Exporting a Distribution List from Outlook to Excel
(duct tape and baling wire alert)

Create a new message to the DL
Expand the DL so that all the individual names are listed in the "To:" field
Copy them into Excel
They'll all be in one cell, so use "Text to Columns" with a semicolon delimeter
Select the whole thing, and copy>Paste Special>Transpose to get it all in one column.

If you're list has more than 16,384 names, you'll have to do it in chunks.

(also, I said this was duct-tapey)

speedless in seattle
Check out this, and the linked wiki article.

The naming conventions convey a lot of information, but you have to know how to decode it.

For example:

N.E. 45th and 45th N.E. - The compass designation in front of the name means that NE 45th is NE 45th Street, and runs East-West. The compass designation after the name means that 45th NE is 45th Avenue NE, and runs North-South.

In each case, the NE… [more]

SF book recommendations
Shelter, by Susan Palwick has some interesting extrapolated tech, along with information about future housing prices :-)

If longish short-stories are ok, then I highly recommend the Year's Best Science Fiction series. It's all recent, by some of the best writers out there.

And along those lines, Stories of Your Life, by Ted Chiang contains a wide variety different visions.

Light, by M. John Harrison is a challenging read, but also full of nifty ideas

Help me to be of good help!
I apologize ahead of time for tl;dr. Most of it is a slightly edited memail I sent to about a year ago to a mefite who was joining a DV program. At the end I'll put some links to resources that you might find useful.

I've volunteered for a good part of my adult life. When I was in Phoenix, I worked on a rape crisis hotline, I worked in a child crisis shelter, and then I settled in at a DV shelter. The shelter work was mostly just kitchen work, so I didn't really do any… [more]

Plan My Free Day in Seattle
A few things I'd suggest:

1) The Argosy cruise around Elliot Bay/Lake Union. Good opportunity to see a wide variety of things around the city, and the Ballard Locks are cool.

2) Food might be a little tricker, depending how mobile you are, how far you want to walk, etc. You aren't that far from Capitol Hill, specifically Poppy or Olivar (you can build your appetite climbing the hill). If you can get to the International District (which is… [more]

Friend sexually abused his girlfriends.
On preview, what fatbird said. I'll add that you might consider calling a rape crisis hotline and discussing these issues with them. They may have something useful to suggest, or at least talk to you about it from a place of experience. The national number is 1.800.656.HOPE. The ex might consider it as well.

How's the commute from Beacon Hill or Greenlake to downtown Seattle and Bellevue?
There's also the 316 from greenlake, a commuter bus that runs during rush hour, and I think is faster than the 16 and nicer than the 358.

You might also look at the University district and Northgate, they both have good bus options to both downtown and Bellevue (but are further out than either of the neighborhoods you mention).
posted to Ask MetaFilter by Gorgik at 7:26 AM on August 29, 2010
One more thing. You might consider living in Bellevue. The bus options to Seattle are pretty good, especially if you live close to I-90, and that would make the Bellevue commute a lot easier.

Can AutoHotKey close processes in Task Manager
You could dump the local admin password with this

In addition to what DrDracator says, modifying your computer might be violating appropriate use policies, which may get you in hot water with HR.

Why do I have nightmares every night?
You might see if your school has anyone who does sleep research, and ask them for advice.

One thing that helps me work through issues similar to yours was to try to understand the dreams I had. I'd suggest not looking at online "dream dictionaries", but actually try to find someone who knows something about dream interpretation. Working through them and understanding them may help both in terms of removing some of the fear, and reducing their intensity.… [more]

Hebrew music?
I don't know enough about music in Hebrew to match it to your specific tastes, but here are two recommendations that I grew up with that are great:

Hair, in Hebrew

Aquarius

No lie, I grew up listening to this, and the first time I heard the English version, it sounded very wrong.

And try to find Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in Hebrew.

Music that later makes you go, "Hey yeah, I never noticed that!"
Eleven by Primus is 11/4. Not particularly a popular song, though :-)

Mr. Brightside by The Killers is just one verse repeated twice. For some reason, I didn't get that for a while...

This Wikipedia article lists a bunch of songs (mostly not just pop/rock, but there are a number of Beatles songs)

Legal or logistical advice for Spanish domestic violence victim?
Apart from questions about asylum, shelter and the like, she should look into whether there are any options for hiding her identity when applying for housing, work, etc. It sounds like he's pretty adept at finding her, and stopping that from happening would help keep her more safe. There are some programs in the US that allow DV victims to apply for things while keeping their address secret.

At the far end of the spectrum would be changing her and her kid's names.

Asthmatics wanted: for anecdotes and advice.
I had chronic, severe Asthma from age 6-30, numerous emergency trips, hospitalized several times a year, a 14-month stint at an inpatient Asthma treatment center, almost died three times. Essentially symptom-free since I turned 30, 13 years ago.

Several things happened close together that turned it around.

Most affordable steroid nasal spray?
Whatever you get, see if you have a mail-order option. Mine gives me three months of meds for the price of two.

I use a steroid sinus rinse for nasal polyps. It's a compound and I can't get mail-order, and I get 6-8 weeks' worth for about $50.

Is having D&D stuff on my website bad for my image?
"So let's say you were looking to hire me"

If *I* were looking to hire you, it wouldn't make a difference to me, and in fact D&D might count in your favor. But it's going to depend on a lot of things, like industry, hiring manager, ETC. If you're applying for something technical, probably not a problem. I can imagine other industries/organizations that might look down on it, though. You could mitigate it by designing it well, to show off your… [more]

Prednisone Problems
Prednisone doses vary highly, and the length of time it takes to come off depend on what you're dealing with. The last time I had it (for asthma) it came in a "dose packs", which metered the pills out over 6-8 days. I think the 60-40-20 is pretty standard. Again, though, I think it depends on what you're taking it for. I think that prednisone for inflammation is typically done very quickly (sometimes even just a single injection). And I'd bet that desuetude is right, you're… [more]

1) If he's had physical access to your computer or house (or apartment), you can't trust the existing technology at that location.
