The Cutest List to Argue Over

Cinnamoroll is currently in the lead in the 38th annual Sanrio Character Ranking, and was the reigning champion for the past three years. Will Cinnamoroll hold onto this position, or will current second place-holder Pompompurin take the crown? Perhaps there will be a dark horse victory from Gudetama or Aggretsuko? Voting is open until May 26, 5PM (Japan Standard Time).

Lost Classics of Teen Lit: 1939-1989

This delightful blog summarizes and reviews (mostly) YA lit spanning (roughly) five decades, from the well-known to the obscure. Judy Blume is here, and so is Beverly Cleary’s Leave it to Beaver tie-in, V.C. Andrews’ “second-most infamous book”, Barthe DeClements, Paul Zindel, and Stephen King. Celebrate the holidays with the Wakefield Twins of Sweet Valley High, learn how to babysit from the Baby-Sitters Club, and browse vintage issues of Seventeen. The entire sagas of Ginny Gordon and Polly French are covered here, as is a fair chunk of Silhouette's First Love series and some Nancy Drew, sort of. What about that book that you read when you were younger which you just can’t remember the title of? Maybe Molly or her readers can help!

Take Care of Yourself

A train station in Japan's Fukuoka Prefecture posted public service messages about the country's current Covid-19-related state of emergency using a typographical style reminiscent of legendary anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Japanese social media users have noticed and have been having some fun with it.

You probably think this song is about... who?

"You're So Vain" (lyrics) was a big hit for Carly Simon, reaching Billboard's number one spot in 1973. However, who the song is about has been an enduring mystery.

Here's Another Pokemon is a weekend column on Kotaku by Zack Zwiezen which explores interesting, unusual, and startling Pokedex entries (with a fair amount of assistance from Bulbapedia). Each entry discusses a different Pokemon at length, with random facts, personal observations, and highlighted fan art and comments.

Ollie Johnston, R.I.P.

The last of Disney's Nine Old Men, Ollie Johnston, has passed away at the age of 95. His work at Disney on several classic features and his books with Frank Thomas (The Illusion of Life in particular), have long been inspiring to animators like myself. He was one of the great ones, and will be missed.

The changing-clothes figure skating of new feeling

Pinky:st is VANCE PROJECT and BABYsue's series of cute girl figurines with interchangeable parts. This series has quite a large following, both in Japan (where they originate from) and overseas. In addition to the regular line-- and various limited editions-- there's Pinky:cos (cosplay Pinkies) and P:Chara (characters from video games and anime). Of course, if the look you want (or your favorite character) is unavailable, many hobbyists mod and repaint their Pinkies. And then there's the cool photoblogs...

Polygamy in the Heart of Texas

Who is Warren Jeffs? A look inside the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints, who have built what is believed to be the first polygamist temple in Texas. Led by a doomsaying prophet, the members of the FLDS are taught that wives are expected to be completely submissive, and outside cultural influences are forbidden (links via this post on LiveJournal's exmormon community).
