I was told there would be no additional math
A ratio is just a fraction. A relation of one number to another. The relation stays the same so long as both terms are divided or multiplied by the same amount. So 1:2 is 2:4 is 4:8 is 50:100 etc.

You can read more about it here: at Khan Academy

When recipes call for chicken broth...
First: some people will claim there is a distinction between "broth" and "stock". I have never been able to nail down this distinction, so I consider them conceptually the same.

Sometimes, people think broth means: the chicken cooked by itself, while stock means: the chicken broth + aromatics and herbs, but I don't believe this is a genuinely hard and fast definition.

With that out the way, boxed chicken broth is generally: a… [more]

i need to stop bidding for approval
Ideally, your spouse should show interest in the things you're interested in, and also give you some amount of praise for things like doing chores.

If you say "I found this cool thing" wanting your partner to also say "that *is* cool!" is perfectly normal because it reaffirms your feeling and gives it reality.

For chores, I mean, yes, it's true that these are just things we have to do to keep living and we aren't children who… [more]

Help me get caught up on web front end dev trends and best practices
I'd say the biggest trend right now in frontend dev is the "Flux architecture", typically implemented with redux, or the "State Action Model" or SAM pattern.

The idea is that UI components are conceived as functions that take state as input and return the rendered view as the output. Controls on the UI (buttons, inputs) don't manipulate state themselves, but trigger "actions" that are processed by mutators which are divorced from the view… [more]

Program or platform for making complex custom lists
Airtable is very powerful and allows you to link different kinds of data, and also supports creating forms that you could use to easily do the data entry part, and so on. I think it *would* fit your needs, but I don't know that I would want to use it for this project myself because once you've got all your data in airtable and have everything working the way you want, you're locked in. And what if airtable disappears/is acquired and discontinued?

unpaid credit card went to collection agency, too late to undo?
Yes fuck banks. But that’s a lot of debt. Definitely consider bankruptcy. If you have no chance of earning the significant amount of cash you’ll need to resolve 30k+ in cc debt then bankruptcy is probably your best option. And bankruptcy is hip! 50 cent does it all the time

Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL extension
Do you have a stale "php.ini" file on your server that might be configured for the old php and now is telling php 7 the wrong things? Try renaming/deleting it so that you're using the default php configuration

I can think of some other ways to solve this but they would require shell access and the ability to install programs on the server.

Relocating from LA to Chicago. What to expect?
The most unexpected thing to get accustomed to in Chicago is the truly remarkable and depressing degree of segregation. Most neighborhoods are monocultures and people keep to themselves, which means you can spend years of your life there barely exposed to the incredible poverty that millions of Chicagoans live in.

Many Chicagoans do have cars and for those living in the well-serviced by transit north-side neighborhoods it's a continual bafflement to me. So you might find… [more]

Building a webapp in 2018
Ruby on Rails is another option that includes the kitchen sink.

Laravel is nice for getting the boilerplate out of the way for many use cases. You basically get authentication out of the box, for example, although I have huge quarrels with some major design choices, that's not really that important.

Laravel is deeply influenced by Rails, so both are good options.

Whichever "backend" option you go with, I highly… [more]

Chicago 1) Shopping 2) Eating and 3) Interview Spot
There are like 100 awesome restaurants in the West Loop, just steps from the loop. Within walking distance if that's an option, but also a cheap cab ride.

I'd get a reservation at Girl and the Goat right now since tables go fast for dinner.

Add a bunch of self-signed certs to a Windows host
This is likely possible with some scripting. I'd start here for grabbing the certs: serverfault. Now, here's the hard part. It looks like using Windows PowerShell makes it possible to install certificates programmatically. But they have to be converted into something called a 'PfxCertificate' and I have no clue about the credentials required (it seems like installing a cert is something that should not be possible without user confirmation), my windows-fu stops around 2005 so *shrug*.… [more]

Books about Florida
Finding Florida is essential.

Hiassen and J.D. MacDonald have been mentioned (the latter is pretty sexist stuff in a 1970s kind of way, but it does really feel like Florida).

Little known piece of the Gulf Coast is Ybor City Chronicles, a book about the pre-Castro cuban immigrants to Tampa.

Cheapest way to move clothes, books, etc., from city to city?
Not the cheapest, but the easiest for the carless: use a storage cube of some kind, like ABF U-Pack or PODS. They pick up and deliver your stuff curbside, then once it's empty they take it away. Otherwise, I'd go with the find a friend who will drive the van.

Should I get a dog? Graduate school edition.
A dog is a perfectly managable responsibility for a grad student. Once the puppy phase is over, and your dog is house trained, dogs are pretty low-touch. Just love them, feed them, and exercise them, and they're happy. I'd suggest some training classes early on if you can manage it, to give you some more control over the dog.

But the conflict here isn't grad school, it's your wife. If she doesn't want anything to do with the dog, then I'd be wary of bringing one on board.

How to NOT pass out due to someone else's surgery
I used to faint every time my blood was taken, and also when I was around medical procedures, or in fact, one time I fainted just because my girlfriend at the time called me to let me know she had been in a car accident and was bleeding and going to the hospital. That time I passed right out in the living room, hit my head on the coffee table and woke up with a worse head injury than she ended up having from her crash. Quick PHP array question
Thanks for the advice. I was under the impression that array_map is slower than a for loop, but I will give it a try!

array_map() is implemented internally as a foreach over the array, with a small amount of extra overhead for executing the callback (the overhead is basically just the overhead of a C function call, so essentially nothing at all). It's basically the exact same thing as a normal foreach from a performance standpoint.

That's a lot of drinking for me, and I like to drink. That's like vacation in the Virgin Islands level drinking. Makes total sense to be wary of it.

Fair warning: It's going to be tough for him to understand, since you met in a drinking environment and he probably thinks he found his match who can meet him drink for drink and make him feel unselfconscious about drinking so much. I know this is wrong. I can't say why. It drives me bonkers.
"The above graphic" sounds fine to me, although I admit "The below graphic" does sound a little strange. But I think it's grammatically fine.

In English you can place the adverb almost anywhere in the sentence (including splitting the infinitive). The consequence is a change in emphasis and sometimes meaning, but it's all valid. Some grammarians might challenge me on this, but this is a descriptivism/prescriptivism fight, I guess. There is no one true… [more]

CookFilter: Turkey legs. Difficulty: Forgot to brine.
How are you cooking them? I'd pat them very dry with paper towels. Then, if you're baking, I'd what Cook's Illustrated calls a "reverse sear": get them up to temp by baking at the normal temperature, then put them under the broiler for a few minutes to get the skin nice and crispy.

Alternatively, put some butter in a frying pan, and fry the skin at a high heat, then bake them like normal.

You'll get crispy skin with high heat, it just… [more]

Which writers are taking us to "vertiginous heights"?
I'm not 100% sure what you're after, but Marlon James' A Brief History of Seven Killings might be up your alley. Anne Enright's work, maybe? John Banville certainly goes "all out" in his English. Eleanor Catton's The Luminaries has a more workshopped feel but it's an incredibly ambitious and successful and excellent piece of writing. If you're less concerned about contemporary writers, then John Barth (esp., The Sot-Weed Factor) and Robert Coover.

I would buy it once I get to Germany. You can get a prepaid one, if I remember they had places in the airport to buy one.

As to money: talk to your bank about getting a card with a very low currency conversion fee. You can also have the bank order Euros for you, but I find it more convenient to use a card (provided by my bank, PNC at the time) at the ATMs to withdraw euros.

Question about grad school, loans and work
If you can finish the program without taking on debt, then that's the best financial decision for two reasons: First, you won't have an employment gap, and second, you won't have debt. Debt sucks, and you can never get rid of student loan debt except by paying it off. My understanding is a terminal master's de facto disqualifies you from most PhD programs. You're damaged goods. They don't want the investment. So finishing is not an option.

I would say that this isn't the case, especially if you want to move into a different field. If your letters of rec are good, and you know your stuff, then it won't hurt you. "Fit" matters a lot. But then, you say, "My grad school grades are shit.… [more]

Cooking oil for medium heat and occasional frying
The idea that you're not supposed to fry things in olive oil at a high heat is more or less a myth. I high-heat (around 350degrees) deep fry in olive oil, and also get it super hot in the pan when searing meat or cooking eggs. It definitely smokes, but hey, I turn the fire alarm off for this. But, it does impart a unique (and I think pleasant) flavor. And quality extra-virgin olive oil is expensive. For more extended deep frying, and to get that classic fried flavor, it's canola oil for deep… [more]

Ottolenghi's Cauliflower Cake is simply scrumptuous and makes a pretty center piece if you prepare it in the springform pan (I amp it up further with soy sauce and by cooking the cauliflower with Kombu to get some natural MSG). Vegetarian status: 7 eggs and a bunch of parmesan cheese.

You didn't put a price limit, so I'm going to go wild and suggest the KUL ES 87. If you have a chance to snag a new one at a serious discount, I would do it. I don't think it's even remotely unethical to do so, and can't imagine what the ethical quandary would be.
