Lamont Dozier, 1941-2022
Lamont could write and produce! I first came upon his name/work when I was looking up who wrote How Sweet It is (linked in the post). It was being performed by Jerry Garcia and the JGB. (Today is the anniversary of Jerry's death. RIP)

I am sorry he never made it big as a solo performer, but I am so thankful for his contributions on all those MoTown hits! Although I am an unabashed Deadhead, my favorite section in my album collection are my Four Tops, Spinners, Supremes,… [more]

Who Needs Friends?
After my divorce, my biggest fear was growing old alone. I don't even particularly like people, just that it is lonely going through life alone. Just a spouse or gf is all I need, but having friends is special. Real friends. Ones you don't even have to ask for help, they just show up. I have always had a small group of really good friends. I am still friends with 6 HS buddies some 40 years later, still friends with about 5 college buddies, and have what we call the core four here in town.… [more]

This is Vin Scully, wishing you a very pleasant good afternoon.
Another giant of sports and an even greater giant of a man lost. I am a Yankees fan who used to use his MLB season subscription to listen to a few innings of Dodgers baseball when Vin was still being Vin. Baseball, hot dogs and Vin Scully. Nothing could be finer.

Bill Russell (1934-2022): basketball legend, civil rights activist
An amazing basketball player. An even more amazing man.

It's hard to overstate Russell's importance and the crap he dealt with, and if you don't know him, it's worth reading about him.

Daily Email, Re: The Boss (no, the good one)
I sort of met Bruce once. I was down in Redbank on business. I stopped in a bar/restaurant for a burger and a beer. Being alone, I was going to sit at the bar. Closer to the beer! Anyway, I walked in and it appeared as if all or most of the seats at the bar were taken. Then this person stood up to leave. I walked up to them and asked them if they were leaving. Then I actually looked up and paid attention and it was Bruce. I stammered something about the Boss, his music and something… [more]

The deadliest road in America
I taught my kids that being right about who has the right of way when they are crossing certain local streets on foot is incidental. Big deal you had the right of way, I am finding the right clothes for your funeral. Always assume the driver is going to ignore you. Never stand off the curb waiting to cross. Never start to cross after the walk sign starts counting down. If you can, even when you have the lgiht and the right of way and everything else on your side, run like a scared bunny… [more]

RIP Choco Taco (1983-2022)
What this really brings back for me is Eddie the Ice Cream Man. A WW II vet who had one of those Good Humor trucks that would play the music and me and my brothers circa 1969 would coming running out to get our Chocolate Éclair or Strawberry Shortcake. Old Eddie would talk to us for what seemed like hours but was probably 3 or 4 minutes. We loved to ask him about the war, but he would say, "Why talk about war when we can talk about ice cream!"

EC, those pictures on your link are adorable. The big grey dog and the dachshund!

There is a fine line between having the right or the ability and playing by the rules versus respecting your neighbors or others that might be affected. I think that consideration of others even while doing something legal or ok by the rules and regulations is lost too often. I don't want to sound like and old guy get offa my lawn, but times they have changed.

Mortification: The Urgent Desire To have The Earth Swallow You Whole
First year in college a passing friend starts calling me Joey instead of Johnny. It went on for years. I got so used to it that I would turn my head when his voice said Joey. Fast forward to the last semester of school. Someone comes up to me when he was standing there and calls me Johnny. He had this big smile and in his southern drawl said, "Shoot. I done screwed up for 3 and a half years. Sorry about that." I just laughed and said I had been called much worse than Joey.… [more]

Hearings on 1/6 Capitol Attack—The Second Month
Yawn. I am buying the nothing will come of this. It is frustrating, but that is my take on what will happen. What exactly will the DOJ charge Trump with? Carjacking?

Trump is a bad man. A very bad man. Even most republicans will agree with that. Is that still in dispute? The problem with the hearings is that their bipartisan credibility is nil and they are preaching to the choir.

If FIFTY BANKERS ever arrive at your office all at once...
So I was a floor trader in Chicago for many years. This particular story took place circa 1987. I had a clerk who found a new product and a way to arbitrage them. Essentially, a stock was broken into its two components, price appreciation (or devaluation) and the dividend cash flows. Primes and Scores. Buy one of each and you have the underlying stock. Buy one prime and one score and sell the underlying stock for more than the sum of the parts and you have an arbitrage. The problem is… [more]

Brittney Griner Pleads Guilty
I have no direct knowledge of Brittney's situation, but it appears to me that this guilty plea is a prelude to some deal. Maybe, they sentence her to time served plus a few weeks and then release her? The Russians, in the West's eyes, could use some good PR. Or, Brittney was advised that it is better in terms of punishment to plead guilty than to get convicted at trial. Brittney is clearly under a lot of stress.

A problem now is that the families of other political… [more]

"Never heard of a potato, looks pretty good."
My ex wife's parents decided when she was born that they were going to teach her the word "apple" for an onion and "onion" for an apple. Merrily she went until about the 4th grade when she was at a friend's house and the mother asked if she wanted a slice of apple. She wondered who would eat a slice of apple (onion). Then it came out on a plate. My ex blurted out, "That's not an apple, that is an onion." Hilarity ensued when her friend's mother tried to figure… [more]
