Sibling violence
I dont think saying 'you have the power to stop contributing to this dynamic' is the same thing as saying 'you deserved this.'

>>1st sentence below the fold.

With the number of other typos in the post, I didn't assume that "21m" was necessarily intended to mean "21, male." Not everyone is even familiar with that shorthand.

Winter Storm Xanto
Some NYC subway stations were flooded this morning, and in others there was rain pouring from the ceiling. A couple hundred flights were grounded as well.

And now, of course, the sun is out and there's no rain at all...

❄2018 Winter Check-In❄
I live in NYC and I was already on vacation until Monday. I want to make cookies and need butter and am trying to decide whether to walk the two blocks to the grocery store now, in the blowing snow, or tomorrow, when it will be astronomically colder but not snowing.

Butter secured.

When i went downstairs, i discovered that the fine snow had blown right through the miniscule gap between the door and the doorframe. Maybe a few cups' worth.

Resetting expectations about U.S. political discussion on MetaFilter
As someone who on and off has spent a LOT of time in those threads, I 100% support this move.

In 2008, back when political stuff on the front page was routinely deleted for being 'electionfilter,' I asked where I could go to find electionfilter stuff and was pointed toward the SomethingAwful forums' politics subforum. I was honestly skeptical but it really is pretty great, much more intelligent and less gross and bro-y than you might imagine. I have continued to vist those forums on and off ever since, and spent most of the last election splitting my time between our megathreads and… [more]

#NaNoWriMo2017
I am going to commit to writing every day in November. Not gonna set a word count for myself because I know I can't commit to hitting it, my schedule is too weird, but I want to take advantage of this opportunity to get back into the writing habit after a few months off.

I'm doing a 'spirit of the law but not the letter' thing. I've written in a journal every day this month so far, and today sat down to get back to the fanfic I put on hold before my job search earlier this year. Now I have the next chapter in decent enough shape that I think I can finish it in one or two more sessions, and after that, I'll move on to revising a piece of flash fiction I got critiqued by my writing group earlier this year. I'd like to submit it for publication before the month is… [more]

Help build MetaFilter’s savings
I work in the nonprofit industry, and the laser focus of donors (both individual and organizational donors) on their money "going directly to programs," ie "not going to staff salaries," is THE reason why we are all overworked and understaffed. People resent the notion that their donation might be part of the money that gets paid to me, and that I might then blow it on a margarita when it could have been placed directly into the hand of a starving child, etc. Which I get, on… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Shop Talk
Now that I have told the boss, I can tell the rest of y'all:

I got a new job!! Starting August 14th I'm gonna be the grants manager for a transportation advocacy nonprofit!

I've been interested in urban planning since high school and even considered applying to grad school for it. Now I get to learn and talk and write about it every day!

And on topic: I bought my friend some breastfeeding supplies off her baby shower… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: I'm disorganized!
In the past two weeks I've sent out five job applications. Today I heard back from two of them asking for interviews! I'm so happy! I mean they're just interviews but I was really scared I'd have to toss dozens of applications into the void before I got a single reply.

Metatalktail Hour: Wrongness in the Kitchen
One of my kitchen drawers will not stay closed - it constantly just sloooooowly slides open unless we take some sort of measure to hold it closed.

I would have made an attempt to actually fix it by now, rather than using temporary solutions... but when we first moved in, my roommate and I made up a ghost to explain it. Her name is Tiffany, she lived here in the 80s and died of an allergic reaction while trying to retrieve her epi-pen from that drawer. (We chose an… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Influential Media
Calvin and Hobbes kickstarted my love of the English language practically from the time I could read.

Guns Germs and Steel completely rewrote my understanding of reality and is the reason I became an anthropology major. It's not without its flaws but no other single book has influenced my life choices that much.

Yeah I wouldn't care about this in contact activity, but it would be neat to have for popular favorites.

Or - if it would be too much of a change to remove them entirely - could we just get the ability to view more popular posts/comments? I've never been sure why that isn't possible, anyway.

So whatcha workin' on?
I just posted this on Facebook a couple hours ago. I haven't done it yet myself.

"Here's a political action I plan to take, and that I urge others to take, that affects my home state of North Carolina as well as American voting rights in general. I'm posting about this so that I actually get off my ass and do it.

The gist: a strict NC voter ID and early voting law was overturned by an appeals court last summer. The court said that the law… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: My Favorite Thing about This Week
My Hell Month at work (which involved about 8 days of staying at work anywhere from 9pm to 2am, and one at-home Skype call which ended at 4am) is officially OVER! I came into work on February 1st feeling like I was on vacation. That night, I did three loads of laundry, cleaned my bedroom and living room and dining room, superglued three things which had been in desperate need of supergluing, moved some furniture and framed art around, assembled the wine rack my sister gave me for Christmas, and… [more]

I haven't even noticed the volume of posts, but I do have to agree that the dots feel like about as substantial a contribution as 'lol,' and more often than not, unless the person is some super beloved figure, I assume that the person who left the dot did so more out of a desire to chime in with 'oh yeah, me too, because that's a thing we do here' than out of any sincere expression of grief. Fuckin' duvet covers: how do they work?
A duvet is just a comforter with a cover on it, right? Is there any other difference between the two?
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 7:37 PM on November 30, 2016
I converted to Euro-style no top sheet after the first time this was debated on Metafilter in 2005. Never going back. Top sheets are useless.

Even in summer? If I slept under a duvet in summer I would sweat myself into a dehydration migraine every night
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 8:19 PM on November 30, 2016
Oh I knew that the type of blankety thing that goes inside a duvet cover is different from the type of blankety thing that doesn't, but once a duvet is covered, it is (I thought) functionally the exact same thing as a comforter.
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 8:29 PM on November 30, 2016
On those nights we just use the duvet cover itself, no duvet.

Huh! Mine has button closures on both ends - covered by a placket, so they don't bother me when the duvet is stuffed, but if I tried to sleep under it empty I think it would be super annoying. Do Euro-style ones not have that? Or is it just less annoying than I've been thinking?
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 8:31 PM on November 30, 2016
Note that however, a duvet replaces a bedspread as well.

Like, a bedspread as in a blanket aside from the comforter? I've never had anything like that, I always just used a comforter over a sheet before I got a duvet.
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 8:44 PM on November 30, 2016
Since we're talking about this, may I just drop in a link to Saffron Marigold, where I got this gorgeous Indian-block-print duvet cover? You can also get matching sheets and pillowcases if that's your jam.
posted to MetaTalk by showbiz_liz at 11:46 AM on December 1, 2016
I also don't make the bed in a formal sense, I just pull the covers up so that it looks somewhat neat and tidy, and sheets get washed and changed probably every two weeks.

Yeah, I've seen a few posts along the lines of "ugh, top sheets, then making your bed becomes a whole production where you have to tuck it in all nice. But with a duvet I can just pick it up and shake it out to cover the bed" and I'm like... well, yeah. And you can do… [more]

What are YOU doing?
I called all six of Senator Burr's offices just now (Senator from North Carolina). I wrote myself a script so that I wouldn't get all flustered (which I did anyways on the first call, but then it got a little better).

I've seen video clips on the "precedent" for internment and people have reacted appropriately horrified but does everyone really understand what that might look like? Shit I don't think that was even discussed when I was in school and I'm 36. The horrors of what we are imagining needs to be discussed in detail. POPULAR VOTE PERCENTAGES: 50% D - 44% R

The Election Debate Logistics Thread
For what it's worth, I totally get that perspective. I haven't and continue not to agree with it as where we're going on this, but it's not because I don't understand the categorical appeal of saying "this is a TV thing, it should go in the TV place". It's a reasonable organizational preference to have. I just don't agree that that categorical principle is the most salient one. That might change at some point, it might not; in any case, it definitely hasn't changed for me at… [more]

Reading those threads on mobile is nightmarish. Not only does it not jump down to the last comment because that comment hasn't loaded yet, I can't even nope out and 'skip to menu' because the very menu itself fails to load until the entire 10 billion comment thread loads [which often fails to happen entirely]. It totally sucks.
