I’m not actually swallowing any goldfish
Perhaps inspired by the fact that swallowing goldfish was a weirdly popular college fad in the 1930s.

How do I save a Wikipedia article from deletion?
Looks like it was tagged in December for not citing any sources. Factual claims in Wikipedia articles need to be supported by in-line citations to a reliable source, the sort indicated by the numbered footnotes scattered liberally around most articles. The lone external link to the Procidis website at the end doesn't count (and is broken regardless).

The recent flag is just a "proposed deletion" (PROD), which is a quick-and-easy way for users to flag problem… [more]

Do the Brian Herbert/Kevin Anderson Dune books get any better?
If you still want more, read the fantastic Dune Encylopedia, which Herbert personally approved of and wrote a foreword to but which the estate disavowed in favor of the sequels after his death. (previously)

Can you remove ads from free YouTube app for iOS these days?
Depending on your device and iOS version you may be able to jailbreak and install tweaks to block YouTube ads, but it's a rather fiddly process and these days the window for a workable jailbreak is quite narrow. This may change if/when the EU forces Apple to allow sideloading third-party software but that's still a few years off.

Browser based games that don't require commitment or much attention
I've been a big fan of Antgame.io since it featured on MeFi a few months ago. Just the right combination of strategy and luck, the games are short but interesting to watch unfold, and you can leave it running in the background (and watch it catch up at high speed when you switch back).

Did Dall-E change the way it does inpainting? How do I do it now?
1. Are you maybe selecting "Generate variations" instead of "Edit image"? That generates similar versions of the entire image, not just the erased part.

2. If you're erasing the background in a photo editor yourself and saving as a transparent PNG to upload, you have to erase a small part of the already-erased area in DALL-E for it to recognize the empty space.

3. It has more trouble with small/intricate masking; if you're… [more]

Best Video Game Journalism
A bit unconventional, but videogamedunkey's review of Super Mario Odyssey was so overflowing with joy, adoration, and love that it single-handedly convinced me to buy a Nintendo Switch, and judging from the comments I'm hardly the only one.

In a similar vein, the Play.tm pre-release review that originally put Katamari Damacy on my radar was one of the very few at the time to recognize it not just as a goofy physics puzzler, but a genuinely affecting… [more]

It's not MetaFilter, its me (I think)
Thanks for the bug reports, everyone. Staff is aware and looking into the Cloudfront issue -- we've got a *possible* lead on the problem, should have a better idea what exactly is going wrong in a few hours. Thanks for your patience.

(Also, I'm not in webdev myself but I'd guess the variance in working vs. not working is probably a cache issue; if one of your devices is loading the stylesheet okay it should continue to work as long as you don't force-refresh or clear your browser cache.)

Why did Game of Thrones end when it did?
I doubt the contract details are public, but AFAIK the scuttlebutt is that it was some combination of running out of written source material to adapt (the last seasons were based on Martin's outlines for the final books plus original material that clearly wasn't up to snuff), and the showrunners wanting to move on to other projects (which ended up fizzling).

Gary Cooper's Craneshot.
Might be a bit on the nose, but Danny Boyle's Sunshine (2007) is a memorable sci-fi take on this. Nominally about a mission to reignite a dying Sun, it starts off beautiful but treats it more and more like a mind-warping Lovecraftian horror the closer they get. No spoilers, but imho that angle really helps redeem a third act twist that a lot of folks complain about.

Assuming you've seen this 90s ident, but tossing it in just in case.

Daily word games or puzzles
I sampled a lot of the inspired-by clones, but the only one that really stuck was Arkadium's Hurdle. It's like regular Wordle but with five rounds -- the answer to each is your default first guess for the next round (forcing you to use new strategies instead of sticking with your favorite opener), and then in the last round the answers from the previous rounds become your first four guesses, leaving only two chances to figure out the final word.

Fun with Gmail
FWIW, Google seems to have made some kind of change on June 1st that reset third-party access, hence your login troubles. I had the same thing happen to some of my iOS apps. But you should be able to log back in using app-specific passwords -- basically you have Google generate a unique password for just one service. I haven't used Thunderbird in a looong time, but you might have to do this to log into your Gmail account there, too. This page goes into some more detail on how.

How does Marvel describe your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman in French
I pulled up the French subtitles for the original 2002 movie; they translate it there as:

Votre fidèle serviteur Spider-Man. (I'm your faithful servant Spider-Man)

Also found the line from Homecoming (2017):

Essaie d'être un gentil Spider-Man de quartier. (Try to be a nice neighborhood Spider-Man)

Printer won't print
Longer-term, do yourself a kindness and get a monochrome laser printer. I suffered through various inkjet printers for years -- inexplicable connection issues, partial prints, gummed-up nozzles, test prints that wasted obscene amounts of expensive ink, refusal to print anything when just one color was low, etc. etc. etc. Every single print job led to a different obscure problem and a different laborious troubleshoot process. It was the bane of my existence. Even the "good" brands… [more]

Part 2

Might have more luck searching around that time, unless this was a different or early version.

GamingFilter: WASD keyboarding is hard on my left hand!
You can try playing with a gamepad maybe? Most modern PC games support it, either wireless or via USB. I use an Xbox One controller myself, but I think Stream will let you configure a 360 or PS3/4/5 one if you have one handy. You can also custom bind all keys or use community-made ones, even if the game doesn't natively support it.

Websites for collaborative writing
Here's an out-there suggestion: OpenAI recently made their bleeding-edge text-completion engine GPT-3 publicly available with no waitlist. It has a free trial and usage after that is fairly cheap for non-scale experimentation. Working with the AI's prompt-based system takes some getting used to, and there are some limitations on what you can write about (no porn, graphic violence, political propaganda, etc.), but beyond that its capacity to write believable, collaborative text is incredible.
