Quest for pumpkin
Trying to find a supermarket in the Manhattan area that you know carries frozen (or canned, I guess) diced pumpkin with NO additives (i.e., ingredients list just reads "pumpkin").
Sweater search
Maybe it's just the Succession revisiting, but I bought one of these half-zip merino sweaters last year and I wish I'd bought a couple more.
Thank you...I hope
Is there a word or phrase that would be understand as "thank you" across all of the major Chinese language communities? (Bonus for link to pronunciation so I can get the tones right.)
So, Canadian pharmacy, we meet at last?
Short form: For years I've used a prescription drug (not a controlled substance) which was recently discontinued by its manufacturer. There is no substitute. Local compounding pharmacies tell me they can't get the active ingredient to make up the medication for me. But I really don't want to stop using it. There is no generic available in the U.S.; however, there are foreign generics. How do I do this?
LET'S DECIMATE THIS MOTHER!!!!
I saw a charming little film last night called Polite Society (by Nida Manzoor of We Are Lady Parts). Here is the trailer; you should see it. One of the film's most visually enjoyable sequences is an extended fight scene between various women at an Indian wedding in London where the attendees are mostly in traditional dress.
Another long-shot remember-me-this
I'm trying to remember a scene in a show or movie (or maaaaaybe a book), but my memories are so vague that I will be genuinely impressed if someone can pinpoint it for me. Are you up for the challenge, AskMe???
Quest for folio
Now that I'm going into the office more often, I find myself carrying my paper planners to and from work. It's easy to forget or get lazy about it, so I thought I'd look for a folio-type container that I could just put in my backpack at the end of the day that could hold them both, plus ideally have space for a few more documents or pens or the like.
Help me like tofu better
I would like to eat more of it, especially in recipes that don't require too much time/prep and don't rely heavily on carbs. But I've never really been a fan. I'm okay with it in, e.g., a spicy Korean stew, but otherwise my consumption is close to zero. Out of the soup or dessert context, I find soft versions unappealing texturally. And even in soup I need some contrast with it; I enjoy the taste of miso soup but will often avoid the sad lump or two of tofu in it.
he's a travelin' dog, he's made a lot of poops
Looking for recommendations for a wheeled dog carrier suitable for a 10-15 lb. dog that you know to be airline-compliant. I'm good with the googling part, I'm really just looking for people's personal experiences, especially with fitting under seats (I know that space can vary, assume regular national airline seats, so 18x11x11). Thanks!
why, yes it is
There's a line from the (American) movie Gilda (1946) I've never understood. Our Antihero has just cleaned up cheating at a fancy illegal casino in South America. On his way out, he's accosted by two toughs who say, "The boss wants a word with you." He responds, "Is Brooklyn across the river here, too?"
Need a dupe for Kiehl's Silk Groom serum!
What the title says. I don't fuss much with my hair, but I often use this serum either on damp hair before brushing it out or to tame frizzy flyaways when it's dry without going too heavy on the product. It is discontinued, I don't like the SG cream, I am bereft. Suggestions?
Examples of a trope: posthumous vindication
Today, in connection with Control in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, the thought popped into my head: "Oh, I like the kind of story where someone is disgraced or their theories refuted and they die in tragic obscurity or ignominy, but then it turns out later that they were right and their actions or research end up having helped save the world."
Goblins redux
Another Ask today produced one of those classic "I read this as a child and it traumatized me and now I'm remembering it dimly and feeling shaken" moments. It was a body-horror short story (I think?) about a man who went underground amongst goblins and slowly turned into one himself...
You keep me hangin' on
I have a narrow file cabinet in my desk, and I somehow lost track of the metal bar that would let me hang folders left to right. Manufacturer no longer makes that piece. Googling to find a replacement makes me wonder if I'm not understanding something...
VOTE SAXON
In the past week I've spotted some extremely obnoxious pandemic disinformation stickers in my neighborhood. What can I carry with me, besides a big old Sharpie, that would allow me to deface these when I spot them as quickly and effectively as possible, without harming the underlying surface (which is usually city property--I'm not looking to get picked up for vandalism)?
Janky A/V setups
I'm trying to route around my ancient receiver's lack of HDCP 2.2, but ARC doesn't seem to be working...
Get the OLED out
Recently bought a new LG CX OLED TV (48") to replace my 10-year-old LCD model. It's lovely, but...
Most minimalist paint job
A Command strip failed me for once, not only coming off the wall with very little weight on it, but also taking off a bit of the paint (standard apartment white). It's right where I'll see it every day walking in the door, so I want to fix it.
Monitor madness
New job, new work-issued laptop, new external display problems...
Biofinity toric multifocal for the high myope
Aging eyes have meant the end of contact use for me, because my combination of serious astigmatism and severe myopia (-6.5/-9.5) has meant that there were no mass-market multifocal lenses for me. I understand that CooperVision has recently released a toric multifocal in a range that seems to include my prescription. Has anyone with a similarly wonky pair of eyes tried these? Are they comfortable? (In early days I used monthlies and wasn't thrilled with their comfort over time.) Easy to get used to?
What's the right second monitor for me?
Working from home on an entry-level 16-inch 2019 MBP running Catalina.
Command-strip conundrum
I had a Command hook on the inside of my coat closet door, for hanging very light reusable bags. I say had, because someone who will remain nameless thought they'd hang up their heavy winter coat on it rather than on a hanger and snapped the hook part right off. But when I went to remove the remaining base with the usual pull-the-strip-one-way-and-the-thing-the-other technique, the pull tab came free, leaving the remainder of the adhesive strip securely buried under the hook base.
Mysterious joke reference
I'm reading a mystery novel set at a law firm in post-WWII London (and written around that time). One of the secretaries at the firm is extremely literal-minded. A partner, chaffing her for it, says, "Would you search yourself anxiously for traces of strawberry jam if someone accused you of being a--" She cuts him off, "Really, Mr. Cove!"
Tunes in the tub
I have a standard, basic (old-fashioned?) A/V output (AppleTV, Bluray player, old region-free DVD player)->receiver (Yamaha RX-V677)->speakers setup in my living room. I'd like to be able to also (and simultaneously) send the audio into the bathroom, but it's not feasible to run wires for a speaker there--it would have to be some kind of wireless speaker. Is this even possible, given my receiver? If so, what's the best option?
Replacing a Macbook Pro keyboard in NYC, y/n?
I have a mid-2014 MacBook Pro. I like my mid-2014 MBP. It can basically handle all the tasks I ask it to, though there is an occasional glitch and it can certainly run hot. In the happy universe, I'd be waiting another year or two to replace it. However...one of my Command keys and my 'i' key have stopped working, and it's a huge pain--I've remapped a couple keys to keep it usable in the short term, but that's not a long-term solution.
A cloud of unknowing
Once upon a time, I read a book in which the protagonist is described as traveling (by land or sea, I'm not sure, but not flying) and passing into some kind of great dazzling, blinding whiteness.
Windows, why?
Why is it in that in this the year of our Lord 2019 in Windows I cannot move or rename a file or folder while it is open in an app? I've been able to do this in the Mac OSes for so long I honestly don't remember a time when I couldn't, so clearly this is a task that an OS can routinely be capable of. For Windows not to be able to do this must represent some kind of choice, or some kind of negligence. (E.g., a literal answer like "the system might thereby have conflicting information about where the file/folder is stored" is not what I'm looking for, because this is not 1988 and I know this problem is solvable.) It is so inconvenient not to be able to do this. Perhaps an explanation will help me reconcile myself to it.
(Background knowledge level: modest to moderate.)
"Never...until now!"
I was rewatching Bob le Flambeur (1956) this weekend (thanks, Kanopy!) and noticed an exchange early on, re the prestigious casino Bob is planning to rob, to the effect of: "But no one has ever even thought about [hitting this particular target]!" "Well, now someone has thought about it."
"I'll carry your books, I'll carry a torch, I'll carry a tune..."
When I took a Japanese history course these many ages ago, one of the things I learned is that Japanese pronunciation is blessedly simple compared to English. So...what's up with "karaoke?" Shouldn't it be "kah-rah-oh-kay?" How did it become "carry-oh-key," which doesn't even seem like the first choice for English speakers trying to decipher the word? What's the linguistic/phonetic basis here? I can't think of any similar loan words from Japanese.
Word vs. outlines
I'm having some difficulty generating a table of contents in Word 2016 for the PC...
Cleaning service in NYC
I'm moving and need someone to do a move-out cleaning next weekend. I could of course use Handy, but I'd really rather give my money to an actual small business or self-employed person than hand over a big cut to "disruptors." (I haven't used professional cleaners in a few years, and my old cleaning person is out of the game.) Does anyone have personal experience with someone RELIABLE who might be available in Manhattan on such short notice? Thanks.
NYC escape rooms
So, recently, to humor a friend, I did an escape room with her, and, well, genuinely enjoyed it! (Shows me, I guess.) But it was in another city, and she'd like to do another one on her next visit here, so...

Best ultra-light weight budget/expense-tracking app for iOS
Sadly, with the most recent iOS update, I can no longer use the minimalist expense-tracking app I used to use. It was just called Budget. It was based on the envelopes system, and was little more than a series of line items showing your spending against a fixed allocation over a recurring period (weekly, monthly, whatever), with optional rollover. Transaction entry was similarly simple, just a little pop-up screen for the amount and date and payee. I used it for casual expense-tracking only, not anything more complicated. I handle my macro budget issues separately.
Oldest dog portrait?
I recently saw Gerrit Dou's Dog at Rest at the MFA, to which it's been pledged. (It was charming watching people's faces light up as they noticed the piece walking through the room.) It struck me that it was the oldest (1650) "portrait" of a dog I was aware of.
Gift basket by Friday?
Our long-time receptionist is leaving us this Friday. We're having an office party, but I thought it might also be nice to have something on her desk that day, so I'm investigating availabilities and costs to see whether it seems worthwhile on a somewhat limited budget. She's well-known for maintaining the office supply of random treats, which naturally suggests some kind of treat basket for her...
ISO NYC seamstress for simpler project
I picked up some nice Liberty cotton lawn in London over Christmas. Now that summer's coming, I'd like to have it made up. I know that making a length of fabric into a basic rectangular scarf is a relatively simple project, but I knit rather than sew for VERY GOOD REASONS. Where to find someone who will do it for me?
