How to be hospitable & respectful with a houseguest's religion?
OP, if you come across this I'm curious how it all worked out and what other accommodations turned out to be useful.

General anesthesia: Should I?
I chatted with the anesthesiologist on the phone but the topic of diabetes did not come up, which is part of why I’m suspecting what I find online is overblown.

Thanks everyone. I decided this whole thing was stressing me out too much so I canceled tomorrow’s appointment and will be doing an Open MRI. (it also helped that I found one in town).

For the record, the reason for the general anesthesia was that even with sedation I had to bail out on an MRI in a normal sized machine. It caught me off guard, as I had one years ago with some sedation and no problems.

House cleaner - are my expectations too high?
I would expect clean-up of everything on the outside of the stove.

My current maid uses a mop. If she used a wet swiffer I’d be just as happy. I don’t think it would be unreasonable to ask your house cleaner to switch though.

Maintaining composure in face of an extremely beautiful person.
Michelangelo didn't create David or Rodin his nudes as early pornography. It has been well understood by artists throughout history that humans can be exceedingly beautiful and many have spent their entire careers trying to capture that.

So talking to a distractingly beautiful person can be as if you were admiring a work of art and suddenly it came to life and started talking to you. Suddenly there is a person there, with their own history and complications and… [more]

Help Me Randomly Divide A Group
Just for clarity, what does the poll have to do with any of this? Why aren’t you just splitting the 80 people into four random groups? Are you trying to make sure that if there are only four Ringo fans they each end up in a separate group?

How as an Old, accept that your parents didn't love you
I just feel ridiculous as an old childless beesh still crying about my shitty parents

Okay, this is very important: Everyone is fighting their own hardest battle, and everyone deserves help with it.

Also, it is very common for parental issues to pop up even more as we get older. Age brings perspective and “WTF were they thinking?“ starts to be a common refrain.

when so many parents were SO… [more]

How to be a less nervous traveller
I have to say as I’ve gotten older travel has become less of an adventure and more of a pain in the ass. I like to actually be places, but the process of getting there is really tiresome. I think the excitement used to offset the annoyances.

The sleep stuff seems like it may be age related though. I don’t know about you, but at some point sleep became a real priority in my life. Getting shorted on sleep didn’t used to affect me a lot, but these days I really feel it.

But remember: most things, you can buy a replacement for. I have almost never had to do that, but it comforts me to know I could if I had to.

My basic travel kit is a passport and a credit card. Those are the only absolute musts, and the only things I fanatically keep track of. I mean, I’m not sloppy with everything else but as long as I’ve got those two I know I am okay.

Potential new job, observation in old school
It’s so weird that it may be a trap. If you agreed to have a stranger come into your class to observe — particularly without the knowledge of the administration — I would question your judgment.

skinny legs and all
I'll bet you guys never heard about Catherine the Great and the horse either. :-)

The Greek philosopher and mathematician Euclid had a penis that remained sadly flaccid. This might explain his fascination with optics and physical mechanics. A fragment of his ancient writings concerns circles described at the end of a moving lever. Many researchers agree that having successfully finished his treatise on conic sections, Euclid attempted, using the sheer power of his… [more]

Huh, I had never heard of this one but it might be what Robbins was referencing:
Euclides
Euclides is a smart, respectful, sexy, stunning, outgoing, fun, he also has a big penis, there's just so many good ways to describe Euclides. The name Euclides originated from the Greek Mathematician "Euclid" who came up with Euclidean Geometry [...]

Very possible. Perhaps 24 people named Euclides liked it. Or it's actually a thing in some obscure place that Robbins happens to know of. You can never tell with him.

The 'moving lever' thing was passed around in college in the same discussions as Catherine the Great, so I'd say that's better guess.

History of Japan from an anti-imperial decolonial perspective
I don’t know that this is directly on target, but you may be interested in the history of Dejima, which formed a very early chapter in Japan’s relationship with the West. For 220 years it was the only official contact point between Japan and Europe. A bulwark against cultural imperialism, if you will.

A modern microchip has features on the order of 50 nanometers in width, or around 1/2000th the width of a human hair. Materials are placed in layers a few atoms thin. Creating objects this small requires ultra-precise manufacturing equipment, and a production environment that can screen out as many sources of interference as possible; every rogue speck of dust or tiny fluctuation in electrical voltage. And these conditions must be maintained not in the rarefied conditions of an experimental lab,… [more]

The thing is, I don't want to hear about it if he fools around with someone else,

If it's something you expect your partner to actively hide from you then I think you may have wandered into an unhealthy place.

Is the software industry seeing a fundamental shift?
I don't think software is in a recession, but talking to friends who are still working it sounds like the pendulum has swung towards offshoring again.

A number of years from now someone will realize that the problems of managing all of these teams (and the fact that they hate getting up at 3AM to talk to them) could be solved by bringing it all into a single local concern. And a number of years after that...

I think I went through this cycle 4… [more]

Should I work in the cryptocurrency industry?
Speaking as someone who has worked at bleeding-edge companies the biggest issue is that every time your badge doesn't work on the first attempt you'll wonder if the company is still in business. The crypto market is growing extremely rapidly and if the history of business has shown anything there are going to be a few huge winners, a smaller number of survivors, and a enormous number of losers. Even if you're at a larger company where crypto is just a division be ready for sudden job loss.… [more]

Work relationships: this isn't just about a parking space, is it?
This leads to a lot of informal communication because we are so small. We all each lunch together almost every day.

You don't talk about your other interactions with Laura. In a group that small it seems likely there would be other visible signs of conflict rather than just your spot.

Sex offender being creepy but not breaking the law, what to do?
Having it be obvious that he is being recorded will likely be enough, but if it continues after that he almost certainly has a parole officer that you can get in direct contact with.

I have sympathy with regards to the excessive limitations on living spaces for sex offenders, but if they are in any way acting out then that goes right out the window. Run him out of town, and if you want to do a real public service press to get him returned to incarceration.

Is there any way some of the kindergarteners Dads could show up on a regular basis? Not to do anything -- I'm not suggesting vigilantism or violence -- I just think a sex offender would likely be a lot less bold in the face of a man standing there.

A few years ago I suggested bringing a man (me) into the situation for a guy who was standing in front of the house flashing himself. My aunt laid into me for my regressive approach; instead she and my… [more]

How do the Moon and Jupiter protect the Earth from meteorites?
I'm pretty sure kbanas has got it. If things are being flung in random directions then the possibility of hitting Earth is pretty low.

Sure, but if things are flying randomly through space then the possibility of them hitting the Earth is also pretty low. The question is if Jupiter's involvement makes it even lower.

But comets aren’t randomly flying through space. Due to their highly eccentric orbits they spend half of their lives headed directly for the inner system.

In any case, I am really over my head here so I will leave it to the experts.

Mourning(?) one who contained multitudes
Just a quick note from the other side.

While my older brothers and sister were growing up they dealt with an angry, judgmental, rigid man who left quite a bit of scarring. At the same time, like your father, he was widely admired in the community. I dealt with that when I was very young, but at a certain point he turned it around and I got a more settled, loving and caring father.

My experience does not invalidate theirs in any way, and I fully… [more]

Taylor Swift. I know *nothing* of her music. Start me out folkie maybe?
Male, 54.

I've been a fan of two of her albums for years now. Her early country stuff isn't that interesting to me, but "1989" and "Reputation" hit the spot for me in two very different ways.

I think one key is that she does put out albums. They are not random collections of songs, and while they are not necessarily themed it is not hard to see the style the connects the tracks. If you're going to try to connect with her… [more]

In the larger context of describing what your experience of Taylor Swift so far is it doesn’t seem like an unreasonable observation. The public image that she and her managers have decided on is decidedly manufactured. I don’t expect a plastic doll to produce deeply human and soulful lyrics.

I’m really unclear on the concept that the OP been working with someone for four years with no problems, then one day they say some awkward and annoying and that’s it, time to run.

This isn’t a work of fiction. The villain doesn’t hide their secret agenda for four years and then one day reveal themselves. People do not present themselves one way for 1459 days and then we only learn the dark truth on day 1460. It makes a great villain reveal in the last chapter, but… [more]

Is anything worth a long commute?
What would make a long commute worth it to you?

A job I would enjoy for a few years.

I have to say that my best long commute was with a carpool. Being able to use the HOV lanes didn't save all that much time, but zipping along with my companions past all those other poor suckers had a certain pleasure to it. Being in a carpool also forces you (and gives you a good excuse) to keep a handle on your work hours.

First and foremost is always being pleasant with the people you interact with. Sometimes that means politely saying no. The polite part goes along way.

Second is always giving accurate estimates for when tasks will be finished. People may not like it when you tell them it will be later than they want, but you must be a reliable point in their plans.
