NaNoWriMo Doom Clock
Needs more ominous ticking.
posted to MetaFilter Projects by JHarris at 5:39 PM on October 27, 2013
I am just about tempted to try NaNoWriMo again this year. I did it once a good number of years ago, but this time, I don't know, I feel my "random musing" mode, which some might term "bullshitting," feels stronger, like I could just flow a lot better. It might end up looking more like a collection of essays though.

The Lost Crypts
I keep getting terribly annoying security error dialogs in Firefox. Was fun what little I was able to play before getting too annoyed to continue.

Here's the text:
An uncaught error occurred, likely caused by a bug in the client. Try reloading the game. If you received a more detailed error message, please report it to the developer. [SecurityErrorEvent type="securityError" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2 text="Error #2048"]

I just had an extremely frustrating game with terrible lag. I would hold a key, release it, and keep walking for several seconds. My character would dance drunkenly and consistently by escape passages while making that obnoxious HURT noise. Very difficult to enjoy at the moment, maybe when lag is better.

Okay, further attempts at playing --

I tried it in Chrome, which ended the problem with the error messages. I still got into situations where it seemed like the character wasn't responding to my controls. These always seemed to happen in high-tension times too, like when getting hit repeatedly by fireballs, which leads me to guess it might be a focus problem? Lending weight to this is how my game came to an end, which was when moving the cursor up accidently outside… [more]

Really, NOTHING is sadder?
I like these!

So, are you saying that the saddest thing possible is people saying something is the saddest thing possible? HMMMMMM?!?!

Python for poets.
Python, I think, is an excellent starter language. Good luck!

And report back how it goes? I'm interested in how you're going to teach it. I have my own ideas about teaching Python, and things in general, and would like to hear how someone does it professionally.

I'm the same way Shepherd, except I eventually got a reference book. There are still holes in my knowledge (decorators, *args and *kwargs, list comprehensions, anything involving lambda) but I'm getting there.

Panther Scouts: A comic about cats who go to school and do scouting
That was charming! And Dirtmo is a great name.

DANGER RADIOACTIVE
The list "only" has 200 items in it, because that's YouTube's limit! I'm still working on getting some of the deadweight out of this one, and I've also stared a second list, DANGER RADIOACTIVE 2, for the overflow.
posted to MetaFilter Projects by JHarris at 7:03 PM on August 22, 2013
Here is Danger Radioactive 2, which is up to around 50-60 right now, it hasn't been culled so much though.

I continue to cull the lists. Anyone who has something to add is welcome to MeMail me.

List 2 is up to 100 videos!
posted to MetaFilter Projects by JHarris at 8:52 PM on August 24, 2013
Yeah, I'm still weeding out the long ones. I had the infamous "I am a cat" video in there, but then when I actually tried to watch it, it was megalong, I had to remove it. I'm still trying to get the right tone and style down, it's an evolving process.

Also, some of it is weird sketch comedy, I'm unsure if those fit in with the REALLY random stuff yet.
posted to MetaFilter Projects by JHarris at 2:13 PM on August 26, 2013
I just removed a few that got through. Everything on the first list should be less than seven minutes now, or really weird to make up for it.

Vpered - Abstract Strategy Board Game
It is a valid entry, definitely.

It is difficult to speak insightfully about the game though without playing it. I might try it out with some friends tomorrow. If we do I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah, I am sorry about the Wine thing. It is a problem with Game Maker in general it seems. YoYo Games appears to be working on a PSP runtime, of all things, but there is no word on a Linux version.

You can thank sfxr for that. It may not be the perfect tool for game sound creation (it could use some more options) but is pretty darn useful all the same.

Born for Love: Book/Blog on Empathy
Despite not really knowing a lot about the book, I voted for it because it jives with some personal observations from the past few years, about how really empathy seems to be on the outs. With the 4chan culture on one side and the Republican Party on the other, it seems like viewing things from the other guys' perspective is now perceived as something only losers do, and I hate that. (Although to be strictly honest, 4chan can be surprisingly empathetic some times, when news of some injustice… [more]

@Play Collected
magnificent frigatebird, I don't know about that. Game Mag Weaseling is pretty great, and GameSetLinks is nice for keeping informed on gaming stuff without spending hours pouring through the likes of Joystiq, Kotaku and Destructoid. And they had a great interview a few days back with Vic Davis, creator of Solium Infernum, who seems to be getting up there with Tarn Adams in cult designer popularity.

(Not that I don't appreciate the compliment!)

Peanuts Roasted
Yeah, but on the other hand I have almost three months of strips backlogged at this point, enough to get me almost through the first year of the newspaper run. I did all that in two very intensive days. If you enjoy doing something it goes by in a flash, and I really like Peanuts. Back in first grade I checked out every Peanuts compilation the school library had multiple times.

But in any case, it's likely that the strip percentage will fall down a bit when it gets… [more]

I use comics.com's Embed code. I reason they wouldn't have provided it if they didn't want people embedding strips in their pages. The code even links to the comics.com page, meaning I don't have to provide separate links, a useful bonus.

The First Annual MetaFilter Interactive Fiction Contest
Inform's documentation was frustrating?

Anyway, I registered but didn't get around to doing any work on my idea, which involved the player being trapped in a cave, having to engineer increasingly complex Rube Goldberg-style accidents to happen to himself, which would be shown to a subverbal monster sitting on a jeweled throne for his amusement. The monster's standards would increase throughout the game, and if the player failed to cause him sufficient mirth he'd get up… [more]
