Are there any MetaFilter meetups via Zoom or other such medium?
Here is the usual promo for MST Club, where we watch movies and Mystery Science Theater 3000 (although without voice or video chat, just text) every Thursday evening.

7th Annual MST Club Holiday Video Marathon Social Distancing Edition
Sigh, I looked right over that, is why. Maybe I'm just in denial.

We've started out with some non-Christmas MST3K, since several of us are on. Just starting now is ROBOT HOLOCAUST.

Thanks for putting us on the sidebar mods! We're now into the first special portion of our show.

It's been progressing well! We've got 24 hours to go, got a lot of things planned for tomorrow....

I'm glad you guys could make it! We got up to 19 people once, but the median was probably 13 or so. I'll write a more full recap later.

The high number of people there was lower than previous years, I think we topped out at 17, but once we got solidly underway I don't think we dipped below 5, even in the morning of the 25th, which is often empty. Sadly, I suffered some pretty heavy sleep debt myself on the 25th, which I had saved some of my favorite bits, the Ice Cream Bunny and the Star Wars Holiday Special, so I missed out on many of my favorite moments. But it wasn't the first time that's happened.… [more]

Turkey Day 2020
I feel bad about this coming so close on the heels of the election day show, and in a month there'll be the Christmas Marathon (I think 7th annual?). But I never post on Talk about anything else, so, consider that I just saved everything up for the holiday seasoning.

We're under way! I'm happy the stream is working in our little chat room (the one from YouTube), otherwise we would have had to have constructed a simulcast out of our own copies of episodes.

They've got these cute bumpers where everyone is on Zoom talking to each other!

The first episode is Teenagers From Outer Space. TORCHAA!
posted to MetaTalk by JHarris at 6:14 AM on November 26, 2020
Ah I misidentified, it's "Teenagers From Outer Space." They didn't title it ahead of time so I had to guess from the host segment

Movie #2 is Hobgoblins. I repeat what I said in chat about it: "GAH"

After the new Supermarket short, episode three is Pod People!

Episode four is the wild card: Carnival Magic! Good luck with THAT one.

Episode five is Final Justice, with the return of Joe Don Baker.

The six and probably last movie of the sequence is The Day The Earth Froze! If it goes like it has in previous years, they'll repeat it afterwards in case you miss one you wanted to see.

A seventh movie! Night of the Blood Beast!

Election Day video destress party!
The Halloween show went pretty well, it was mostly regulars but that fits in with the impromptu nature of the show, which I had literally decided to do the day before. I hope more people show up for "Electron Day!" My plan is to kick it off at noon, but usually not many people (if any!) show up until the evening.

Working on the material for the show now, thinking about rolling something to do with the death of Sean Connery into this.

The day has arrived, and preparations are almost complete. The playlist is actually running now. No one actually has to be in the room for it to go, but I myself plan to be around starting noon ET.

What can you expect? We have three major kinds of things today:

Riffing. This takes the form of episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and such.
Weird movies. Sci-fi strangeness of various types.
Shorts, mostly… [more]

Oh! We should probably try to sneak in Operation Double 007 in there, since it stars Sean's brother Neil Connery, playing a James Bond type!

Recap:
Top simultaneous viewer count was 15.
I got to spring Alfonso Bresca's weird but fun (although a bit problematic) Star Odyssey on people.
MST episodes were Space Mutiny, Monster A-Go Go and (late) Operation Double 007.
An infamous Sean Connery film had a prominent place.
We also watched classic Doctor Who serial The Chase, the lowest moment of the Daleks: they get scared off by a haunted house, and one even gets killed by an… [more]

Racial slurs that should never be written
On the G word, a particular cowtown puppet show that makes fun of bad movies that I make Fanfare posts about and kinda-sorta run showings of (let's be specific, it's Mystery Science Theater 3000) might, or might not, be considered a false match. In the KTMA age the female robot character was sometimes called Gypsum, but that connotation seems to have been abandoned in the cable era.

In the most recent version of MST (produced for the stage), it's worth noting that the… [more]

MST Club: Joel's chatriff thing
We should be ready to go now--
posted to MetaTalk by JHarris at 2:46 PM on May 3, 2020
Great, I thought! It wasn't a scrolling chat room at all, but instead the characters appeared in a side-window. We also found out that Gypsy has been renamed G.P.C. to avoid using what is now commonly considered a slur for her name, which I appreciate at least! Felicia Day and Jonah Ray showed up during the aftershow, along with other current cast and crew, and Jonah sung the Reptilicus song! No word yet on if or when there's more shows, live, TV'd or stream'd, coming.… [more]

Sharing copyright infringing material on metafilter?
Not to come down either in favor or opposed, it's worth nothing that, if you like those sites, it's a good reason not to link them on Metafilter, since increases in visibility will put them on copyright holders' radar. Even with YouTube, more than once for MST Club, I'd make a Fanfare post of an episode and include a found YouTube link to it, and by the time it came time to watch the episode the next day it had been taken down.

Welcome to Metafilter polytope subirb enby-of-piano-dice, and StarkRoads! Thanks for making it to the show this year everyone! I'll do a recap report tomorrow, have happy remaining holidays everyone!

Final report:
Fewer people made it to the show overall this year, but people seemed to stick around longer? Which, I dunno, some people might have been busier? Again, it's all intended to be no stress, come if you feel like it. We maxed out at 19 concurrent viewers, in the later hours of the 25th. We had fewer technical problems overall than usual, which I attribute to one of the co-hosts' server space and technical skill.

As the show has continued from year… [more]

I am not sure what you mean. We showed both, but Alf is like 45 minutes, while the Donny & Marie was actually just a bit of a longer show as was only around 13 or so minutes. The main marathon is 48 hours, which is a lot of time to fill; we just have more stuff than we can show in that window.

Maybe next year we'll do 72 official hours again, but the first day of that will be almost entirely specials and Christmas episodes. That much back-breaking joviality might be taking things too far?
posted to MetaTalk by JHarris at 8:45 AM on December 27, 2019
And we'd like to do things other than Christmas in this kind of format sometimes; it's just that Christmas is kind of a unique opportunity. Even with people who don't celebrate it, our version is irreverent enough that folks who don't particularly care for it can still laugh at it.

Awww. But yeah, it's not specially related to one show, so there's really no place for it in Fanfare. There's still the New Years' Eve show at least.

Turkey Day 2019
Aww foop, hang in there!

I will probably be ducking out during the show for a while for Black Thursday sales, which as an electronics-using person on limited income are an important source of equipment for me, but I will try to make it back as soon as I can, and there'll be plenty of other people there too to help keep things running, as far as that's necessary for a completely automated stream.

Aww! Well I'm glad you can make it while simultaneously being sad about the medical issues that make it possible. Get well soon everyone!

Hurricane Dorian Check-In Thread
I'm in Brunswick, GA, things are calm here but most businesses are closed. There's an evacuation order but I'm like a mile outside of it. At the moment it looks like we're just going to catch the edge of it, but there's still a curfew tomorrow at 8 pm.
