How as an Old, accept that your parents didn't love you
Not to sound all Darth Vader-y, but the turning point for me was allowing myself to be overtly angry at my parents for what my childhood was like. Two things facilitated that. First, I started learning about the nature of domestic violence. Second, I found a therapist who created a space in which I could explore and express that anger. The type of work we (my therapist and I) do is called internal family systems therapy. It's the first time I could ever talk about my anger, much less start… [more]

Have any science fiction stories been set in humanities departments?
Fool On The Hill by Matt Ruff is more speculative fiction/fantasy, but it's about a writer at Cornell.

Movies with very competent protagonists - difficulty level: no violence.
If competence can mean precision, creativity and skill, you might look at the documentary Rivers and Tides, about the artist Andy Goldsworthy. And it looks like there's a newer one as well, Leaning into the Wind. They are documentaries, though, not plot-driven stories.

It looks like Nasa is taking names for the next Mars mission, but I don't think there is a launch scheduled, this this is more for a future mission. It looks like they do this with most launches, so maybe try to get on a mailing list?

I can't find anything for the European Space Agency, but they must do something similar.

What should a smart high school kid learn in three weeks, and how?
For Excel, I've always liked Chandoo, and he has a course for ~$150 https://chandoo.org/wp/excel-school-program/

Whatever course they choose, please implore them to make part of their learning Power Query. It's a force multiplier for using Excel, and will give them a leg up if they are ever in a position to have to use Power BI.

Just to add, in Seattle, so freezing winters not necessarily guaranteed. And we can't figure out exactly where the wasps are getting in. There aren't a lot, just one or two a day or so. And they aren't bees.

Thanks for the feedback so far!

Struggling in my job and it's been noticed
Does anyone have any advice or techniques to deal with a dynamic, constantly moving role with daily deadlines?

I'm not sure what tools you have access to, but a spreadsheet of tasks is not a bad start. Some kind of calendaring system might also be a good idea.

If you have access to Microsoft Teams, they have an app called "Tasks by Planner" that combines checklists and due dates. There are a number of tutorials… [more]

Your favorite DVD commentary tracks?
Monty Python and the Holy Grail has two great commentary tracks. Gilliam and Jones do one, and Cleese, Idle and Palin do the other.

I also remember enjoying the Life of Brian commentary tracks.

Should my partner quit his job and stay at home?
I'm only going to speak to this "embarrassed at how people will react" part of your question, and going to assume that your partner is masculine presenting based on your word choices.

1) I have (had?) a male friend who did this. His wife is a obstetrician and made enough money that he didn't have to work, so he decided to "stay home" and take care of their two kids. He struggled with this issue, in particular being perceived as a "p*ssy"… [more]

Part of your question sounds like you want resources or research, which some people have mentioned above and which I don't have. But I can give you my perspective.

Atomic Breath vs Birthday Candles: A Godzilla Themed Birthday Party
In my head this works, not sure about implementation. Could you make hotdogs, but maybe decorate the buns like cars or trains and cut hotdogs into pieces and stand them up so they look like little people? I realize Godzilla didn't really eat people, and you might not want hot dogs thrown around the room, but...

What am I allergic to (Mexican restaurant edition)?
I think you're settling in on a path, but I will suggest that if you're eating iceberg lettuce, it might be sulfites. Most places don't use them anymore, but I'm sure some do, and salad stuff, especially lettuce, is a possible vector. Gardenia sometimes has it, and I've gotten reactions off of other pickled vegetables. Runny nose is the first thing I get.

Flat-top roof resurfacing estimate a little...high?
Thanks everyone. I think one of the factors was that as some pointed out a roof is different from a deck, and that only became clear to me the more I talked to contractors and read. I got two other estimates, and I got a similarly detailed/informed one that came in around 20k, depending on what they find when they pull up the existing membrane. I think we'll be going with that one.

Anyway, I appreciate everyone's perspective, it helped me not freak out.

Chatfilter: What words have you misread or missaid for a long time?
Y'alls honesty has allowed me to admit something: Until very recently, like this year, I didn't understand/clock/recognize that the name the of the band The Beatles wasn't a label describing them as bugs, but a sort of pun with the musical word "beat" in it.

Break my little brain with BOOKS!
Mefi favorite Riddley Walker puts you inside a character's head in a time and place in a way I've never experienced before, by narrating the story in a post-apocalyptic version of English.

I'd also suggest How To Be Both by Ali Smith, mentioned in the thread Knile linked.

Looking for Innovative Responses to Gender-Based Violence
Gender-based violence is predicated on the messages that boys and men get about their place in the world and how they should behave. I'd recommend looking into programs/activities/information that seek to educate/inform/unpack these messages (sometimes called "Men's Accountability"). Paul Kivel was part of a program called the Oakland Men's Project that created a number of tools and exercises that get at these issues, and you can find information at his Website (https://paulkivel.… [more]

My buddy Cooper, he has a lab?
I just (two days ago)had the same thing happen with a door to door pest control thing. He kept talking about my neighbor Susan, and the Garcias and the Vargases. He very deliberately mentioned each name twice.

I have no idea if those are legit names from the neighborhood, but it felt kind of creepy and very "tactic-y"

Abuse vs. harm/incompatibility/immaturity in relationships
In my experience as a volunteer domestic violence advocate, abuse is usually but not exclusively about a pattern of behavior where one person is trying to gain power and maintain control over another. You might look at https://www.thehotline.org/identify-abuse/power-and-control/. Your book might talk about the wheel, which is a good framing device for these issues.

I'm on ADHD medicine and I feel guilty
Why can't I be like this without meds? I don't have ADHD and can't speak for how the Ritalin works, although I have taken various forms of antidepressants during the course of my life. It might be that the drugs work because you have an organic issue that the meds correct. Current best mask options for the bearded
My beard is usually 1/8 - 1/2 inch long. I use these masks. I can't get ear loops to keep a seal, but these head straps are pretty good, and when I breath the mask's movement indicated air is being drawn in/pushed out through the mask. You could probably tie a loop in the straps to make it even tighter.

It's not going to be perfect, since the beard prevents a perfect seal, but this is as good as I've found.

crowdsourced medical advice: iron supplement edition.
Any chance you like (or can learn to like) liverwurst or braunschweiger? Both are super high in iron (like 30% of rda in 1 serving). That's what I used when I tried dietary sources.

There's also the Lucky Iron Fish, which is another way of adding dietary iron that might be easier than using cast iron pans.

App on MS Teams for recurring checklists?
Teams has a ...thing... called "Tasks by Planner" that lets you set up individual items that can be scheduled on a recurring basis, and inside each item you can set up a checklist. Individual items can be assigned to one or more people, but not individual checklist items.

And it sends out reminders to whoever is assigned to an item.

How bad is Seattle, really?
Downtown is different from other parts of the city. Mostly, I think, because of remote work. There are significantly fewer people commuting in to work, which means fewer office workers, and a lot of the businesses are struggling/closed. Having said that, there aren't encampments downtown the way there were last year. Maybe a tent or two in a few places, but I think the city is trying to keep the sidewalks clear.

Other parts of the city have encampments dotted around,… [more]

I meant to add, I think there's also more mental illness visible downtown, but my suspicion is that the amount hasn't changed, it's just at the forefront because of the lack of daily commuters, so as a percentage of the people you see, it's higher.
