One of my best friend's growing up (and to this day) was one of nine kids in his family. Nine kids in TEN years! Anyway, I was always included in dinner with the caveat that I take whatever I want on the first pass bc there was likely to not be a second pass. I would stop by and even if my friend was not there, I would be included in dinner.

Another friend's family always had spaghettis and meatballs on Wednesday (Prince spaghetti day!) and I would make it a point… [more]

MetaFilter's own(er)!
I try to channel jessamyn when I am working with older relatives on technology. My gf tries to get her 85 yo father to do complicated things on his phone, syncing between devices, casting, etc. He gets really frustrated with her. "I just want to watch this baseball game". I try to be gentle with gf when telling her to stop with the apps and whatnot. I just typed out some step by step directions on how to use his MLB app on his smart TV. 6 steps. From Turn On the TV to open a… [more]

RIP Ray Liotta, 1954-2022
I worked on a “ Crimes of the Century” doc about the Lufthansa heist, and we interviewed the real Henry Hill, and we all then went out to dinner with Ray Liotta who graciously picked up the tab.

That IS gracious of Ray Liotta. Seems to me that Henry Hill with all the stolen money should have picked up that tab. With small unmarked bills.

Loved this interview with Dan Patrick recorded last year.

Farewell Traitors; Hello Liberty et al
I have a son who was stationed at Benning. Was in Columbus not too many months ago. I asked him yesterday about the suggested change. He said call it Ft Moore or whatever they want meaning he supports the change.

Hal Moore and his wife Julia Moore are very deserving. (pdf) The movie based on the book, We Were Soldiers Once and Young was partially filmed there. My son took me down the streets where Julia Moore took it upon herself to be the one who informed the… [more]

What The Hell Happened To The LA Marathon?
If a cabal of monopolists has to kick you out for being too greedy, it’s safe to say you’re a fucker.

No love lost for Frank McCourt.

One, I Love This Game and Two, I Want to Continue Playing It
She is an inspiration to not just young girls, but to all including this old man who used to dream of playing in the big leagues. She has that 80 plus attitude. There are a lot of people with a lot of talent that don't work hard. Very few like Kelsie Whitmore who work as hard as she does. I need to get a FerryHawks jersey with her number on it.

Bob Neuwirth, born June 20th, 1939; died May 18th, 2022
I happen to know Bebe Neuwirth's family (and her). She is doing well. That is, she is not dead.

I always wondered who the two people in the background of Subterranean Blues video were. I cannot belief I did not recognize Allan Ginsberg and Bob Neuwirth.

The Diablo Sandwich
Love this movie. It was playing on one of the cable services (showtime?) recently. The mini ensemble cast has something for everyone. Burt Reynolds, the literal poster boy and Playgirl pinup , a young Sally Field (although older than the Flying Nun Sally) and the Original "The Great One", Jackie Gleeson. (Gretzky is Great, but not The Great One in my book.) My favorite is Jackie Gleeson. I used to watch his variety show on I think Saturday nights with the June Taylor dancers. My… [more]

It never occurred to me that there would be a Wikipedia article on a children's book about Grover. Full disclosure: My favorite Muppet is Grouch for obvious reasons that work.

Even more surprising is that I am now discussing the merits of this Wikipedia article and Wikipedia editing in general.

Why CVS Receipts Are Intentionally, Ridiculously Long - [SYTL 8 mins]
I get the 40% off coupon every week although it stopped for a while in January, February and March. They're back. I use them for big ticket items or to try out one of those "As Seen on TV" items. Getting that $20 item for $12 seems like an even better deal. The one that cooks 4 eggs in the microwave that is shaped like a big egg, totally worth it.

What kills me about CVS is that their pharmacy shuts down from 1:30 to 2:00 for lunch. I do not begrudge… [more]

And if there are 30 minutes worth of people in line at 1:30, then what?

Point well taken. My solution would be to tell the last person in line say at 1:15 or some time based on the number of people on line, that they are they last person before the break. So, if I showed up at 1:20 thinking I beat the deadline, I might be told THEN, not after waiting 10 more minutes that based on the number of customers and the average time of transaction, I will… [more]

Military Mulls Massive Recruiting Plan to Enlist College Athletes
My son got an ROTC scholarship and is serving now. It was great. For me. Before he signed, and we were so proud, I told him that I get the benefit (did not have to pay for college) and he got the obligation (4 years). He said that no, he got what he wanted which was to join the Army as an officer. He has a pretty typical college experience except getting up at 5am to run and having to piss in a bottle every few weeks. Drug tests smooth out the college experience. Guy Lafleur: "Aren't you the best?"
I knew a guy a few decades ago who spent a cup of coffee in the NHL. One, maybe two seasons. I asked him what his highlight of his career was. Without hesitation he had two. One, was the only goal he scored on Chico Resch of the Islanders. The other was meeting Guy LaFleur.

Losing Bossy and Lafleur in the same few weeks is a huge blow to hockey fans everywhere.

“Sure, everything is ending," Jules said, "but not yet.”
I am tubing down the Delaware River circa 1980 when I float up next to a friend. Mind you we had been drinking and smoking most of the day. I asked him if he knew what time it was. He responded, "No man. You want to reach a point where time does not matter. I am there. You need to get there." He was right you know. Still seeking time enlightenment.

As for the last time I was sitting in my chair trying to stay awake to the Three Stooges, it has been 2 days and 20 hours.

Elon Musk wants to buy Twitter
Interestingly, TWTR hired Goldman Sachs to advise why this bid of $54.20 is too low when GS has a sell rating on the stock and a $30 price target. If this is about shareholder value which is what a public company is about, then they should take the money and run.

As for financing it, what is the difference if he actually sells some TSLA stock or borrows against it? Almost every founder/CEO type borrows against their stock or options. Two reasons. One it still gives… [more]

I am somewhat of a free speech absolutist, but I concede that the biggest problem is not censorship itself on a private platform, it is who decides what should be censored or not is the issue. There are certain things that I think almost everyone would agree should be censored such as some QAnon stuff, some Antifa stuff, Obama is an alien type stuff, the pizza parlor story, etc. Look at the Hunter Biden laptop story. Censored because it was supposedly false and Russian plant. Turns out that… [more]

tell me you're a free speech absolutist and I know enough

you're either a teenager (you will grow out of it), or you're deluded, or you are of the wealth class who benefits from this absolute bullshit

all things are not equal.. who owns the media, who decides what speech gets amplified? these are things any discerning 17-year-old can figure out very quickly.

Isn't that the argument to hear all information? Anyone can figure it out for themselves what is right or wrong.

I don't know what is on the laptop nor do I really care. I just know that TWTR blocked the NY Post from Tweeting about it and now a year+ later the NY TImes and the WAPO confirm that whatever the NYP said about the lapptop was accurate.

On the one hand, I am glad this is a sort of low key ho-hum moment. On the other hand, why isn't a bigger deal made of this moment?

Sports and coaching has always been an "old boys network". The problem with all runners advance on a walk rule is that the umpiring of balls and strikes is still very subjective. The umpire can have an even greater impact on the outcome when the goal should be to eliminate the umpires influence on the outcome. That is not to say I favor the robo ump calling balls and strikes, I like that each umpire has their own strike zone, but blown calls should not change the outcome.
