Movie: Sorry to Bother You
Worry Free is both a metaphor and a horrifyingly believable thing. They could start up tomorrow and nobody would blink an eyelid.

(No it’s not UBI, it’s the libertarian-acceptable version of slavery, which is not far off the pseudo-sharecroping shit people get forced into when real jobs go away, but if Musk or whoever figure out how to go one step further with that they totally will.)

For a movie set in an "alternative realioty" it's a hell of a lot more grounded in reality than, say, your average rom-com or coming of age movie, which paint a picture of society that's now idealized to the point of being unrecognizable.

Really it only deviates on:

a) Indentured servitude, which Amazon would never go for because of the implication of responsibility.
b) horseman drugs

Thoroughly recommend checking out I’m A Virgo as a follow up.

Movie: Solo: A Star Wars Story
Put me down as loving all the Clone Wars/Rebels shoutouts in the movie though could have done with less pointless lightsaber ignitions and more dancing around on robo-chicken legs in it. Fuck it, throw in Savage Opress.

Would also accept Darth Maul looking directly at the audience and saying “Ashoka Tano is real”.

Almost as if there's something else going on...

R2 remains the only Star Wars character to have had on-screen sex.

Solo would be a really kickass couple of episodes of some Rebels type series and so earned my heart that way.

The cut scenes of Han Solo's Imperial Navy career.

I absolutely think this is a bit of connective tissue that should have been there, and I like it as a scene, but I can totally see why they dropped it - pace reasons, bit too similar to what was before and after. I almost think they should have blitzed through all the set up scenes in a series of very fast Edgar Wright style cuts.

(It really is a great song in an underrated movie)

Honestly I feel like it’s natural home would be some arc on some animated show where it could be both!?

But still? Enjoyed what we got.

Everyone who has seen Spider-Verse has got to be wondering what could have been had Disney not lost its nerve.

The Haunting of Hill House: Season 1
Well that was a hell of a big build up to fuck all that was vastly less smart than it believed itself to be. Also my god were all the monologues increasingly dumb and overwrought right up to the awful all-monologue last episode.

Should have trusted my instincts and bailed.

Also the bits where they quote Shirley Jackson are a crime.

Suspect they were way better at adding cool new stuff than actually resolving anything, so it gets Lost syndrome.

The thing with a room needed more indication that it was actually a thing to work as well.

Movie: Bohemian Rhapsody
I loved the Live Aid sequence so much I was wishing the movie had been brave enough to do the set in its entirety though I do understand why they'd cut it down a bit.

They did a fair bit...

Really weird thing to watch from 2018 and realize that something like that couldn't happen today.

It's an odd film. I really liked the start (even with it's goofy just-so stories for how various songs happened)… [more]

Doctor Who: Rosa
t doesn't kill you, it just sends you there (so you're out of his way but technically unharmed (until you get eaten by a dinosaur or whatever)).

They did send a guy whose plan was to Sound of Thunder the civil rights movement out of existence back to dinosaur times.

Literally within seconds of seeing him my kid was all “that’s a neonazi from the future” and I’m simultaneously proud and a bit worried that she’s able to ID him as such so quickly. What a world.

They could have given him the full fashy haircut but that would be lampshading a bit.

the actor looked too much like a charming rogue than a villain

Meet the dapper white supremacist from the future who’s trying to change the past.

Movie: First Man
I didn’t care for it’s weird relentless miserabilism. When they got to the point of reading out the contingency speech for astronauts dying on the moon I may have actually started laughing at it.

(Oh, And you totally see the flag they’re up in arms about, so that bullshit is totally some Red Cups nonsense)
posted to FanFare by Artw at 2:35 PM on October 21, 2018
Ehhhh... it’s still basically in the realm of making shit up and so jokey it was the other thing I had to suppress a laugh at. As an emotional payoff it’s kind of awful.

A thing I really wasn’t sure of at the time and in retrospect really like: the de-emphasizing of external shots in favor of close ups of faces and first person views out of tiny windows. That’s a place where the stylistic choice not to go the obvious heroic route really works.

Movie: BlackKKKlansman
Gonna take a guess without looking that the racist cop facing consequences was the fabrication.

Joke is on me, that specific person and the person he assaulted did not exist.

Fantastic movie, got a very boisterous crowd reaction throughout, which made the dead silence at the end even stronger.

I must admit, I might not have been quite ready for that last bit.

That final scene with the knock and the corridor, after things had been going a bit too well for a while...

The dumb nonsense about Deckard being a replicant is their very favorite part of any movie ever and they desperately want to see it applied everywhere.

Tarantino’s all about lifting from blaxploitation so the similarity makes so sense there.

Movie: Hereditary
Wow. That movie sure stressed me the fuck out.

It’s very good, but fuck.

To me I think the biggest failure of this film is the absence of epipens.

Parenting a kid that needs an epicenter is a constant panic of realizing you haven’t brought the thing to some place that has food, I thought that checkovs gun was handled very well.
posted to FanFare by Artw at 10:32 PM on June 22, 2018
I liked the weird as hell end but yeah, feels like they could have maintained tone better. That said I’m not sure I could deal with the last have of the movie being as tense as the first.
posted to FanFare by Artw at 1:15 PM on June 29, 2018
Well, we bought another backup epipen, so that bit stuck.
posted to FanFare by Artw at 7:24 AM on June 30, 2018
Heh. The stressy deadline stuff is actually another good level of tension raising.

Film Crit Hulk writing in all caps but not hulk-speak pretty should be an inoculation against taking anything they say that seriously IMHO.

I mean, he doesn't write in all caps anymore if that helps.

Nit unless it’s about puny Banner, who he hates, and Banners insistence on bringing up real world physics when smashing things is more important...
