Help me be a better runner.
A few things.

1) If you forefoot or midfoot strike, make sure you do calf strengthening exercises apart from running. I switched my gait at someone's suggestion, and within two weeks got a bad calf injury because I wasn't careful. I love the difference, but you have to be careful.

2) What phrases do you chant to yourself when you feel like your legs are made of rubber and you just want to stop but don't? My words are my… [more]

Films with great soundtracks?
The Matador Flamenco and The Cramps. You might need to see the movie (well, you should see the movie) for the soundtrack to cohere well.

How do I do this in Excel?
Contextures has good stuff, but my go-to for more advanced Excel is Chandoo. Tons, tons of tips and tricks, great forums, and some online courses.

First steps for a community cinema
You might reach out to the people at the Grand Illusion in Seattle. It's a non-profit theater run by volunteers, and someone there might be able to answer some of your questions.

Suggestions for awesome and unusual Advent calendar that can ship to the UK before, like, July?
I don't know how fast it ships, but The Whiskey Advent Calendar seems pretty cool.

Getting a referral for physical therapy after pregnancy
Are you asking for a referral because you don't know how to pick one, or because your insurance needs it?

Some insurance carriers don't require a referral for PT (Premera, for example allowed me to self-refer).

If you need help picking a good one, for someone in the Seattle area, I'd highly recommend Olympic Physical Therapy. Great providers, great customer service. They also have an attached training group called Athletic Engineering, if… [more]

Get me far on $25 in Portland
I'm don't live in Portland (thus, may fail at the "Portland Foodies" part of your question), but The Observatory has my favorite dessert ever. To wit:

Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Parfait- chocolate cookie crust layered with peanuts topped with pretzel ice cream and chocolate ganache

It is even more amazing ingested than read.

Also, they have tasty cocktails.

What about All Sorts?

You'd have to find some with just black and white pieces, then pick through them.

Help me find lyrics of Knee Play 4 from “Einstein on the Beach” by Philip Glass
I think it's "Fa Sol La Mi", if I recall correctly.

I'll see if I can find my copy, I think the original booklet contained the lyrics...

Indeed, I just looked at the Wikipedia article. I had left the "l" off when I first wrote the answer...

Would that be calmotic or chaolm?
This is running, for me. There's a huge amount of activity in systems throughout my body, but when I'm dialed in to proper form and rhythm, it feels as if I'm gliding effortlessly through space.

I'm *not* going to stand outside holding a boombox over my head.
Follow-up, if anyone's interested: The whole story is more complicated than I was able to post here (which is probably true for lots of askmes), so I can understand why some might think they don't know what they want, or why I should just walk away. I chose to send a carefully crafted follow-up email along the lines some suggested here. I heard yesterday that they've reconsidered and have now asked me to come back in for another round of interviews. Exciting stuff!

You mean I'm only spending two hours a week on Project X?
I don't have Outlook in front of me, and I can post more tomorrow. But if you change the view to "By Category", then "Customize Current View", you can apply a filter. The filtered list can be selected (ctrl-a), copied, and pasted into a spreadsheet. You'll need to make sure you get the fields you need when you copy the filtered list.

As I said, I'll get you the exact steps tomorrow.
posted to Ask MetaFilter by Gorgik at 9:05 PM on August 22, 2012
Ok, here you go:

View>Current View>By Category

You can just select all>copy>paste into Excel from there.

Or, if you want to filter the list,

View>Current View>Customize Current View, and select "Filter". You can set a filter, then select the results and paste into Excel.

Again, not exactly what you asked for, but Synecdoche, New York is a deeply nested movie about a guy writing a play about his own life, which includes him writing the play, etc, etc.

how can i make my personal training sessions more effective?
Awesome work! Two things that have helped me in a similar situation. First, learn core stuff you can do on your own (planks, for example), and do them each day, or however often you want. Your core supports everything else you do, so being strong through your core is key. Second, learn how to stretch properly, and do that on your own as well. Not only will stretching help you prevent injury through your increased exercise, it just feels good. Ask your trainer to teach you stretches to do,… [more]

What are the best ways to increase Excel skills?
Chandoo offers some courses and tons of online lessons/tutorials. I think he's targeting exactly the level you're talking about, with most of what's posted.

I haven't tried the paid classes, but I love the stuff I've used.

Your persona here.
Buckethead. See the video (with Les Claypool) The Ballad Of Buckethead, the old(ish) album Bucketheadland. The mythos has evolved over time, but there's a whole universe, with friends, enemies and locales.

Care to chime in on my sinus issues?
I had chronic nasal polyps for many years (no allergies). Drugs were not effective, the only thing that worked was surgery. Like, every two or thee years, enough times that I can't remember how many it's been, easily 15 over the course of my life.

When I moved to Seattle, I eventually connected with Dr. Anonsen at Overlake. We did a few rounds of surgery, mostly successful in the short term. Then she put me on a sinus rinse (using a compounded prescription of… [more]

Like a moth to a naked light.
Way back when, I was encouraged to engage the professors I was interested in working with, to help make my application stand out. It sounds like you've done that, although you say "meet with".

I sent out a bunch of letters (I did say "way back when") requesting pre-prints of current work. Almost everyone wrote back with papers and an invitation to give them a call if I had questions or wanted to discuss the work. So I read all the papers I got,… [more]

What to do after domestic violence?
"What am I supposed to do now?"

This is a hard question to answer here. One of the crisis lines can help you sort out the legal questions you have, and others have posted some contact info for them.

But the bigger question of what you do can only be answered by you. Moving out is one thing you might do, if that's what you want. Getting a protection order is another, if your relationship is over and you're worried that he's going to… [more]

2) Get multiple rescue inhalers, and keep them in several places (home, backpack, etc). That way you won't be without one, even if you forget.

3) Learn about your illness, and how to take care of it. Learn how it works, what it does, how it feels, and understand it. I think it's probably easier on adults, but asthma… [more]

Anon, I work for an organization that provides support and information services to people in situations like yours. We can assist you with navigating through the different choices you have, and connect you with agencies that help with housing, counseling, etc.

Normally we only handle cases through the police or local hospitals, but memail me if you'd like our contact information and a referral (I would have suggested this in my previous answer, but needed to get it cleared first).

Non-cheap, non-cheesy gifts for an office.
Two things two different years, both from the same vendor. 1) Some locally (to them) made chocolate covered potato chips. They were very strange, but the fact that they were from the vendor's town made them really cool. 2) A mug with a pithy saying, also local to the vendor's location. We had a good relationship with them, and see local stuff made it extra nifty that they sent us something.
