Moving back to Mid-West...alternatives to Chicago?
I justed moved to Milwaukee after living in a number of cities (Chicago -> Pittsburgh -> Atlanta -> New Orleans -> Albany) and I reallllllly reallllly like MKE. I mean I love Chicago, and PGH, but Milwaukee is really nice. It's much better than I expected it to be. Although, two downsides; the job market here is not that solid (I work remote for a company on the west coast so that doesn't matter to me right now), and it's got all the segregation and racism of Chicago only maybe… [more]

If I can only go to one Chicago restaurant - which one should it be?
I'd go to the The Publican. Great food, casual atmosphere, and not at all the pinkies-up caviar option that I'd actually recommend

Is Google Project Fi a dead end?
Although you do need a Nexus/Pixel phone to activate your Fi account, once it's activated, you can stick the voice SIM in any other unlocked phone and it will work so long as that phone can access T-Mobile (and maybe Sprint?). You won't get the cool network switching features, but, hey, you can use an iPhone with Fi this way. I did this and ordered a free data-only sim for my Nexus 6, since usually I only need the network switching so I can keep mobile data on the highway for turn-by-turns.… [more]

Help stop our going-out addiction!
Although I hate their insane packaging and bad labor policies, maybe try something like Blue Apron? It's definitely cheaper than going out, and makes the cooking a little bit easier since it cuts out the parts I find most stressful: recipe selection and shopping.

Also, when we're tired but don't want to order takeout, beans and rice is a pretty reliable and super easy meal if you have a rice cooker. Nthing all the instant-pot, slow-cooker advice above, as well.

Visiting Chicago Marathoners Seek Eating Recommendations
Another recommend for Chicago style pizza is Damenzo's in Little Italy, although it's not a nice sitdown kind of joint.

The West Loop is the superhot dining destination right now, and very accessible from Mag Mile (Little Goat is there). Another place there for lighter fare: Bad Hunter (actually it's right next door to Au Cheval), which is one of my favorite places to eat in Chicago right now.

A number of other great places to eat come to mind… [more]

Should I do a postdoc in my PhD adviser's new university?
Teaching experience is still relatively unimportant in the tenure track. If your advisor is a top researcher in their field, then continuing to work with them on a post-doc could be a boost if it means getting your name on some publications in significant journals. If you don't have any other options, it looks better on your CV, generally, to go on to a postdoc than to take an Instructor/Adjunct position. Adjunct positions have basically zero prestige, whereas a postdoc is hard to come by. If… [more]

Looking for a Nabokov quote
Is this what you're thinking of:

On Translating Eugene Onegin

What is translation? On a platter

A poet’s pale and glaring head,

A parrot’s screech, a monkey’s chatter,

And profanation of the dead.

The parasites you were so hard on

Are pardoned if I have your pardon,

O, Pushkin, for my stratagem:

Just bought a new iMac and I’m looking for a second screen
You'll probably want a 4k screen for sure, so you don't feel like you're staring at two different universes between the iMac display and the second display.

The Dell screens are great. I also love this screen: Viewsonic VP2780 4K.

When you get a USB-C to HDMI cable or adapter, make very sure it supports 4K @ 60hz. A lot of adapters out there (including apple's own usb-c to hdmi multiport av adapter!) only support 4K output at 30hz. I've had a… [more]

So the Dell 34inch has a resolution of 3440 x 1440 Resolution and the Mac has 5120‑by‑2880 how is that going to work together?

You've got the 5K iMac? So the 4K display won't look quite as magically sharp, although it will still be very sharp. You can alternatively splurge and get the 5K LG Ultrafine that apple sells on their own store (over your budget by about $300). macOS uses display scaling to seamlessly scale your apps (fonts, images and all) to… [more]

grows like a weed
-Light: plants are in full sun and I've read that 12 dark/12 light hours per day triggers flowering, but I'm not sure if that's true. They are, in fact, flowering. Is there some magical requirement about light?

The requirement isn't magical, it's related to the seasons and called photoperiodism. Longer days (less than 12 hours of darkness) mean summer. Shorter days mean fall. Cannabis is a short-day flowering plant, and won't produce flowers until it thinks it's fall.
posted to Ask MetaFilter by dis_integration at 7:35 AM on September 14, 2017
If they're bright enough, yeah, they will mess up the darkness period. Indoor growers that don't want to use continuous light (expensive! hot!) use short bursts (several minutes at a time) of brightness to keep their plants in a vegetative state after the 12 hours of light. Basically you want nothing brighter than the full moon on the plants at night for more than a minute or so. Or at least that's the conventional pot-wisdom.

What's living in Tampa like?
Tampa on the whole is one of the least walkable places in the United States, but you can get a little taste of a pleasant urban existence in some (pricey) neighborhoods like Hyde Park. Clearwater has nowhere walkable since the downtown is dominated by scientology fronts. Dunedin has a nice little downtown although you'll run out of new places to try in about a week. I like Safety Harbor a lot, it has a more walkable vibe, and it's very close to causeway access so you could get to Tampa easily… [more]

...did Anthony Bourdain ever visit Berlin?
Berlin has great Turkish food, both the doener kebab variety at u-bahn stations and stuff a little higher end.

It's the perfect time of year to head to Prater Garten in Prenzl. Berg for the real Biergarten experience.

Berlin has a huge international food scene. It's not Barcelona but it's pretty good. By far my favorite city in Europe.

October is also a great time for Biergärten, just arm yourself with a cozy sweater: edit, actually it looks like Pratergarten closes at the end of Sept, but they have an indoor restaurant, though it won't be the same without the Chestnut trees.

Yeah this made me feel pretty weird and uncomfortable and you're not wrong to get a bad vibe from it. It's not subverting anything, the whole joke is that she's a big woman. But yeah, arguing about it on facebook is probably a dead end. Instead I'd just watch Melissa McCarthy's Spy which is a genuinely funny movie involving a plus size woman doing incongruous physical feats (not that it doesn't have some problems otherwise).

How can I go to job interviews when I'm working office hours?
Use whatever leave you have. I'd have no compunction about calling in "sick" when I feel fine if doing so would help me secure a better job. I've never been through an interview process that only required one interview (maybe this is different in Britain and of course depends on the industry), so you might also have to plan on taking off another day (at least) if your first interview goes well. Help a procrastinator out: Solar eclipse glasses version
I'm in a similarly eclipse-glasses free state. It sounds like you might be able to buy glasses at Lowes/Home Depot and maybe Toys 'R' Us, but those might also be out of stock. Instead of running around, this weekend I'm going to go the old fashioned way, and build a pinhole projector to view the eclipse safely.

Is there a way to fly & see the full eclipse? From the Philly/Balt area?
So you just want to fly into an airport and view it from the airport?

Charleston International looks like it will be smack dab in the middle of the path of totality, but I've never been to the airport so don't know if you can get a good view from the parking lot or whatever.

The Columbia Regional Airport in MO is also in the path. Or you could fly to St Louis, rent a car, and drive ~30 miles south and be right in it. Then drive back, fly home.

Charleston will be the furthest east in the US that you can see it, and so the latest in the day, so it's a good bet if you're worried about timing.

Bywater probably won't flood but you'll have to get there first, and that might be tricky, especially since it sounds like a snafu has shut down the city's pumping system. I would be jealous but I would deal with it. As others have said, pens are very personal and choosing one for someone is hard. I'm a big fountain pen user when writing by hand and I would much rather use an inexpensive Lamy or Kaweco pen than an $800 Mont Blanc. I'd seriously doubt that any company would add extra expensive hormones that they don't list in the ingredients (also putting testosterone in a pill makes it effectively an illegal steroid), but in any case, I'd stick to the classics, like Nodoz or Jetalert, for your pill-form caffeination needs.

We often cook together, watch a TV show that we're both following, play cards and, armed with wine and food, go over our days, complain about our working lives and advise each other about how to deal with the problems that working life entails. That kind of thing. But some nights we just keep to ourselves, read books, and go to bed.

My sexual harasser is running for office. Help?
I don't think there's anything vindictive or petty about wanting to expose a sleazeball who wants to accrue more power to himself.

But, weigh carefully the possible consequences for yourself. If this is a national office and he's a major candidate, your anonymity is not safe and they're likely to drag you through the mud to defend him. It's not going to be fun, and I think your own selfcare is at least on an equal level with any obligation to expose and prevent future harm.

Yow. There's your problem. 2gb of ram just doesn't cut it anymore (no macbook comes with less than 8gb by default anymore).

Upgrade the RAM (it probably supports up to 8gb) and then Upgrade the drive to an SSD, and it will run a lot faster.

We also just dealt with a landlord that wanted this (ended up not signing the lease because of this and various reasons). Our rental insurance company (Travelers), when contacted, outright refused to add the landlord as an additional insured, which gave us a good bargaining position, and was also a sure sign that adding your landlord as an additional insured is kinda shady.

I would rate them as safer than public ATMs, but not that safe. So-called "juice jacking" is a definite possibility, although I don't know if any actual compromised charging stations have been discovered in the wild.

For something like a stadium seat with an integrated port, they'd have to remove the port and install a replacement port, which might be difficult to pull off while a game of footy is ongoing. Or might be easy, depending on how the port is designed.
