Get off the internet
I picked up some magazine subscriptions for this very reason. I wanted something to fill those little moments where you would otherwise scroll through the web while you are between things. It has actually been really cool to have tangible things within reach to flip through that also don't ask for the same level of commitment as a book does.

I like fiction magazines and have been really enjoying Infinite Worlds and the first issue of Infinite Horror. They are a grab bag… [more]

Oh, if you're adventurous you could subscribe to Stack. They will send you a different independent magazine every month. Browsing through their previous month's magazines might be a good way to find something that interests you.

Goodies to bring from BC to DC
Honestly, Victoria is kind of a small city and it doesn't have much that I would consider world class or truly unique as far as good goes. The closest that you can get is if you come at the right time of year and are respectful, you can taste camas root.

I will second the suggestion for salmon products. Candied, smoked, canned, whatever your poison. What you can get here is almost certainly better than what you can get in DC.

media recommendations for an anxious, intense introvert
For movies: Columbus (2017) and Paterson (2016). I'll also vouch for Amelie, which is much more sweet and sincere than I think people expect it to be. Some others that I think are close: Her, Punch-Drunk Love, Lars & The Real Girl, and maybe Lost In Translation. And a longshot that might hit you just right: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring.

Ratio for cold brew that equals a shot of espresso?
General coffee wisdom is that cold brew extracts about 80% of the caffeine that an equal weight hot brew would extract. Assuming a strong espresso pull of 9g and a standard 30ml cup then you want 11g per 30ml or 363g in your (almost) 1L of water.

FYI - people do this all the time. It is called "Cold Brew Concentrate."
posted to Ask MetaFilter by forbiddencabinet at 4:38 PM on June 11, 2022 marked best answer
Using the 80% extraction number that is going to be around 21g extracted/300ml. That would make it closer to a triple shot, assuming the espresso shot in question is the typical 7-9g. YMMV, of course.

Classic stoner films (maybe even a documentary too?)
What I would recommend for a documentary is The Botany of Desire which isn't exclusively about cannabis, but is infinitely more interesting than the more politically motivated docs of yesteryear. That said, if you want an exhaustive one of the political bent then The Culture High is probably the one I would go with since it goes to great lengths to cover the entire discourse.

What is this music I want to hear?
I think that Mos Def track might technically be trip-hop or acid jazz since he is singing over jazz samples. If you're down for instrumental then MF Doom's Special Herbs & Spices is filled with beats like that. You might also like other turntablists in that vein like Blockhead or The Avalanches.

Traffic is a prog rock band that leans towards the jazz and jam band end of the style. Steely Dan is a similar group that you might like.

Roller shades, to blocketh the light and not lighten thy pocketh
After much research and annoyance at how much shades/blinds/curtains cost for how little you get, I ended up going with Blinds Galore. They ended up being a little less than Home Depot/Budget Blinds/etc for my purposes. They seem to be of the same quality as anywhere else I looked, although I assume if you spend *real* money on this sort of thing you do end up with something better, but my suspicion is that anything even remotely affordable is of the same quality level.… [more]

What to do with maple syrup jelly?
You can use maple syrup anywhere you would use honey, brown sugar, or other syrups like agave. It will add a little bit of maple flavour for a little complexity to the sweetness, so you probably don't want to swap it in where white sugar or simple syrup is called for unless you want to bring in flavour and not just sweet.

It is good for baking, but I think it really shines when used in sauces, dressing, or glazes. Try making a simple balsamic and maple syrup salad… [more]

Find me gentle, fictional, happy ending TV
Eureka. It is as formulaic and familiar as a police procedural, but instead of murders it is science experiments gone awry and a bumbling, bemused sheriff trying to wrangle superscientists. There are occasionally deaths, usually accidental and not murders, and the season finales tend to be a bit darker than the comic lightheartedness of the rest of the show. Overall, quite fluffy.

Can I stop Windows updates?
Windows Update shouldn't be using up all your drive space. Windows does leave behind some update files for an extended under some circumstances, but it should not be using up a substantial amount of drive space. Either something else is taking up your drive space, there is something wrong with Windows Update, or you have a preposterously small SSD. I strongly advise you dig into that rather than disable or ignore windows updates as doing so will be an increasingly large security risk.… [more]

I just received the March/April 2022 edition in the mail, so they're still going. They've been kind of no-frills for a while now. Their website only seems to update sporadically and if you need to contact them to change your address or something they seem pretty slow to respond. one-off RPG for 3
How experienced are you? Most of the adventures written for organized play societies like D&D Adventurer's League or Pathfinder Society or intended for single session play, so targeted at around 4 hours. The adventures are affordably priced and can be used outside of the context of organized play easily enough. Examples of film and TV shows where light is evil
The Color Out of Space? Technically a color, but it presents more as light in the 2020 movie.

Another one is Mysterons in the old Captain Scarlet TV show. They are represented as rings of light. They often projected over top of destruction or death to represent their influence or, in some cases, that they would be bringing a character back to life under their influence.

Piano practice, but fun
I think chords are the way to go. If you are able to learn a basic progression like I – V – vi – IV then you will be able to noodle out from there in a very satisfying way. You don't need to learn the underlying theory, just look up a video demonstrating piano chord progressions and go from there.

For larger businesses, chains, or those attached to a hotel you'll typically see things auctioned off through somewhere like Kwik or Able in lots. Smaller businesses usually sell to a liquidator like Anzico or directly to another restaurateur.

What language was it in? The only thing close that I can think of is Look Who's Back, which is a comedy where Hitler appears in present-day Berlin with no memory of events past 1945 and nobody believes that he is actually Hitler.

What kind of media do you have?

Generally, it shouldn't look that different. My Biomax media just looks a little browner compared to the bright white of when it is fresh. It's also slicker to the touch. If it were visibly covered in slime I would be concerned (and suspect light is getting into the filter area.)

A portable air conditioner would work for this. You are correct that they are also dehumidifiers. They have a bad reputation because they are less efficient and effective at cooling than window units or central options, but they still do the job and sound like the right tool for your situation.

Without knowing which VoIP service you are using I would hazard a guess that the reason this doesn't work is that your VoIP phone number is registered as a landline, so discord is rejecting it as an option. That scene doesn't read as romantic to me, just sexualized. As others noted it is very much in keeping with Hitchock's tastes, so I think the bold sexual frankness is a male fantasy and part of the overall gaze of the film. According to UPS if you want to ship ice cream you should use dry ice or gel packs. Note that they are assuming regular ice cream and not soft serve, which in my experience undergoes a change if it gets frozen. For that reason, the gel packs might be a better choice than the dry ice since that will probably freeze it solid.
