How To Live Forever
Why am I not a grownup? I’ve been here for so many years.
I feel seen.

Didn't read much of her work, but greatly enjoyed what I have read.

the Keys, in particular, do not deserve him.

Yes.

The center of my own town is a notable local museum, which tracks. I tried it on the largest city close to me, Newark, NJ, and it took me to the intersection of Broad and Market, roughly in the south-middle of downtown. It's mostly shopping and restaurants around there, with the Prudential Center arena a block or two away.

Art, games, music, zines, and a list of fictional badgers
I've been browsing the Artist Alley since it launched and have been impressed by the diversity of projects and such there. The "doing a bit" tag is the most fun (and the one I'm most likely to use myself in the future; I currently don't have any projects I feel the need to advertise). Artist Alley overall seems to be fairly popular, and I hope it helps shore up Cohost's finances a bit.

Passersby were amazed at the unusually large amounts of synergy
Seeing Oxford commas on Global Tetrahedron's About page in between all the bits about bloodthirstiness and embezzlement warms my heart.

I love it when fans have the money to do this sort of thing.

I want the stories of Herbert Kornfeld's shortie, who doubtless works for them muthafuckas in Payabo by now.

My husband and I still joke about reeceevin' and Applebeez all these years later.

How social networks prey on our longing to be known
Never stopped being pseudonymous in public social spaces online (LinkedIn being the one exception for practical reasons, but I stopped using that a long time ago). The shift to presenting your "real" self weirded me out.

10 Years of Jeremy Parish's Works Projects
I stopped following the Retronauts podcast and Parrish himself when he, without warning, spoiled the big, dramatic bits of the first Klonoa without warning. This was around the time of the Wii remake, when Klonoa was still an obscure franchise that very few people had played. At the time, I had become a fan of Klonoa via the second game, and was really looking forward to playing the first, which I hadn't before. I immediately shut off the podcast after the first spoiler, and later found out the… [more]

The episode was not about Klonoa generally and was framed in the context of the remake-- plus there was no reason to drop those spoilers so specifically.

Tokyo’s Public Toilets Will Leave New Yorkers Sobbing
There's one good one in NYC, mentioned in some of the links too.

That is a very good one, but it's always busy. Whenever I'm in Midtown, my preferred restroom stops are in the Rockefeller Center concourse (also frequently busy, but seemingly less so than Bryant Park) and any of the ones in Macy's on 34th St. They're not as fancy, but tend to be clean and no-nonsense. I really wouldn't mind seeing more Bryant Park-style restrooms elsewhere in the city, though.

OJ Simpson dead at 76

posted to MetaFilter by May Kasahara at 7:51 AM on April 11, 2024
There's a surface story here about a guy who killed his wife and got away with it in court. That story sucks and maybe comes to one conclusion now that OJ's dead. But there's a deeper cultural story here that is what we're all thinking about. About celebrity and the legal system and racial politics.

Chris Rock did a great bit about it back in 1996:

“That was all about race.” That shit wasn’t about race. That shit was about fame.… [more]

Dependence is the ultimate freedom
In essence - and I think this is why the review upset and angered me - I think that the reviewer is one of a number of people that are really missing out on a real swell of what could be anti-capitalist anger here, and because they're dismissing it as 'ugh, gross, reactionary gender politics, everyone involved must be gross', they're driving those people further to the right and missing out on genuine populist anger at the failures of industrial capitalism.… [more]

Freak Earthquake Shakes the East Coast
Morris County checking in, about 20 miles from the epicenter! The husband and I had spent roughly a decade in California's Bay Area before moving back to Jersey in 2019. When we heard the house rattling this morning, it felt so much like the earthquakes we had experienced then that that was my first guess, but I couldn't believe it. We looked it up afterwards and sure enough.

Weird that both horrible wildfire smoke and earthquakes would follow us here.

Developer looking to merge homes, farming into agrihoods
I'm all for this, but it's a bit of a hobby of mine to read these types of press-releases and watch developers slowly, ever so carefully, avoid the word 'co-op'.

Yeah, I was reading this and thinking, "this is basically the community garden/food co-op model, right?" Never heard the term "agrihood" before, but it does sound like developer marketing-speak.

I heard about this last night, via a friend who's much more into Western comics than I am. I've had Hip Hop Family Tree sitting on my "to read" pile for years, which I picked up after reading a few entries on Boing Boing. No way I'll be able to read more of it now. As my friend noted, there's just too much "ick" here. It's Alec Holowka all over again.

An Infamous Anime Genre Comes To English

I actually like some modern isekai, though the good ones are few and far between. Also, some older ones, like Magic Knight Rayearth, have held up fairly well.

I found last year's Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon rather droll.

Yeah, that one was pretty good! A manga/light novel reviewer I follow found it better than he had expected, and the same turned out to be true for the anime. One aspect of it that I particularly liked is that the main character is a grown-ass adult who just happened to be a vending machine otaku before Truck-kun sends him to the other world. His… [more]

Good thing they mentioned Weird NJ, the American gold standard for folklore zines, otherwise I would've chucked that entire article down Shades of Death Road.

The Weird NJ guys were also responsible for a (now mostly out of print) series of books called Weird US, which included entries for many states.

Babar is not quite happy
I had no idea he was still around. Along with various Dr. Seuss titles, I would check out the Babar books from my local library constantly when I was a kid. Later, as an adult, I bought The Art of Babar from a used bookstore on a whim. Of course, I'm well aware of the Babar books' problematic aspects now, but even as a kid, I knew these were older stories, with all that entails.

Also, elephants were one of my favorite animals when I… [more]

As a longtime collector of other things, reading about collecting in general tends to be fun and interesting, so thanks for this post!

The book club problem seems unique to this hobby; there are budget reissues for other collectibles (the PlayStation "Greatest Hits" budget line comes to mind for video games), but they are typically very easy to spot. However, just like with book club editions, some video game budget reissues can be valuable.… [more]

—You got the wrong guy, pal.
The whole "Minute Nine" thing is a bit weird. Apparently there's a whole series of these? I know that a lot of screenplays are written to the page and thus to the minute, and I'm left wondering if there's a scriptwriting beat at minute nine that is taught in classes?

I took a scriptwriting class as part of a media arts major in university. Pacing by the page is definitely a standard practice (iirc, the goal is one minute per page, including… [more]

There's truly no such thing as a bad mini egg
When I was younger, I liked the Hershey's mini eggs quite a bit. Never as much as Cadbury's, but they were still legit.

I haven't had the Hershey's mini eggs in years, though. Can't say for sure if they're still good. I mainly stick to the Cadbury ones (and having discovered Lindt chocolate rabbits last year, those too).

Toward a New Ameri-canon
I agree with some others here that Watchmen is a poor choice, and that Maus or The Dark Knight Returns would be good alternatives-- especially Maus, which is just as influential as the other two, and has aged better than either one of them.

As for the other graphic novels on the list, the Will Eisner entry is fine, but I've never even heard of Sabrina before. I would've gone with Black Hole, personally.

Dragon Ball wasn't my first exposure to anime, but it was an early one which has stuck with me. I'm an even bigger fan of Dragon Quest, and have numerous figures of characters and monsters from the series, plus plushies and other merch featuring the iconic Slime. I'm playing Yakuza: Like a… [more]

If the name of your movie is also the name of a character in said movie, it should be disqualified from this analysis. Barbie? Fucking It??? Come on.

True, but the list of movies where the name of the title character is only said once throughout the whole film is fascinating.
