MeFiSwap 2011-2!
I'm leaning towards sending my Awesome Religious Music As Chosen By A Godless Heathen mix.

If I want to put my mixes up online for people to download, what is the easiest way to do that? I mean, easy both for me and for them...

I don't have a printer right now, so I hit on the idea of doing collages for cover art. I have now spent a ton of time working on said collages and I don't even have my mix finished yet.

Of course, the only real way to protect yourself is to just read all the books immediately
I think it's really more a matter of this: people coming into a TV thread and talking about the books hurts the feelings of people who haven't read them, and there's no actual REASON to do it.

When I was reading the first book, someone came up to me and told me Ned dies. It fucking sucked. Yeah the books had been out for fifteen years at that point, but it sucked anyway. My intention in making this request was to attempt to shield TV-watchers from similar suckery.

The show is based on a series of books, of course people are going to be discussing them. It's perfectly natural that people want to do this. The claim that there is no reason to do is odd, imo. People talk, conversation drifts, it happens.

If a person wants to talk about something, but not discuss certain aspects of that conversation, it's better that they remove themselves from the conversation.

So, for a person who has… [more]

Exorcising the ghosts of a deletion?
I think everyone here knows what trolls are, right? You know their motivation, which is "to make people get all lathered up by saying stupid shit." Most of the time they don't even really believe what they're saying, and if they do, you're not gonna convince them. That guy showed up purely to drop a bomb in the middle of that thread, and the thing that drives me insane is the sheer number of people who responsed to him anyway. He started the derail of that thread,… [more]

Where can I offer to take free OKCupid portrait photos for MeFites?
If this was actually a thing, I'd go. (I tend to unconsciously make really stupid faces in photos, so I have tons of terrible photos of myself and very few good ones.)

Dump "awesome"
I was born and raised in North Carolina, and you better believe I say y'all. As a white American of indistinct ancestry with a pair of fairly rootless parents, I, in an effort to Have Roots, cling to whatever small traces of Southern identity I feel I can legitimately claim. Hey, it's better than digging back 200 years and then saying "Oh I'm Czech." No, I'm not Czech, I'm a North Carolinian and I'll say y'all all I want, damn it.

MeFiSwap 2011-1 commences.
I'm in but I don't exactly have an address at the moment (oh the joys of graduating and entering The Real World), so I'll email later.

I sent mine out a couple days ago (a bit late, sorry!) I've gotten one so far, from rhapsodie. Listened to half so far, it's great!

52 year old with an 18 y/o Yale beauty queen... right
Eh. I once knew a man who was absolute SLIME, and he somehow roped a very hot young girl into dating him. He was like 40+, she was 20 or younger. She was just super ignorant, and he was the first guy to pay any attention to her.

Mid-year 2010 CD mix swap
I think I just finished mine already... now, to decide if I should make two different mixes for my two swapsets, or just spend a bunch of time on making album art...

Also, add gin. But not on a Thursday morning.
Oh, I meant to add- obviously this is a lot of work to do every time you make lemonade, which is why I bought a whole bag of lemons, zested them all, made three cups of syrup with the zest, and am keeping the bag of naked lemons in the fridge to be juiced whenever I need.
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 9:00 AM on June 24, 2010
I'm not clear on how much syrup, juice and water to combine to make lemonade, though.

I've been doing: juice of half a lemon, one to two tablespoons of syrup depending on how sweet you like it, fill tall glass to halfway full with water, fill with ice. But it's obviously fuzzy.

Group joined! I actually just joined Couchsurfing a few days ago- my house has a profile but I just made my own personal one.

November is National Let's Try Obscuring Favorite Counts Month
I turned it off. I really thought about participating in the experiment despite my reservations, but it seriously took about five minutes for me to give up and check the box. Which is probably why you didn't want to include that option at first. Sorry.

I should say that when I noticed the change, I assumed that the site was broken. And then I immediately came to MeTa to see if anyone else had noticed it yet, and to report it if not. Because that's how much it bothered me.

I'm just saying I find it odd that many people seem to choose which comments to read based only on the number of favourites attached.

That really isn't what's happening. IF someone is already skimming a thread, then sure, maybe they look more closely at highly-favorited posts. But I HIGHLY doubt that anyone is actively choosing not to read any unfavorited posts. (In fact I love finding a comment with no favorites that I think is good. Because then I favorite it.)

Well, I actually DID bump into Marcia Clark in a video store once...
I know a guy who used to look EXACTLY like Al Frankin.

A few years ago, he was sitting in an airport and a couple came up to him and said, "Hey! Al Frankin!"

"I'm not Al Frankin."

"Oh, you don't have to pretend with us. We KNOW who you are! We are such big fans!"

"I swear, I'm not Al Frankin."

"Oh, we won't tell anyone you're… [more]

People need to chill out on this AskMe Poster
Well, they don't even live together, so they probably aren't married.

Honestly, the people who are angry at the OP seem to really be angry at someone else. Can s/he really help it if s/he doesn't want to spend the rest of her life with this person? Should s/he just 'get over' this incompatibility issue?
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 12:38 PM on February 27, 2009
Well, they don't even live together.

Cites? (Not that it matters, really. I just thought it was interesting.)

The OP wrote: "We live in the same building but hang out every day and spend every night together." That certainly seems to imply that they have two separate apartments.
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 10:11 AM on February 28, 2009
Why would the OP say 'but,' though, if they did live together? "Oh, my husband and I live together, but we hang out every day!" It doesn't make sense.

Prison Rape
I live about 1500 miles from Mexico and 700 miles from Canada. I have never left the US, but it's not because I didn't want to. It's because, for even the lower middle class, it is financially incredibly difficult to do it. For example, it would cost about 15% of my entire family's income for us just to travel to Poland, where you are, pracowity.
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 1:07 PM on February 11, 2009
The point is not how easy it is to travel, but that in traveling one encounters customs, ideologies, religions, languages, politics, and expectations that are radically different than those back home. And that in experiencing these differences, one can gain insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the way things are done back home.

Obviously, but that's not the point. The point is, Americans don't lack these things because they don't want them.… [more]

This is just my high school of course...

There were some trips like that at my school, but not all were paid for by fundraising. I know that the madrigal choir did fundraisers and traveled all over the place, including various parts of Europe.

The language classes sometimes had trips, but generally the students paid for them out of pocket, although they were likely to be cheaper than going by oneself. I had the chance to go to Rome with a group… [more]

Privacy concerns for social networks*fnord* ?
Some of us don't use it (or twitter) because we're not narcissists. Has nothing to do w/privacy.

And some of us use it because we want to keep in touch with our high school friends... because no one we know is in the phone book (since they only use cell phones)... because it's a convenient way to organize club business and invite people to shows and events... because it's great to have access to all the photos taken at a certain party rather than… [more]
