Movie: Solo: A Star Wars Story
That was some good nerd shit.

Would possibly be better if it was the origin of, like, one or two things instead of fifteen.

Though, oddly, I actually enjoyed the mega, mega fanwank callbacks to Clone Wars and I guess prequel shit.

Star Wars droids will never be the same after 'Solo'

Made it in 5 minutes in and gave up. Relentless YouTube snark is exhausting and sheds little to no light on anything.

Han as a character who falls for the same shit over and over pretty much works given what we've been given. His hard bitten exterior is a bit of a shell covering the truth that he is a total sucker.

Leia felt it though.

(Also they blew up the planet the hole was on, but the Leia feeling it bit is the bit that seals the deal in Star Wars land. No robot legs for Han.)

Also turning up in years late sequels looking kind of grumpy about it and everyones happy to see him ever if it's some Von Daniken bullshit or he can't even be bothered to put on a costume and it's got Jared Leto in it.

Von Daniken bullshit with Shia fucking LaBeouf even... my god, he's worked with both of the assholes-who-are-kind-of-like-that.

Maybe he'll show up in Boba Fett and they can finally have their showdown over who is the most cool in concept but actually kind of sucky in terms of appearances on screen Mace killing his dad.

Way too many bits when Lando and L3 aren’t in it.

I sort of assumed he sprang 3 years getting kicked out of the academy, got busted down to whatever regular forces the Mud Troopers are (seems to be SW equivalent of Imperial Guard) and when we see him on Mud Planet that’s his first real deployment because otherwise he’d be dead already.

Also I have the artbook now and it is some good stuff. As ever there's a whole bunch of designs I like even better than the used one.

The Cape Room was in the escape boos and was eaten by a spacetopus.

Bit of an attempted Dread Pirate Roberts thing there that they don’t quite sell.

Technically the droids are Japanese peasants, cf Hidden Fortress.

TBH I suspect R2 talks like L3-37 all the damn time it’s just in beeps and we don’t hear it.

Solely because of the cartoons.

Movie: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
There's actually a few bits about this movie that strike me as clumsily done - mainly to do with setting up the rebels as getting stuck in a big spaceship being chased in an empty sector of the galaxy but then undermining that by having people constantly nipping onto and off of it seemingly at will, and which I think could all be avoided with a tighter script pass - but I'm glad to report that none of that really matches up with the bits that annoy the nazis, some of which were TBH my favorite… [more]

Also everyone’s physics gripes about the chase would totally be fixed if the two ships were under constant acceleration.

Westworld: Journey into Night
I love murderbot show.

“I wrote that line for you...!”

What that creepy William moment on the 'Westworld' premiere means for the future of season 2

More wanky bollocks in a JJ Abrams mystery box plotline getting in the way of robot! rebellion! action!, no doubt.

Westworld: The Bicameral Mind
That was fantastic.

And the hot takes on why it wasn't actually enjoyable aren't worth shit.

The ethics of ‘Westworld’: Those who fail to heed stories are doomed to recreate them

My hot take counter to all the other hot takes: The big twists the Internet jumped up and down about having guessed were actually not the most interesting part of the story.

I, too, suspect we will see some Futureworld Shit going down.

You can leave just meat out in the sun all day, patch it up, pump in "blood" and have a working host, which suggests it's a little more durable than regular meat.

Maeve found a bit of bullet inside her so they don't just mulch the bodies. It does seem like it would be the most logical and hygienic approach though.

Having watched 2.1 I think I need that. It’s that or go back and watch all of 1. Which is tempting, but I don’t really have the time.

Movie: A Quiet Place
I like how the basement whiteboard and newspaper clippings etc... are basically FPS enviromental lore dumps.

Particularly liked "WEAKNESS: ?????"

Turns out the answer was shotguns.

Not if you can’t rack them dramatically for the final shot.

(Which is something I liked immensely, but boy is this movie a weird mix off trying-to-be-artsy and total brainless cheese)

It’ll be all about desperate searches for generator fuel to keep the CPAP machines going for snorers.

We took our 5 year old and she was mostly okay with it, thougghvshe git scared and almost walked at some of the trailers. Probably wouldn't take a younger kid.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Bombad Jedi
A tough sell. Toughest sell of all, really, in Star Wars terms. It ends up... not entirely horrible? It does not cause the entire animated franchise to burst into flames, at least.

Movie: Ghostbusters
On balance I think using it as they did worked out pretty well, but I've heard hints that it being filmed in the first place was at studio insistence and kind of contentious.

Just at a glance it seems to have done equivalently well to the other summer films in a year where no one summer film has really been the big one.
