Part of it, in my case, is my completionist impulse working to finish the Spirit List (I have all 1,303!), part of it is me logging into the game a couple times a day to start new expeditions.

MST Club Christmas Video Marathon 2018!
foop, judging by the reactions to the SWHS thread a month or so back, once is enough, twice might kill some poor soul.

Sure, just go here: https://cytu.be/r/Metafilter_MST3KClub sometime from the 23rd to 25th US Eastern Time. That's five or six hours behind yours I think, so for you the marathon actually starts at a more reasonable hour, around 5 or 6 in the morning. (I'll be up at midnight starting this thing!)

The site that provides for all this is cytu.be, which is reasonably tested and open-source. The player is HTML, so it seems no Flash is necessary, although there might be… [more]

Absolutely sammyo! In fact, during is fine too. "Christmas" here is not meant to be exclusionary, but just a general term for the season. "Holidays" might be a more appropriate name, but I figured the usual insanity we show should indicate what we're about.

There's a whole day to go, including the traditional showing of the Star Wars Holiday Special on the last evening! Good luck with that, by the way.

It's 4 AM December 26 and we're still watching some minor stuff. Thanks for making our 5th annual show a success! We had a solid average of 13 people in the room, which at times got up to 17, and one time I think up to 21.

We're thinking about maybe doing two of these a year, but I'm not sure when the other one would be, or even if we should do two. It wouldn't be for some time, definitely, but it would give us a chance to do one that focused on something other than holiday material.

We had so much fun at the marathon this year that Snake's working on a smaller, unofficial kind of thing (not that the Christmas thing is "official"), in the same room, for New Year's Eve. And since midnight is kind of a rolling thing as the night continues, we can expect to celebrate the new year once an hour for quite a while!

MST3K Turkey Day 2018
Is that so, paper_chromatographologist? That would be good because it'd take the edge off of having to watch the whole thing, and we could possibly do our own S12 marathon on actual Thanksgiving, via rabb.it.
posted to MetaTalk by JHarris at 7:49 AM on November 15, 2018
I've got the twitch channel up in the room already! In fact, currently YouTube videos in CyTube seem to be broken, so it's this or nothing.

I just had a realization. Consider:
Official Turkey Day 2018 this year is, again, a string of classic episodes.
Unofficial Turkey Day 2018 this year, on Thanksgiving, is also a string of classic episodes.
ShoutFactory's official Twitch stream is showing Official Turkey Day, but also is showing classic MST episode all month long.
As verified by me an hour ago, we can host SF's Twitch stream in the MST Club cytube room.… [more]

Shout Factory is showing MST stuff all month long, but the official marathon, with has Joel and Jonah hosting and Season 12 previews, starts at noon Eastern.

This is the decision so far, it's provisional at the moment for we have a couple of viability checks to do, but this is our plan:

Netflix premieres Season 12, "The Gauntlet," six episodes, on Thansgiving Day, this coming Thursday. We will use this as the basis of our own Turkey Day in our rabb.it room, at https://www.rabb.it/rodneylives, starting at Noon, Eastern.

For review: the episode are (order provisional but probably right)… [more]

Turkey Day 2018 Conclusion:

Other than an early (pre-movie) visit by a jerk with a Pepe avatar who was quickly nullified by turning of audio and video chat, it went well. We had to leave the room "Open," since the alternatives required rabb.it membership or invite links to enter. This meant that rabb.it actually put our show on their open rooms page, and we did get a few outside visitors, but other than that HateFrog at the start they were well-behaved, and a… [more]

Fanfare Errors / IMDB API Removed
Since we're talking about Fanfare bugs, could I mention an inconsistency I discovered a few days ago? In brief: the order of the episodes, going by the Previous/Next links, sometimes behaves as if the list is ordered by episode order, and sometimes as if it goes by posting order.

Go to the Fanfare page for the first Steven Universe episode. Notice at the bottom it has a link to the next episode, but not the previous episode.

The problem is,… [more]

Aaaah that explains things cortex. Because I can personally vouch, the Steven Universe threads are very inconsistently tagged, because me. Steven Universe is a show with lots of spoilers, that are constandly revealing previous episodes in new light, so much so that it's hard to be consistent about them. MST Club Video Marathon 2017: Christmas In SPAAAACE
Heh, it's no big secret! I write sometimes about roguelike games. The object you're trying to obtain to escape with, in Rogue, Hack and Nethack, to win is called the Amulet of Yendor. "Rodney" is "Yendor" spelled backwards, a little joke by the originators of Rogue; Glenn Wichmann thought it was a funny name. Also, Rodney is the default player name in Rogue.

So, I view "Rodney Lives" as kind of a declaration about not… [more]

Thanks again for making it to the show, everyone! Although we had much less thread commentary this year, it still ended up being about the same in terns of attendance, actually slightly better, with 17 being the high-water mark regarding concurrency, but with 13+ being most common at popular times. As usual, once it started, there tended to be a couple of lurkers in at all times,, who I presume used the marathon as background, which of course is fine by us.

I hope we get news of Season 12 this time out! There was a list of the most critically-acclaimed Netflix original shows a few days ago. The most critically-acclaimed show of them all was the new season of MST3K, with a critical approval rate of 100%.

Just reminding everyone we, of course, do "no guilt" marathons. No need to excuse yourself for showing up late or dropping out early, 'cause half of us will be doing the same. For example, around 2 I'll probably have to leave for a while for family dinner, which I have to drive down the road for.

BTW, I'll put some things in before the time for the official Turkey Day thing if you want to show up between now and the main event.
posted to MetaTalk by JHarris at 4:53 AM on November 23, 2017
Thanks for making it out everyone! We topped out at 23 simultaneous viewers I think. But even towards the end we were at a consistent 14 minimum.

Next up on MST Club's itenerary is 904 WEREWOLF, with the classic episode 308 TIME OF THE APES, coming this Thursday starting at 7 PM Eastern/4 PM Pacific.

We also, of course, have our upcoming fourth-annual Christmas marathon, which has MST and Christmas specials mixed in.

This also made me nostalgic for the MeFi Call of Cthulhu adventure we had a few years ago. Sigh.

cytube tries to use an HTML5 player for as much media as possible these days. I'm at a loss for how to solve that issue. valkane also reported that some videos played with weird audio (those that, before I encoded them into mp4s, were once flvs), but that doesn't seem to be consistent between people.

I'm not sure what I can offer regarding these problems. cytu.be isn't perfect, but it is better than our old solution, at least, in terms of reliability.
posted to MetaTalk by JHarris at 7:20 AM on December 26, 2016
I couldn't say, but it's not hugely bad. It's mostly just another weird 80s action-fantasy, but it also has little to do with the games other than some namechecks.

Notes from the whole affair:

Highest concurrent population was 15 viewers. Highs tended to happen around 6-10 PM, lows seemed to be in the early mornings.
The Christmas specials seemed to be slightly less popular than the riffing this year.… [more]
