck already. The trick here is to get the state you’re a resident of to credit you for the taxes paid in new york. It was easy enough for me in Wisconsin but it’s different for every state. Yes, that's stale beans. Which is fine. It won't make you sick or anything. America loved stale coffee until like 1999. It's still caffeinated. But it also sounds like it's too finely ground for a french press, which makes it tough to press. You might want to pour it through a filter instead of pressing since having to force the french press tends to raise the risk of it all exploding out (not necessarily breaking the glass, but a coffee volcano).
