Why are ethnonyms and nationalities proper nouns?

Everywhere I look on the internet, ethnonyms and nationalities (Turk, Serb, Pole, etc) are considered proper nouns. Same for members of a religious group (Jew, Christian, etc). This doesn't seem to fit with the definition of a proper noun. Why is this?

Hidden Object Game!

Long long ago, before the search for things buried in images proliferated on mobile platforms, there was this classic early example. A true test of your observation skills, it will keep you going for some time. The editor of this image has cleverly hidden within it a can of Spam. Can you find it? It has stymied tens of thousands of searchers for over twenty years. Good luck to you, internet user, and find that spam!

Learning about gender online: Is it possible to avoid drama/trolls?

Do you have any advice for avoiding overly heated responses when attempting to learn about gender identity online? Is it just part of the package I have to learn to deal with?

Tesla battery pack capacity confusion

I'm confused about the Tesla battery pack specifications. My understanding is that when you add cells in series their overall capacity stays the same - it's only when you add them in parallel that you add the capacities. But the spec seems to be as if the modules that make up the pack are both in series and in parallel! Maths below the fold.

What men's hot-weather garment am I looking for?

What's the men's version of a housedress or caftan? It could even be a housedress or caftan, but I'm in search of something that'll fit a 6'1" man with a medium-large frame. It should be: good for hot weather, so of thin or breathable fabric; not have too many constrictions like buttons or elastic; go in the washing machine; orderable online; something you just pull over your head and wear all day.

Some of you have new names now

I've installed a language learning extension in my browser called Toucan which changes an assortment of words on whatever page you're looking at into your target learning language -- in my case French -- with the idea that you will learn that vocabulary in the context of your primary language. But what's currently cracking me up is that when I open a page on Metafilter: communauté weblog, it often chooses to translate bits and pieces of peoples usernames.

Cheap but decent accommodation on Manhattan

Heading over in October and would like to stay pretty centrally on Manhattan. The mrs is really into hotels, I am open to other alternatives. Own bathroom a must, walkup a no-go due to lack of fitness.

Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Sunken Ship Endurance Found 10,000 Feet Down

Endurance: Shackleton's lost ship is found in Antarctic – 107 years after it sank, the Endurance, the lost vessel of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, was found at the weekend at the bottom of the Weddell Sea. The ship was crushed by sea-ice and sank in 1915, forcing Shackleton and his men to make an astonishing escape on foot and in small boats. Video of the remains show Endurance to be in remarkable condition. Even though it has been sitting in 3km (10,000ft) of water for over a century, it looks just like it did on the November day it went down. Its timbers, although disrupted, are still very much together, and the name - Endurance - is clearly visible on the stern. BBC, March 9, 2022.

Illustrated Horror Film Posters

"I am a fan of the illustrated posters that used to be the staple of nearly every science fiction and horror film released. These posters are able to communicate so much about a film with a single, masterfully created image that it’s a shame this style isn’t so popular nowadays."

How to look up obsolete word meaning?

Suppose I’m reading literature from the 1700s. I read a word and I know its modern meaning, but I think it meant something different then. What’s the easiest way to find what it meant 300 years ago? Free solutions preferred.

Thunder, Thunder, Thunder

I was blown out of the atmosphere when [Grateful Dead drummer] Billy Kreutzmann said he wanted me to take a crack at writing the music to these lyrics by the late great Robert Hunter [previously]. I cried like a baby for like an hour after I hung up the phone.
Bluegrass phenomenon Billy Strings [previously, previously] premiered Thunder in Louisville, KY last May.

What's your non-Amazon online retailer of choice?

In an attempt to retrain my shopping habits, I'm looking for retailers that cover a decently broad category (i.e. Chewy for pet needs, Powell's for books) rather than item-specific sellers. Product reviews & fast shipping are important to me. Not being owned by Jeff Bezos is also important to me.

Help me set up a playlist for kid-friendly dance parties!

We like to have a "party" for our kids (8 & 3) every now and then. This involves queueing up a bunch of Youtube music videos, playing them very loudly and letting the kids jump all over the living room for 45 minutes or so until they collapse in a puddle of sweat. The songs have to be fast, with strong rhythm, pumping, very energetic, generally in the pop/rock genre. My kids' absolute favorite song is "I Like To Move It" from Madagascar. They don't speak English, just a few words, so lyrics are generally not an issue, except audible swear words. (But we'd prefer no inappropriate chorus lines, so they don't memorize it and start running around screaming something that might offend English-speaking adults...) What are your suggestions for the playlist?

Psychedelic Therapy...Self guided?

At the recommendation of my psychiatrist, I would like to try using a mushroom to help me continue working through some big and tough stuff that has happened over the last three years. In a perfect world, I would like to do this under the care of an experienced therapist but for *reasons* I suspect that will not be possible. How do I lay the foundation for a positive self-guided or partner-guided experience in my own home?

The most comfortable mens' pants...?

Nearly a year of not wearing office/dress pants as I work remotely has left me with the realization that the few casual pants I do own are unsuitable for sitting for long periods of time, and I'm tired of exclusively wearing sweats. I've seen a few previous Ask Qs that focus on jeans or work pants, but I'd broaden the question to: What are the most comfortable, currently available pants, i.e., non-sweatpants, you can recommend for a man of average height/weight? Thanks.

YOUtube time limits from ROUTER?

I would like to set up my router so that between say 10am and 6pm, Youtube can only be used for 15 minutes, on any device. I would settle for 15 minutes PER device, but ANY device would be better. Please point me to software that will do this. OpenDNS apparently only either blocks sites or not, no time limits or schedule allowed.

What are the most "moral" books you know of?

In my quest to find more fiction books to read that don't make me quit ten pages in, I've realised that there's a quality to literature I enjoy that could be described as engaging with morality, ethics, goodness, right living, those sort of things. And doing so deliberately and as the most important part of the book. As opposed to those things being kind of subservient to plot and character, etc. Some examples inside. I'd like to find more books like this, if you could offer any suggestions.

Vaccine-positive information for reluctant healthcare workers

I am in Oregon, supervising caregivers who fall into the 1a category for covid vaccinations; that is, the vaccine is available to them and they are encouraged to sign up to receive it. These are caregivers who work with a vulnerable population who are generally at a much higher risk for covid complications, but a surprising majority of caregivers are reluctant to obtain the vaccine. Any (preferably) videos you can point me to that might convince them to give it a go?
