Another layer of mediation to an already loopy transmission
I have a good friend that collects blotter paper (unmedicated) sheets. He has at least a 100 or maybe even hundreds of different sheets. He has some really beautiful ones framed. Brings back lots of memories when I look over his collection.

It was my experience that the dude dropping drops of acid on each square was usually not of steady hand. Our solution to get consistent doses was to take two figuring they would average out. (We got that suggestion from a guy… [more]

The Seinfeld Roundtable
Seinfeld is having a sort of resurgence this month. I put him in my category of "never gets old". Included in that category for me is George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Don Rickles, Rodney Dangerfield, Jackie Mason, Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, Groucho Marx, Lenny Bruce, Jackie Gleason, Tim Conway, Lily Tomlin, Don Knotts, Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams and many more. I am quite sure I am leaving too many off this list. Not necessarily comedians per se, but people who can sustain my… [more]

The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Martha and the Vandellas and so many more
I make no secret of my love for the Grateful Dead and to a lesser extent classic rock. By the time I graduated from HS circa 1979 I had been to two dozen Dead shows, 5 or 6 Allman Brothers, a Lynyrd Skynyrd show, etc. What my friends never got was my love for Motown. My favorite album of all time is the Four Tops Live and in Concert. The Spinners, the Tops, The Supremes and so many more are just amazing music.

What many people don't know is that the Grateful Dead play… [more]

Tis no man tis a remorseless eating machine
Beefsteak Charlie's (Glen Cove Rd) circa 1979, all the beer, wine or sangria you could drink with the order of a full priced entree. I think it was all the salad and shrimp you could eat too. Regardless, tell an 18 yo HS kid (legal 18 yo drinking then) he can get a meal and all the beer he can drink for the price of a meal he was going to eat anyway...saved us ALOT of money not having to drink at the bar.

Roofman
My brothers and I built a secret blanket fort in a corner of the basement that my mom did not discover until a week later when we refused to come to dinner because it was meatloaf night.

Maybe Floorman escaped from prison because of the nasty meatloaf they served.

"Tonight I miss one legendary Quentin Tarantino."
Maybe I am shallow or some kind of bad person, but I loved all of Tarantino's movies. If I had to pick a favorite it would be The Hateful Eight. I loved the acting, the premise, and the fact that, after the stage coach scene, the rest of the movie took place in the one room of the haberdashery.

I like Brad Pitt generally (see:Fury), but in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood I hated his character which I think was the point. I think Bruce Dern does a very good job with his off… [more]

Can we all agree that QT himself is a terrible actor and the small parts he puts himself in are not worth the film they are recorded on?

As for Reservoir Dogs, I will watch it whenever it comes on cable, but there are many parts of it that are slow and probably not necessary. I do think the Stuck in the Middle With You scene is one of my favorites though for some reason (I do like the song a lot independent and before the I saw the scene).

And when it's time for leavin', I hope you'll understand
Grew up a huge fan of the Allman Brothers. The classics have all been mentioned above. What I came to love after Dickey was kicked out was the first and second Dickey Betts and Great Southern albums. Run G*psy Run and Sweet Virginia had me appreciating Dickey even more.

Just being transported along with one of Dickey's jams while high on bad 1970s paraquat weed is one of the lasting memories of my youth. Dickey and Duane were one of the reasons I came to love the… [more]

Jerry was a junkie, but always has seemed like a good due. Bobby is still kicking it at whatever his age and beard is at. Phil seems to be sick

Jerry was more like an addict than a junkie in my mind although I am not sure of the distinction other than I think addict is more not in your control than junkie. Bob is now and always has been to me fried, burnt beyond repair. He is/was younger than the other band members. He joined when he was 16, about… [more]

Freak Earthquake Shakes the East Coast
Felt it pretty good here in northern Westchester County about 50 miles from the epicenter. My chair on wheels was moving and I have 6 monitors on one pole on my desk. They were DANCING!

Was one in SF when I lived in Marin in the late 90s. This felt about the same. The one in LA I felt that woke me up from a nap was less. Once you have felt one, the next time it is obvious what it is.

The Cut Has Done It Again
True story. I know a billionaire who divorced his wife of 35(?) years with whom he has 7, yes seven, children. He ended up marrying a Polish "model". (I put that in quotes because I never saw and he could not find anything she actually got paid to model. No pictures, no magazines, no video, no nothing.) The 2nd wife was 35 or so years younger.

Anyway, we were drinking at a hotel bar and got to talking. I am divorced too. I knew him well enough to be… [more]

Generations ain't nothing but a number
I was born in the early 60s. My parents were 12 in 1945 when the war ended. I don't see how I can be considered a post war Boomer.

As for what's your sign, I am old enough to have had a NY paper license, I also had a copy of my older brother's paper NY license. I went to a bar called "My Father's Place" on Long Island near where I grew up. I was 16 but had my brother's 18 license. It just occurred to me that the drinking age went from 18 to 21 when the last of the Boomers turned 18. Not sure why or if coincidence or design, but it was around 1982 that the drinking age nationwide went to 21 because of the threat to take away highway funds if the state did not make the change.

"So, surrender to sleep at last."
I just got reminded from one of my children that about 20 years ago I thought that Starbucks would go bankrupt. Do you know how many cups of overpriced, terrible, and weirdly named coffee they have to sell to support the real estate on every corner of NYC? Can't be done is what I said. I may have been early, but I stand behind that assessment.

Which animals cause the most deaths in Australia? Horses
Deer are everywhere around here. I have lived in this area for 25 years. Everyone has a deer and vehicle story. Sadly they never end well for the deer, the vehicle and too often the driver. My story is slightly unusual. I have a motorcycle riding friend who needed to take his bike into the shop. Naturally he was "friends with a guy" who was 20 miles away down the Sprain Brook Parkway. TikTok... DOOM!
In the United States, if the gubmint wants to get data from a social media company, it either needs a warrant or subpoena, generally for some very limited people, time, and/or issue. Or, the cooperation of the social media company.

With TikTok, the CCP owns part of the company and can access whatever data or all of the data any time it wants.

Here in the US, the law theoretically protects your privacy.

Having said that, I… [more]

Supreme Court rules states cannot remove Trump from ballot
How many hours before someone in the current Republican Congress tries to remove Biden from the ballot?

I don't think the Republicans want to remove Biden from the ballot. Biden seems to be the best chance they have of winning. Trump cannot beat a moderate, coherent (younger) democrat. Look at the weekend's NYT polls. Why would the republicans want to remove Biden based on that? I know there is a lot of turf left between now and November, but… [more]

Billy Joel's first new song in 17 years
North shore of LI boy here. Seen Billy in the 80s many a time. Really enjoy his catalogue including Fire. This song? Hmm. I like the poetry. The music not so much. First, what's with the southern twang of his voice trying to rhyme? Is that autotune gone wrong? Not sure. I get that it is not a pop song, but there is no hook or no sung line that I would want to sing along with. Interesting. We’re going to end up with a system soon in which college athletes have more freedom of movement, etc, than professional athletes do.

My children learned to gesture before they spoke more than Dadada or momma. For example, they would hold both hands up when they wanted to be picked up.
