MeFi Nonprofit -- Volunteers, Purpose, Name
Would it be too obvious just to name the entity "MetaFilter Nonprofit"? (I guess people who wanted to abbreviate could do it as MeFiNoPro?)

MeFi Business/Legal Update Follow-Up
I'd also like to volunteer for coding and related technical stuff (if that's not premature).

* 25+ years of engineering experience, back-end, front-end, infrastructure
* Used to write a lot of ColdFusion

I could also be on a tech-related committee, should one be formed. I don't have any experience in that but I do have a lot of patience and a sunny disposition.

Last call for SC nominations
The roles defined (secretarial, comms, bizdev, etc.)

Sorry, are these roles actually defined anywhere? I didn't see them here or in the last thread. I've got some coding expertise and some free time and I think I could probably do something valuable on a technical level. I'm a bit wary about nominating myself for the SC as I'm hoping not to have as much free time in the medium-term future, and I feel like I'd be more useful at (and, selfishly, am… [more]

πŸ“’πŸ“’πŸ“’ Fundraiser Update 3: With your help, we’re charting a way forward
Selling checkmarks in every color could conceivably drum up some press for the site, too; maybe we could make them a temporary feature that would disappear after the fundraiser even.

After the Fire – Metafilter Should Consider Replacing Itself
Purely thinking of the technical issues here, because to me they seem much easier to solve than the community or funding issues...

Has there been any discussion of open-sourcing the codebase and putting it up on GitHub or something? I don't think we're at particular risk of someone else running a MetaFilter clone site at this point, and it would lower the friction for interested technical users to contribute. (I'm aware that this would involve a bunch of work for… [more]

Steering Committee Check-In: October 2022
About the coding thing, is there interest in having people from the community volunteer for technical tasks like coding, bug fixes and maintenance? (I realize there are a lot of thorny issues involved, but there are also a lot of community members with backgrounds that could be helpful.)

Music Swap 2020 | now in beta!
It doesn't seem like anything is getting saved when I hit "save and preview" - if I then open up the site in a new window none of the text I entered is there (also I'm not seeing a preview, just the same page again with the stuff I entered prepopulated). I tried disabling my adblock and firefox tracking protection, but it didn't change anything. Don't see any javascript errors in the console. Any advice, or am I just not understanding how to use the site?
posted to MetaTalk by whir at 10:40 AM on July 10, 2020
Thanks for checking, signal. I tried it in Chrome and creating and editing the mix worked fine there. Once it was created I was subsequently able to edit it in Firefox, so I'm guessing the problem (if it's not specific to my own setup somehow) was with initially creating the mix in Firefox. Anyways, I'm good to go for now, thanks!

I'm fine with extending the deadline too, though I'm done already, slackers.

One thing is I need to change my mix type from Spotify to file-sharing, and I didn't see any way to do that in the interface. (I couldn't find everything included on Spotify. Not sure the mix type actually does anything though?)

MetatalkMimosas: Your Music Muse!
Last winter for a birthday trip, my partner and I rented a little cabin near one of those cute little upstate NY towns, and had Ponta de Areia by Wayne Shorter on extremely heavy rotation on the way up in the car, and then inside the cabin as we sat by the fire reading. After my birthday dinner we wandered into some shops, and what should be playing but a cover of the song by Earth Wind and Fire. I prefer the original, frankly, but it was still one of those neat and extremely minor coincidences… [more]

Anybody dug into the Racial Justice & Inequality Bundle?
I also liked Islands: Non-places a lot as kind of a series of calm, peculiar environments with some very limited interactivity.

In a similar vein, Spring Falls is a mellow, peaceful little puzzle game about erosion and plants and running water which I've enjoyed.

I didn't get very far in it, and it's not the easiest game on the eyes, but I like what Crest is going for, it's a god game where all you can really do is write scriptural commandments… [more]

Oh, one or two I forgot to mention: Dr. Langeskov, the Tiger, and the Terribly Cursed Emerald is maybe my favorite game from the bundle so far, it's a funny little 15-minute game with a sense of humor similar to Portal.

I'm enjoying Golem Creation Kit for its extremely wonky mechanics and coloring-book art style, I find it pretty charming though I could easily imagine someone else disliking it for the same reasons. I also liked Code 7, an adventure… [more]

about how you fuck up every conversation and can never say the right thing

Ha, I had the same experience with Sojourner. Now you can do it even in your pandemic-induced total isolation from other human beings! I got an ending I didn't like, too, I wound up shipping off with the yuppie art usurper. Every time I got back from a trip I was so tired I couldn't have a decent conversation with my best friend. I will probably try to replay this now that I… [more]

State of the Site: Metafilter financial update and future directions
I agree about the need to improve the site's UI around donations, I set up a monthly subscription way back during the financial crisis of 2014, and when I logged in to paypal to cancel it and start a new one just now, I realized it got suspended some time back when the card it was tied to went dark. It would be great to be able to see my current subscription level and its status on MeFi itself - maybe there could be a field on the user settings page reading "last donation: $20 on May… [more]

On the contrary, MetaFilter and all these other sites are spinoffs of cat-scan.com.

A new theme for MeFi: Modern
Overall I think the changes are fantastic - great job!

I am with the users who would prefer that the top menu bar not continuously float, though. I recognize that it's handy to have access to various site functions without having to scroll to the top of the page, and it works way better on mobile than the old site did, but I just resent it when a site takes over a piece of my real estate - especially vertical space, which is limited on my laptop to begin with.… [more]

Yeah, we're working on a font prefs panel that's similar to what you see on a Kindle. So imagine being able to pick 4-5 different font faces, change sizes in increments from the existing size like so: -2, -1, 0, +1, +2 and other options (dark/light, titles yes/no).

That's fantastic - thanks!

MeFi Horror Film Club, #5: Martyrs
The last time I saw Martyrs I had about the same reaction to it that VikingSword did, but I'm curious to see it again and I'll try to keep an open mind.

As far as purely scary movies from fairly recently, I thought the first Ju-On movie was pretty good at setting up an impending sense of dread, plus there was a sense of randomness and inescapability that worked really well, I thought. Of course, since then the asian horror trope… [more]

A Serbian Film was definitely successful at being shocking, and it's well-directed from a technical point of view as well, which is unusual for a movie of that stripe. I agree with naju that I didn't really find its attempts to cloak a lot of disturbing, exploitative sex and violence in some kind of political statement all that convincing, but I can't say it didn't have an effect on me.

I can't speak for anyone else, and I find a lot of… [more]

MeFi Horror, #3 Carnival of Souls/#4 Pontypool
Carnival of Souls is also available for download and streaming at the Internet Archive, with no ads.
posted to MetaTalk by whir at 9:01 AM on June 30, 2014
Also, maybe I am just dead inside from all the horror movies I've watched, but I found Martyrs to be honestly kind of dull and not all that affecting, so I'd be interested in discussing it with people who it had a more profound impact on.

I agree that there are a lot of different subgenres of horror which aim for different effects in the viewer, but that's part o what's fun about the genre and I think it can only add to the discussion.
posted to MetaTalk by whir at 9:05 AM on June 30, 2014
I should clarify that I was kind of joking when I talked about being too dead inside to react to Martyrs the way everybody else on the internet seems to, mostly I just didn't think it was very good as a movie. I do also think I've seen enough movies that are self-consciously shocking that there needs to be something else beyond the shock value to get me engaged in a film, though, and I wasn't really finding it in that particular movie. But I don't want to jump the gun on a… [more]

Well, Martyrs is French, for what it's worth, so it qualifies. I'm ok with it myself, though I've also been thinking a giallo might be good at some point. I'll also put in another vote for A Tale of Two Sisters, which I like a lot but haven't seen since it came out.

MeFi Horror Film Club, #2: Noroi/The Curse
For old-school movies, I'll throw in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the 1974 version, natch), currently the subject of this cool post on the front page. I'd also see any of the Hammer films, as I haven't seen as many as I probably should. I'd watch any on drnecessiter's suggestions, too, and I'll rewatch The Thing with the least provocation, though I've already seen it tons of times.

MeFi Horror Film Club
I'm totally in for this (though I think I've already seen about 90% of the films mentioned so far). I'll throw in another vote for Absentia.

For a title that's over on the thriller / serial-killer side of the genre, I'll throw in the Korean movie I Saw the Devil (2011), which is streaming on Netflix.

I got some low-budget oldie nominations, too. I quite like Carnival of Souls (1962), available here, and then there is the underrated Incubus… [more]

Swap Me Maybe Mailing Deadline Reminder - Thurs Feb. 28!
Hey, Tamburitzas, I'm a little late but I've got the discs a-burning and should be able to mail them out this weekend, or possibly Monday, sorry for the delay.
