How to store some stuff for a couple hours in downtown Toronto
I have an appointment in downtown Toronto next week, and for security reasons I can't bring my phone, a backpack or other bag larger than a small purse, any food, etc. I am coming on the train from out of town with a six-year-old child, and I would like to try to find a way to store some belongings for a couple of hours.

USPS Begins Postal Banking Pilot Program
“Offering new products and services that are affordable, convenient and secure aligns with the Postal Service’s Delivering for America 10-year plan to achieve financial sustainability and service excellence,” said USPS spokesperson [Tatiana] Roy in a statement to the Prospect. “This pilot, which is in collaboration with the American Postal Workers Union (APWU), is an example of how the Postal Service is leveraging its vast retail footprint and resources to innovate.” Executive editor David Dayen writes 1800 words for The American Prospect.

Five Tropes Local TV News Uses to Dehumanize Homeless People
"Rightwing demagogues like Tucker Carlson incite against the homeless on a nightly basis, but mainline outlets also help stigmatize the unhoused, only with more subtlety." Political writer Adam Johnson shines a light on 5 tropes commonly used to dehumanize the unhoused in mainstream news (with receipts).

The Summer of Sparks
Is 2021 the year that the world finally catches up with Sparks, the weirdly wonderful, inventive, cheeky, and genre-spanning pop band formed by brothers Ron and Russell Mael in 1967? All signs point to yes. The Sparks Brothers, a new documentary by Edgar Wright, has been released to strongly favorable reviews (NY Times; LA Times; Rotten Tomatoes). And the musical film Annette — starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, with songs and screenplay written by the Mael brothers — will debut at Cannes on July 6, with a U.S. release later this summer.
Portable reminder gadget (smartwatch?) recommendations?
I deal with WFH but pottering away from my laptop by setting iPhone alarms so I can arrive at, wrap up, and end my meetings (3-8 nonrecurring meetings/day, 1-4 alarms per meeting to help me facilitate others + protect my time, custom text reminding me alarm's pupose). I need something lighter than my phone + easier to setup. Is there a smartwatch (or other gadget: I only want this one feature and dislike having surveillance/text/calls/web/apps) that can do this for me?

Podcasts similar to CBC's Ideas
I'm looking for a few podcasts that are similar to Ideas, is there anything you'd suggest. The CBC describes Ideas as "deep-dive into contemporary thought and intellectual history. Anchored in a powerful legacy and expansive archive spanning over five decades, its topics are boundless. The nature of consciousness. The history of toilets. The roots and rise of authoritarianism. Near death experiences. No idea is off-limits."
Maybe its better if they kept their mask on... movie edition
Help me find scenes/clips from films and TV shows of people removing masks to reveal something monstrous underneath. Phantom of the Opera's reveal, the climax of Twilight Zone's Eye of the Beholder, Twisty from American Horror Story pulling off his creepy face mask... etc.
Cheap cell numbers for annoyance validations?
A Discord I occasionally post in is now saying "I must verify my identity by phone before you can send messages in this server." It won't accept my VoIP phone (even though it can accept text messages). Is there any very low-cost way I can get a forward-only "cell phone number" to manage a rapidly growing number of companies I don't want to give my phone number to, but still want to use?

"Scented candles: An unexpected victim of the COVID-19 pandemic"
On Twitter, Terri Nelson noted the proliferation of complaints on Yankee Candle's website about the lack of scent in their scented candles. Kate Petrova responded (Threadreader version) with a tweet thread analyzing Amazon reviews for scented candles before and during the pandemic, and the results are interesting (and very easy to understand).

"I find myself saying to believers, “I don’t know if you’re right or wrong, but if you were right, I would expect the following to happen,” referring to any number of established conspiracies whose unmasking all followed a similar pattern. My goal is usually to press the believer’s own recognition of internal contradictions so that the belief itself gets harder to sustain."

This Is the Day...This Is the Hour...This Is Pop Will Eat Itself!
About 30 yeas ago, self-identified "grebo" rockers (Guardian; previously) fused ramshackle punk, folk, electronic and hip-hop, plus some rave piano into the unofficial theme for the 1990 FIFA World Cup (Wiki), titled "Touched By the Hand of Cicciolina" (YT). Pop Will Eat Itself, or PWEI, included a card with some singles (Discogs) for folks to petition FIFA that the World Cup should be presented by Cicciolina, the Hungarian-Italian porn star turned politician (Daily Kos). OK, we've touched on some of this previously, so let's (re)visit the rest of the Poppies' videography!
