Rom-ads of the Three Kingdoms

The concept of McDonaldland (huge playlist, notable compilation from same) has a prominent place in public consciousness. Less well known is its rival, the Burger King Kingdom (compilation video). But before the current Jack-in-the-Verse (playlist) or even the Jack Pack, there was the Jack in the Box Bunch. (Two ads and three flexidisc-records-with-comics. Alt. vid of last one. And yes, at least those last three are voiced by Paul Winchell, Disney's original voice of Pooh and Tigger.)

Transition Team initial discussion summary and kickoff

I've had an initial discussion with several folks in the MetaFilter community about planning the next steps in building the community management and engagement structure necessary for the long-term health of the site. I'd like to report on who I've talked with, what we've talked about, and some of the core questions and ideas that came up in that discussion of what we're now calling a temporary Transition Team. This is the start of a process that I expect will actively involve the whole MetaFilter community in new and constructive ways, and I’m excited about that.

Movie: Hot Rod

For Rod Kimball, performing stunts is a way of life, even though he is rather accident-prone. Poor Rod cannot even get any respect from his stepfather, Frank, who beats him up in weekly sparring matches. When Frank falls ill, Rod devises his most outrageous stunt yet to raise money for Frank's operation -- and then Rod will kick Frank's butt.

What has it really been like owning an electric vehicle?

What has your experience been like with your electric vehicle?
  • Do you like owning it?
  • Do you get range anxiety?
  • Ever take your EV on trips that require you to recharge before you reach your destination?
  • How do you recharge it at home?
  • Do you have a level 2 charger?
  • Is there anything I should consider when thinking of getting an EV?

Am I walking across an endless plateau?

I’ve used a treadmill desk in my home office since August 2021, and I walk 4-8 miles per weekday (about 3-5 hours per day). Despite having done this for almost 8 months, my legs and ankles still get tired at the end of the day, and by Friday afternoon I feel pretty creaky. I thought I would be in better shape by now, or at least able to walk for steadily increasing distances. Instead, I’ve plateaued around 30 miles per week. Is this normal? What can I do to feel less tired and sore?

Welcome To Year Zero

Nine Inch Nails' 2007 album Year Zero foretold of a dystopian future, set in 15 years in the future, 2022, where the Religious Right was taking over the country, terrorism inspired mass surveillance, drugs for population control were in the water, and something from beyond the planet is trying to reach out with a message. But let's not start with the music... let's start with the plot [Reddit, top answer has a very good synopsis of the setting and storyline].

This is the best __________ I know of....

What are your favorite mundane items? I want to own the best box cutter, oven mitts, key ring, wallet, dog collar and lead, notebook, pen, reusable shopping bag, bed sheets, sponge, dish washing brush, lint remover, and _______ on the planet. What's something you own that's amazing and you think everyone should own? Price is no object — what's a thing you bought and never want (or need) to switch to another?

Looking for interesting, conversation-provoking would you rathers

Long story short, I'm going to be in a group setting soon where I'd like to use would-you-rather questions to start an interesting discussion. A lot of would-you-rathers I've found are negative (e.g. about choosing between two bad outcomes) rather than positive, and I would prefer mostly positive ones. Grounded and thought-provoking are better than absurd and ridiculous.

Blame It on the Stardust: A Star Trek Vid Album

Over the last three years, beatriceeagle has made fifteen fanvids celebrating, critiquing, and reflecting on Star Trek -- one vid for each song in the album Rainbow by Kesha (formerly Ke$ha). The playlist on YouTube has 14 videos and AO3 links to a fifteenth bonus track. Standouts include "Don't Let the Bastards Get You Down": "A vid for the underserved and screwed-over characters of Star Trek", and "Praying": "Some things only God can forgive. (Kira and Dukat)". "Praying" previously on MeFi.

I've just discovered these via Langridge's HotelFred website, which lets you read them free online or download them if you have the right app. The first two titles listed are mini-comics (about weight loss and witches respectively), then there's The Iron Duchess (featuring Fred the Clown), The Thirteenth Floor (an early graphic novel project) and The Great McGonagall (chapters to date of his book about the world's worst poet).

A Long Bet Pays Off

Cool news from Archive.org:
11 years ago, on the site longbets.org, a friendly wager was made between two mavens of the web: Jeremy Keith and Matthew Haughey. The bet, to be revisited a decade and a year later, would be whether the URL of their wager at Long Bets would survive to a point in the semi-distant future. That is, this day, February 22nd, 2022, (2/22/2222).

As of this writing, the URL absolutely has survived.

The Black Falconer

Rodney Stotts was looking to get a short-term "on the books" job so he'd have the paystubs he needed to convince landlords to rent him his own apartment, where he could more comfortably expand his real line of work--as a mid-level drug dealer in Southeast DC. The first employer who called him back was Earth Conservation Corps, an environmetal group focused on cleaning up the Anacostia River. There began Stotts' journey from drug dealing and prison to environmentalist and master falconer--perhaps unique among "escape from life on the streets" accounts.

A peek into Montréal's mastery of snow

Many cities in snowy climates have routines for keeping streets clear, typically shoving snow aside into piles that can grow and grow over the course of winter. Fewer cities have anything like Montréal’s well-choreographed snow removal operations (le déneigement), which clear sidewalks, bike paths, and streets by transporting and eliminating snow altogether.

Is it worth $2500 to learn Transcendental Meditation?

I am interested in meditation. I've read several books by authors including Pema Chodron and Wayne Dyer who speak of the benefits of meditation. I am also the sort of person who multi-tasks and can't sit still for very long (like more than 5 or 10 minutes). Today I went to an introductory lecture at the Washington, DC center for Transcendental Meditation. There was no hard sell but it costs $2500 to learn to do TM. For $2500 you get 4 instructional sessions and access to a lifetime of follow up sessions for free if you want them. This strikes me as a lot of money. The TM folks claim the benefits are priceless. Still the high price makes me wary. What if I don't like it or if it's not for me? It'll cost me $2500 just to try it. Are there any TM practitioners -- current or former -- who can let me know if TM is for real or if I should look elsewhere? And of I should look elsewhere, where might I look to start? I just want to explore meditation. I don't want a guru or a sect or a cult.

Search Party: Final Season

Dory and the gang seek enlightenment, funded by a Tech Dude played by Jeff Goldblum. As expected, things go haywire. In this final season they don't even try to make it believable, instead opting for metaphor, simile, parable, or something symbolic. Still not sure. That may have been the point.

Wordle: A daily word guessing game

Wordle is a daily word guessing game by artist, product manager, and engineer Josh Wardle. You have six tries to guess a five letter word. Each time, you get clues about the correct letters—if a letter is in the correct place, it turns green; if the letter is in the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow; if it’s not in the word at all, it turns grey. You can play it here. And if you want, you can post an obscured version of your results on Twitter (just coloured squares, no letters revealed so you don’t spoil it for others) via a share button that generates an emoji.

there are just marriages, made up of people

If that is not at all a unique type of marriage, in the history of marriages, it nevertheless is not What Marriages Are Like. If I believed that marriages were like that, that marriage, categorically, was just Like That—that a marriage was doomed to sadness and failure and guilt and dissolution—then I would never have gotten married in the first place. Thankfully, there are other types of marriages. There are good ones. Maybe your marriage just sucks. [via the Defector].

8th Annual MST Club Christmas Marathon Social Distancing II

Here we go again! It's our eighth year sending out a constant stream of riffing, Christmas specials, video weirdness and strange movies, from midnight the morning on December 23, all through the 24th, and all through Christmas Day, and slightly beyond. This is where it'll all go down. We're here if you need us, or want us, whether to use for fun background, to fill odd moments, to see really really strange things late at night, to escape from family, or to obsessively watch over long periods (as those of us running it tend to do). With Omicron running rampant and many families choosing to distance again this year, we hope to lighten what may be a second sad year apart. More info inside!

Winning as a first-time candidate

I've worked in politics for a long time and all the candidates that I've worked for in the past were always much older than me. They're in their fifties or sixties and they have much more established careers. And so when they call up a friend who is also a senior-level executive, and they ask, ‘Hey, can you cut me a check for $2,700 bucks?’ They're like, sure, I can do that. For me, I was calling my friends who were all younger and being like, can you chip in a hundred dollars? And can I call your mom? From a Q&A with Delegate-Elect Elect Irene Shin, Virginia House of Delegates in Campaigner, a new weekly newsletter exploring the tactics that drive winning political campaigns.

New Laws Are Forcing Employers to Share Salary Details With Applicants

Companies would rather exclude *entire states* from employment than list a salary range in a job posting Colorado’s pay transparency law, which has been in effect since January, is perhaps the most expansive and experimental of its kind. The transparency rules apply even to national companies who are hiring remotely. This stipulation initially caused national firms to exclude Colorado residents from their remote job openings earlier this year. For example, a remote listing from Realogy, a publicly-traded real estate firm, read: “This position can be performed anywhere except Colorado.” Dozens of other companies, including Nike, Johnson and Johnson, and IBM, used similar language in their listings after the law took effect.
