I meant to write a genre-shattering zombie comic....

Dead Eyes Open: How I Screwed Up The Zombie Revolution I meant to write a genre-shattering zombie comic. What I actually wrote was an overambitious sprawling mess that started off well and devolved into complete incoherence. Now, with the publisher's permission, I'm blogging the entire run of my comic book Dead Eyes Open, with page-by-page notes and a particular focus on how things went horribly, horribly wrong in the writing process. First page here.

Giddy with the illusion of choice!

Just curious... why are the "Meta" and "Filter," "Meta" and "Talk," and etc. identifiers at the top left of each page discrete clickable elements instead of one clickable element comprising the entire compound word?

Fewer Twitters with caffeine jitters?

According to the Wall Street Journal, coffee shops in New York are starting to cut back on laptops -- by reducing WiFi privileges, removing outlets, or banning the machines outright. This article has spawned a vast number of spin-off pieces and conversations across the Web.

Trying to "solve" Rashomon is absolutely...

In Which I Ruin Rashomon For Everyone, Forever Trying to "solve" Rashomon is absolutely the stupidest possible way to approach this Kurosawa masterpiece. But diagramming it in a bullheaded attempt to figure it all out... that can only be described as a sensible use of one's time. Now with added Ted Sallis!

So I wrote the Captain Blood adaptation for SLG,...

Captain Blood and the Peril of Indie Comics! So I wrote the Captain Blood adaptation for SLG, and we were all kind of gloomy about its chances, given that rack space in comic shops for indie books is limited, especially for classic novel adaptations. Then we had an idea.

Handley pleads guilty

Christopher Handley has pleaded guilty to Possessing Obscene Visual Representations of the Sexual Abuse of Children. He faces a maximum of 15 years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and a three-year term of supervised release. What Handey was arrested for was not child pornography, however, but Japanese Manga. Recurring text box in Word?

I need to make a sticker sheet in MS Word updatable -- all the stickers on the sheet look the same, but if I type "Q" in the first sticker, "Q" will appear on all the other stickers. Is this possible?

"Police, stop or you will be hit with 50,000 volts of electricity!"

Taser use in law enforcement has been under increased scrutiny in recent years, especially following the death of Robert Dziekanski in a Vancouver airport last year after being Tasered by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (previously). Now the CBC and Canadian Press have sifted through over 5,000 incident reports to create a RCMP Taser use database, tracking use of tasers by Canada's federal law enforcement by province, incident, year or stuns used.

We've got a full tank of gas, two cats in carriers, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

Ramblin' up from Georgia to Vermont from March 26-28 with a new wife, two cats, and minimal luggage. So this is a two-pronged question: first, what do you recommend as a nice scenic fun route with minimal leave-the-car requirements, and second, how do you deal with two cats in one car for three days?

Short films, court métrages and more from up north

Mentioned here earlier in its beta form, Canada's National Film Board has released the bulk of its films online, for free, in the NFB Screening Room. With hundreds of films from the 1920s onwards, including groundbreaking work by animator Norman McLaren, documentaries, dramas, bizarre anti-smoking (or pro-smoking?) screeds and much, much more, it's a breathtaking trove of amazing film to be discovered from north of the 49th.

McCain: The Mavericking Maverick Mavericks More Basically a one-off Friday/Saturday done-on-the-GIMP project that took root in my brain when I realized that John McCain is essentially exactly the same character as Frank Miller's crazed sexagenarian Batman from The Dark Knight Returns. It's been linked to on a coupla blogs (and I mentioned it in The Palin Thread), but I'd like to see the meme spread, and I think it's fun.

Thick in size but thin in content

Quebec clothing chain Simons has pulled its newest catalogue after getting hundreds of complaints that the models in it were too thin. The genesis of the complaints may have been a story about the catalogue (and complaints) on Radio-Canada (Canada's French-language national broadcaster) about a week ago.

Julie, Don't Go!

While England had the Two Ronnies (earlier today), Canada had, more or less simultaneously, its own hit comedy duo in Wayne and Shuster. Johnny Wayne was the manic engine and Frank Shuster the perpetual straight man, and even if they weren't to your taste, you have to admit they never underestimated their audience -- with sketches like Shakespearean Baseball, (full versions on YouTube, in 1950s and 1970s flavours!) Rinse The Blood off My Toga (excerpt), and Frontier Psychiatrist (the latter being the sample base for a surprising hit by Melbourne-based band The Avalanches) combining the sciences, classical literature, pop culture and ancient history simultaneously.

Owney is a tramp, as you can plainly see. Only treat him kindly, and take him along with ye.

Owney the Postal Dog was the unofficial mascot of the U.S. postal service in the 1890s, riding the rails with the mails and accumulating an impressive collection of dog tags on a specially designed vest. He even made it as far as Japan, being issued a special postal class (Registered Dog Package) and an official Japanese passport. After an illustrious career, however, Owney met a sticky end -- shot by the police under dubious circumstances in Toledo in 1897.

Charity begins at home. And sometimes ends in jail.

The Banyan Tree Foundation promised to take donations from contributors to be redistributed to worthy Canadian recipients. The foundation also gave donors inflated charity receipts for tax declarations, and donors were encouraged to borrow money to contribute even more, and did... from a company now owned by Banyan Tree president Robert Thiessen. Now, the money has stopped flowing, and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has called the organization a "sham" and is going after Banyan donors for past charity receipts totalling more than CAD$100 million.

Moving at a speed of 100 inventions per year

Madman or genius? Well... madman. But being confined to an asylum (with one of his symptoms described as "manic invention") didn't keep Karl Hans Janke from developing elaborate theories of atomic energy, flight, space travel and the history of humanity, creating over 4,000 complex drawings and even models over 40 years of incarceration for paranoid schizophrenia.
