What is the best cordless vacuum?
We have a V8 "Animal" and it's very good at cleaning up after our extremely hairy Great Pyrenees. Every once in a while it gets a little clogged up and you have to fish out a clump of hair, but it opens easily and usually only takes a second, and I think we probably have just about most extreme hair-vacuuming conditions you could have with this massive shedding furball.

Aging cheese for a long time
Hooks ages cheddar for up to 20 year s. I have tried the 15 year and it is incredible. I wish I had a time machine because i’m far too impatient to do something like that myself. This is just to say that some cheeses can be aged for very very long

A nuance of the meaning . .
in the first case, “yourself” is the object of the verb. it’s the thing you are being asked to imagine. in the second case it’s part of a propositional phrase and is incomplete. you could say something like “please imagine to yourself winning the lottery”. it just means that the imagining should take place within yourself. it’s kind of weird because to whom else would you imagine something?

How long will the iPhone 13 mini be for sale on Apple's website?
It's difficult to know. Almost certainly the latest they will be available will be the release of the iPhone 15 next fall. But they could disapppear from the store before then, if Apple has stopped manufacturing them entirely and they run out of stock. They will probably still be there for the holiday season. (By the way, it's my favorite phone I've ever owned and I too am super annoyed they are no longer making "minis", although battery life could be better). They will likely start… [more]

Crossing the border with Sudafed
sudafed is not a prescription drug but there are laws that require recording the purchase in a database, requiring id, and limiting the amount that one person can buy over the counter per month. having a large amount (like more than 3 or 4 boxes) is not illegal in most states but will arouse suspicion. one standard box? not a problem at all. i would cross the border with a single box without hesitation

What is Nature’s Delight by Alco for ceramics?
they appear to be a defunct home goods company. heres an archive of their now gone website.. Later archive snapshots show they were bought by Anchor. The place to go for more by them is replacements.com. i’ve also had good luck finding vintage ceramics on etsy, of all places.

Where to learn more about India?
are never Bombay

FWIW I have heard Bombay from a few different immigrant friends and coworkers, so much so that I felt like I was being a white weirdo liberal by saying Mumbai. My friend told me that the Mumbai change is connected to right wing, Hindu nationalist movements in Indian politics, and saying Bombay is a way of distinguishing yourself from that. So it seems like a fraught issue so I would ask first and then use the name they use for the city they're from.

Traveling to Barcelona next week - what are some musts?
I am pretty indifferent to the Gaudí stuff, it's a lot of waiting in line, but other people seem to love it. For me, Barcelona is first and foremost one of if not the greatest culinary city in Europe today. The food there is just incredible. Just off the top of my head I'd say don't neglect:

Bar del Pla
La Cova Fumada
Quimet i Quimet (maybe old hat by now but still incredible)

Thoughts on abortion. Am I missing something?
i think your assessment on the morality of abortion is way off. But we can make the argument from a purely practical standpoint:

if abortions are not legal, they happen anyway, even if there is access to birth control. for a lot of reasons: money, living in conditions (with men or parents etc. who would find out about regular use of birth control), just being ashamed, or hell just being absent minded. Even if someone takes birth control, they can become pregnant. the… [more]

Is it possible for such a career to exist?
there are a lot of entry level software development positions like this that you can get with only a bit of programming knowledge. When I started I had no credentials, nor degree in anything tech related. My first job in the industry I got by bluffing that I knew what I was doing, and while it paid "poorly" for the time and industry (40k about 7.5 years ago), it was the first step to a series of increasingly much better jobs. So, if you can spend a few months self-teaching yourself how… [more]

the lack of oil may have incentivized research into battery technology earlier and they might have effective batteries for driving machines like that. imagine an electric car battery with thousands of miles of range, solar charged. probably plant based oils for lubrication.

There is an apparent causal link between dropping out of highschool early and going on to commit crimes. Raising the dropout age would likely have an impact.

Did Dr. Martens ever address their past?
The inventor was a Wehrmach doctor, which is enough for me to call him a Nazi. I don't think we have any easily available information about his sentiments about the races, but given the time and place, we can venture a guess that he at least played along. It's a guarantee that the words "Heil Hitler" came out of his mouth more than a few times. Best practices for setting up Web accounts for a small business
you should definitely use separate autogenerated passwords and then use a tool like 1password or lastpass (I prefer 1pass) to manage passwords. As well as 2 factor auth!

I would suggest setting up a domain and using fastmail so you can have admin@yournonprofit.org. At $5/user + maybe $20 a year for a domain, this solution is pretty affordable.

I can't speak to how to name the accounts, but in big corps emails like accounting@ and finance@ are not at all unusual.

Risk of driving with small amount of edibles in KY
following the rules of the road? white? edibles? I think your chances of getting caught are pretty minor. Chances of being pulled over are pretty low if you're following the rules of the road. Even if pulled over, the chance is low for you that they'll want to search, and even lower that they have a drug sniffing dog. To be 100% confident, what i would do is put the edibles in double wrapped ziplocks, put the ziplocks inside of a mostly full can of cheap coffee, and put that in a bag in the back.… [more]

Cross platform 3D basically means using OpenGL. I've seen this free book https://learnopengl.com/ recommended highly. Is the wallstreet trapper a scam?
it might be worth pointing out to your friend that, except in the cases where hedgies are doing insider trading, or just have dumb luck, hedge funds do worse or just about the same as simple index funds like Vanguard. Does soundlike your passport has worn to the point where *something* about it is off. No telling what! Unless you carry the passport daily for regular international travel outside of Canada and Mexico, I'd suggest getting a passport card to carry instead and leaving your passport safely at home. Cheaper to replace if it gets damaged, and easier to port around.

Is it safe to eat rice left in the rice cooker overnight?
The can I eat here is a question of probabilities. You will likely be fine 99 out of 100 times that you do this. One out of 100 times you will get terrible food poisoning and regret it. This 1 out of 100 happened to me (leaving guacamole out, not rice, but the same kind of thing) and it sucked so bad I will never take another chance. So my vote would be: no, there's bacteria in there!

I want the opposite of loud
What you'd need is some kind of stereo attenuator: like this one. You'd place it in between the lines you run to the speakers. Of course, you'd have to hide it somehow to keep people from just turning up the volume on the attenuator.

You might also be able to find someone with electronics wizardry to modify the volume control on a stereo amplifier (esp. if analog) to give it a lower maximum?

Maybe other solutions exist... Just having smaller… [more]

Oh, also, a lot of powered speakers have their own volume controls on the back. For example, these: https://www.krkmusic.com/Studio-Monitors/ROKIT-5-G4 which sound great. You can force a low maximum volume with the dial on the back there, so it won't matter what volume they set on their playback device.

Bathroom exhaust fan not working, act 2.
Exhaust fans to nowhere are a pretty classic shortcut for cheap renovators/house flippers, although any inspector should pick up on it right away. Maybe only some of the units have actual ducts and that's how they got away with it.
