Best non-iron shirt in 2018

What is the best non-iron shirt in 2018? I have previously purchased Brooks Brothers shirts, based on a recommendation from Metafilter several years ago. I have been purchasing these, but noticed a drop in quality in recent years. They don't last. They rip after a year or two of use

How do you deal with implicit bias when it could affect you?

It turns out that implicit bias makes it harder to do many things when you're not a white male, including getting interviews for jobs, riding the bus, and even getting restaurant recommendations from your hotel. How do you actually deal with this?

Classical Music - looking for contrasting performances of the same piece

I'm looking for some recommendations from some classical music heads of two or more performances of the same piece, both which differ from each other and are good (or great) versions of the composition they're representing. I realized I don't know what kind of variances occur, and I'm looking to understand that.

Cardboard construction plans

No Default Browser Please!

I use both Firefox and Chrome on my windows 10 machine, usually only having one open at a time. Each instance has way too many tabs. When I click a link from an email or some other source, my default browser opens. If the default browser isn't the one that I happen to have open at the time, then there's an explosion of new tabs and a spike in memory usage as the other one tries to start.

Alternative to 1984

Hey folks! I have a book dilemma. We're reading 1984 for my Mass Media class and I'm not in the mood for misogyny this week, so my professor said I could read something else because they're great. However, I have to come up with some sort of alternative.

What is passive voice, and why is it so bad?

For years I have been told that I write with a lot of passive voice, but I have never really understood what this is and why it is so bad. Is this just a bunch of baloney, or is there something really wrong with using the passive voice that I do not appreciate? Assuming that I really should stop using the passive voice, how do I learn to avoid it? What worked for you?

Find a retail partner for a nerdy idea

I have an idea for a household product with an artsy nerdy design - the kind of thing that you might have seen on ThinkGeek back in their heyday. It might be an even better fit for art and design museum stores. As far as I can tell, ThinkGeek doesn’t accept unsolicited submissions, and they abandoned their IdeaFactory user submission process years ago. Are there any other pop culture nerdy retailers I could approach, or designer/manufacturers who sell to museum stores? Or should I just put it up as a print-on-demand product on society6 or something?

How can I buy wind-up mechanisms?

I want to make my own wind-up toys, by which I mean I want to make things and stick wind-up mechanisms inside them. Metal visible parts strongly preferred, but other than that I don't need anything fancy - fancy things I don't need include antique parts, expensive kits or wholesale quantities. I just know there are lots of cheap wind-up toys, so I'd like to think there's some way to buy the mechanism for a similar price.

Let an acquaintance live in an RV in our driveway?

My husband and I are considering letting an acquaintance & her daughter (we have mutual friends) park her RV in our driveway and live there for six months to a year in order for them to save some money. We want to help her out, but we don't want to put ourselves in a bad situation. What should we be thinking about before saying yes or no to this arrangement?

A thousand fonts, quantified

Anatomy of a Thousand Typefaces is a nifty online tool that helps you find fonts to use by implementing some of the ideas in Cole's Anatomy of Type book. As explained in this post, it uses objective ways to classify fonts by things like the height of the "x" character and the proportions of letters, which make it easier to find similar (or different) fonts. Turn on advanced filters to see the cool area charts.

Getting started with DIY electrical

I am trying to improvement my DIY electrical skills. I have replaced a few plugs and switches as long as the wires are a obvious match to the new fixture. But to complete my project of updating all the plugs, switches, and added fan timer switches in the house. I need to improve my understanding of wiring. I signed up for a adult continuing education class for electrical but they canceled it due to low enrollment. Youtube videos are helpful but I have some wiring in my house that is not standard due the house being built in 1976. So, I need to learn to use a voltmeters to identify the correct wires in some fixtures. I have some handy co-workers but everyone is too busy to impose on them every time I run into a odd setup. I need recommendations for books, classes, etc... I am even pay someone for one on one instruction.

Fiction that changes (daily) lives?

What are some fiction books you've read that changed your outlook on daily life after you finished them? I'm thinking of books that have the potential to make daily life seem more interesting and adventurous, or to give a new perspective on the seemingly mundane. Maybe they cause you to adopt a new persona, or envision yourself as a character involved in some sort of intrigue. Non-fiction will be considered, but I'm not looking for self-help books so much as inspiration to see things in a more exciting light.

Help me build a post-Trump reading list

After Trump's victory, I feel the need to study, reflect, examine my assumptions about the world, and seek insight and solace. I'm looking for books that will help.

Gripping nonfiction books about THINGS

I realized recently that I like nonfiction books that are about things -- books that don't have an obvious narrative, but that are exciting to read nonetheless. Any suggestions?
