Should I eat this?
How could an unplugged freezer raise the temperature of its contents above the ambient temperature outside it? Where would that heat have come from?

What To Do With This Cat
He actually loves going to the garage and will throughout the day sit by the door and meow until I let him in there. At night he happily runs in when I say "time for bed!" There's a lot for him to do out there - from chasing bugs to exploring to hunting critters.

Call me crazy, but… maybe he should just live in the garage for the short term while you figure this out. It sounds like he might be much happier that way, and meanwhile you can explore options like meds etc.

I like Crusader Kings 3. What other games might I like?
You should definitely check out Civ - VI if your computer can run it, V if it can’t. Not dissimilar to CKIII but with a much longer timescale and more abstraction (eg you only have one leader for thousands of years). It’s got that exact same vibe of “endlessly complex if you want, but minmaxing isn’t actually required to win,” and the dozens of playable civs with interesting unique playstyles keep it fresh. I don’t want to admit how many hundreds of hours of Civ VI I played during my extended… [more]

What plants should I put on my deck? (Difficulty level: Chicago)
I’m a container gardener in NYC, so slightly milder but still pretty harsh, and I concur that your best results will probably come from annuals, self-seeding perennials, or plants/bulbs you bring indoors in the winter. However I also want to point out that you can totally grow some tropical plants in the summer in Chicago! For example I’ve had great success with growing ginger plants from grocery-store-bought rhizomes here in New York - they thrive in the late-summer heat and humidity that many… [more]

Pretty sure my friend is spying on me
And I'm pretty sure, as I know her well, that she will either deny out of embarrassment or she will admit and again feel really embarrassed and bad, and we'll put it behind us BUT it will create awkwardness for a while - which does make me slightly hesitant, hence being curious to know how others would approach this.

Regarding this particular thing, I think embarrassment can be healthy sometimes! It’s one of the ways humans learn what is and isn’t… [more]

Geographically ambiguous names, like Lee
Similarly, 박 is not actually "Park" (there's no "r" sound in the name).

IIRC it’s spelled that way because English people established the spelling of the Korean name in roman characters, and English people (or at least, those with certain accents) don’t pronounce the R in park.

Send me your historical gays
Much of what I assumed would be coded (his attractions to young men) seemed pretty openly stated.

This was what I found so stunning about Hill House as well. It seems like there are a lot of cases where mainstream readers were so unwilling or unable to contemplate the idea of homosexuality that they HAD to interpret it as “very close platonic friends” even when doing so makes the narrative make way less sense (at least to my modern gay self).… [more]

They had had to find a way to talk about this in other languages.
"Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den" (Chinese: 施氏食獅史; pinyin: Shī-shì shí shī shǐ) is a short narrative poem written in Classical Chinese that is composed of about 94 characters (depending on the specific version) in which every word is pronounced shi ([ʂɻ̩]) when read in present-day Standard Mandarin, with only the tones differing.

Wallflower
I also think it looks like painted paper. Specifically I'd guess watercolor - look at how the blue and pink bleed into each other at the bottom - and possibly it's all one piece that was cut prior to being painted. That I'm less sure about, but the intersections where the leaves meet the stem also have a little bleeding.

My kid did something cruel to other kids and I am struggling with it
Elementary-aged kids are KIDS, and one of the ways they learn things are inappropriate is by testing the limits. That is normal kid behavior. It sounds like you think this is step one to your kid turning into a monster. I would gently suggest that picking up on that vibe from you is not going to be good for him.

Look, I got suspended from kindergarten three times for hitting other kids. I grew up to be a smart cool normal person who does not rob banks or commit murders.… [more]

What is a different term for the idea of a "spirit animal"
There are some good suggestions above for sure. But I’d also ask yourself what you’re trying to express when you say it, because sometimes stock phrases like that one become just verbal placeholders or tics, Things You Say, without much actual meaning behind them. Even if the phrase “spirit animal” was totally unproblematic, in what situations would you actually NEED to say it?

Stop my emails landing in junk/spam folders
In addition to the above: at work (where I manage the public contact inbox) I will sometimes get emails from normally trusted domains sent to spam if the sender embedded multiple links in the body of the email. That seems to be the common factor when people call us up asking why we never responded to them.

Can't remember tv show with magic fish...
This is kind of a curveball, but could it have been Star Trek: Deep Space Nine? There’s a species of symbiotic sluglike things that can be implanted in people and basically become one with them. They live in underground cave pools and are tended to by a caretaker, and there’s a scene where someone steps into the pool and kinda communes with them.

Should I feel guilty about my sister’s wedding 5 years ago?
My current therapist almost seems to be on my sisters side, she always just says to try seeing things from my sisters perspective.

I don’t think it necessarily means what you think it does when your therapist says it. Saying “try to see things from this person’s perspective” doesn’t always mean “this person is right and you’re wrong,” it can also mean “because of who this person is, their perspective is inherently limited and very different from… [more]

Nooo don’t do something gimmicky like addressing it to the CEO, a person who is extremely likely to never set eyes on the thing. Don’t pick a specific name at all. To me it doesn’t say “oo gumption this person checked the website!”, it’s just weird and also inaccurate because almost always, multiple people will screen resumes, not just a single manager. I can’t believe you guys haven’t ever heard “following guest”. It’s literally everywhere in New York and I guess I assumed it was universal. It’s so common that I never even thought to wonder about it until this post.

I especially notice it in places where there are more registers than lines, like a Trader Joe’s. In a place like that there’s a lot of background noise, and I’m wondering if that’s related - it’s a phrase that would be hard to mistake for anything else.

I don’t know if I forgot what periods were like before I got it, or if they got worse over time while I had it, but since taking it out I’ve barely even had a cramp. Have I reached the limits of my ability to be effective in my job?
It sounds like the clients are not going to change no matter what you do, so I think your choices are either 1. The department starts accepting things in the incorrect format and fixing them for the clients as part of your normal workflow, or 2. You find a way to become less emotionally invested in these clients’ incompetence. Honestly, method 1 sounds much easier to achieve. All this time you guys spend trying and failing to educate the clients might be far better and more efficiently spent… [more]

Have you SUCCESFULLY reduced your screen time? How did you do it?
You need an actual plan for what you will be doing instead of scrolling. If this is something that’s taken up a lot of your time for years and years, it’s not like you’re just gonna drop your screens and immediately know what you’re going to do with that time.

So instead of, “I want to reduce screen time,” think about it like “here are all the things I’m going to do instead of being on the computer.” Then it’s not like you’re depriving yourself, you’re just adding something.

I keep some bars at my desk that are nothing but ground up nuts and dates, they are great for this problem. That’s been my general solution for this - just to find a couple things I can stand to eat over and over and keep a whole bunch of them around. Then I don’t have to actively think about it.

With some medications this would be dangerous. If it’s meant to be slow release and you don’t reseal the capsule properly and it all gets into your system at once, that’s not good.

Modern Mystery School
In general, if some people didn’t get some sense of meaning out of cults and MLMs, then cults and MLMs would not exist. I’m not seeing any conflicting information in this question. This friend of a friend can genuinely feel it’s helped them; that doesn’t make it not a cult.
