I was born in Haifa (Israel), I failed high school English, and I had my arm broken by a police officer during a struggle.

In the context of this discussion it's not so surprising, but when, in groups of people who know me, I say "I was born in Jerusalem", there's usually a round of stunned silence.

This is one of the first poems I ever read in High School English class. My teacher at the time was...weird and intense, and I clearly remember the discussion about this poem. How complex it is, how nuanced and intense the language.

She pushed the abortion interpretation (which some quick googling does not make obvious), which has stayed with me to this day, and is what I think of whenever someone says the name of the poem.

I am thinking of the most sacred headspace of all, which exists in absolute opposition to the thick loud smog of the present. That is the headspace of the first book. Before anything happens. The air there is so thin and sharp and keeps you in a kind of exquisite pain. It is crowded with flowers, which open into red throats like tiger lilies, ready to speak.

I love her writing, and am always glad to see it here.
