A straight flush of stable-pair-bonding qualities

The Feminist. From n+1 Issue 35, fiction by Tony Tulathimutte. "Now that he’s self-conscious, he realizes he can’t compete along conventional standards of height, weight, grip strength, whatever. How can he hope to attract anyone with his narrow shoulders?" via Carmen Maria Machado, who tweets: I want to teach this story in a horror class.

“As a matter of urgency, we need to move approximately 1000 hens,”

$1.50 for 1000 hens. “A man is desperate to re-home 1000 hens after he accidently bought them in an online auction for $1.50. Steve Morrow from Hamilton said he saw the "urgent sale" on Trade Me and thought he was bidding for only one bird. But when he won the auction at 11am on Sunday, he was told by the seller, Matthew Blomfield, that he had in fact bought 1000 of them. The ad read that a small free-range egg farm based in Massey, West Auckland, was closing down and needed to be vacated by Monday. [...] He said he put in an auto bid for $20, thinking he could at least get two hens. "When the auction closed, I thought 'this is great', I could take as many birds as I wanted," Morrow said. "But when I spoke to the man and he said it was for 1000 hens ... holy moly, I was stunned, I can tell you that." He said he had read the ad more than three times and admitted the "wording was confusing".”

“Press LT to prepare and RT to let loose.”

A Brief History of Peeing in Video Games [Slate] “Gamescom 2019 kicked off in Cologne, Germany on Monday night, and as usual, the annual trade fair has been full to bursting with announcements, trailers, and exciting new details about upcoming games. But one development is making a bigger splash than the rest: Visionary video game auteur Hideo Kojima’s next game, Death Stranding, will feature the kind of hyper-realistic urination gameplay action that gamers crave. Drench your eyeballs in this leaked footage from Gamescom’s opening night stream to see Death Stranding star Norman Reedus take the most lavishly digitized piss in video game history.” [Death Stranding - Extreme Peeing Action][YouTube]

We can't save the world, but we can protect and care for [RPG.net]

One of the oldest online RPG forums takes a stance: "We are banning support of Donald Trump or his administration on the RPGnet forums. [...] We can be welcoming to (for example) persons of every ethnicity who want to talk about games, or we can allow support for open white supremacy. Not both." spawning multiple discussions on other online communities like reddit, resetera, hacker news and twitter. Among the media coverage, Mashable has an unabashedly positive article about the decision and Vice's Motherboard reached out to the admins.

"pRoVen INnoCeNt"

Despite everything, Justice Kavanaugh was sworn in to the SCOTUS on the evening of Saturday, Oct 6, by Chief Justice John Roberts. The NY Times has reported evidence of tax fraud from the '70s and '80s; Donald Trump and his family evaded a tax bill that could have been as high as half a billion dollars. Trump is currently the President of the United States. Nikki Haley, ambassador to the U.N., has announced her resignation. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change produced a new report warning of warming by as much as 1.5°C as early as 2040. More shady shit around Trump's 2016 campaign is coming out.

The Story of Why I Left Riot Games

"So this is it. This is going to be the thing." That’s what I remember thinking as I left the room where I had just finished a conversation with two female mentees. I had wondered for some time when there would be an incident serious enough that I had to talk to leadership about unacceptable behavior in the workplace, and here it was.

"Collusion is not a legal term."

Your lede: President Trump today confessed that his son, son-in-law, and campaign chair met in June 2016 with Russian agents in hope of obtaining Russian intelligence to sway the 2016 election. Trump - who denies advance knowledge of the meeting - defends it as "totally legal."

What books or online courses would you recommend to get the basics of music theory down? What's music theory 101 that a reasonably smart person could digest in his spare time?

Best iPad handwritten note solution?

Behind every little fish is a great white lie

This week in Washington is all about testing limits.
Hope Hicks' testimony before the House Intelligence committee tested the limits of executive privilege.
Jared Kushner tested the limits of his provisional security clearance, and flunked.
Robert Mueller's investigation tested the limits set by Republicansby digging into Trump's business deals with Russians and his 2013 activities around the Miss Universe Pageant.
Meanwhile, Americans tested the limits of their prescriptions for anti-anxiety medications.

Philosophical texts for helping me not hate people I don't know?

Lately, when I reflect on the state of the world, I am not-infrequently overcome with hatred toward the large number of people in my country whom I perceive to be ruining things with their bad voting decisions. I want to not feel this hatred. Can you recommend specific readings or systems of thought to help me replace this feeling with something else? (Nothing that appeals to religious belief please, as I have none of that.) Thanks!

I saw my estranged father on the train & all I got was this lousy column

The New Statesman's Stephen Bush writes – “On the Tube, I saw the father I’d never met – and was happy to find that I had nothing to say to him. I looked at my feet and walked past the man who had no idea that I was his son.” More importantly, though – “He couldn’t know, close to 30 years ago, that the child he was walking out on would have the good fortune to be born into a country about to experience close to two decades of uninterrupted, low-inflation growth, most of that presided over by a Labour government firmly committed to improving the condition of the poor.”

And I'll go into people's houses at night and wreck up the place!

On Sunday, reports leaked of President Trump's plan to end DACA for hundreds of thousands of immigrants, with likely a six-month phase-in of the enforcement. Rebuking North Korea for their latest nuclear test, he also criticized South Korea for "appeasement" and on trade, and suggested he would cease trade with any country that continued to trade with the DPRK. Meanwhile, the Justice Department just admitted in court that Trump's much-disputed accusation that "Obama wiretapped Trump tower" was indeed false.

mathowie transfers ownership of MetaFilter to cortex

Big news: a few days ago Matt Haughey and I signed paperwork to transfer ownership of MetaFilter from him to me. This is sorta huge and sorta not a big deal at the same time: things are fine and basically nothing is changing on the site as a result, we’re just keeping on as before. I’ll talk about the whole thing below the fold.
