Books to read in the aftermath of rape
I've read parts of The Courage To Heal, and a friend who worked on a university campus supporting assault victims just recommended it again for your request.

The framing is as a resource for survivors of child sexual abuse, and there are probably stories of abuse, but the parts about steps, healing, etc are great.

Good luck

Books about sheltered people becoming worldly
MeFi favorite Riddley Walker, although the prose, while good, is challenging.

"Thanks for loaning me your socks. I gutter go out and pick up a spare pair for myself soon."

I guess that's not a pun about socks, though.

Excruciating back pain - what to do next?
I was off work for 10 weeks with an L3-L4 herniation. For the first 5 I was in excruciating pain unless I was on my back. I had two injections, took a bunch of painkillers, gabapentin, and did a ton of physical therapy focused on my core (that PT went on for six months). The injections were not the instant relief that some others report, and my second doctor set that expectation with me.

I couldn't have taken a trip to the grocery store, much less gone on vacation,… [more]

Corin Tucker's wailing may not be your thing, but the drawn out

Are there any other mixes like Svantana's "Working As A Waitress"
Sounds like James Corden's "First Line, Every Line" game.

OMG, this is my new favorite thing.

There's a Delicatus at Benaroya Hall
The West Edge Market on Harbor Steps has pretty good sandwiches
Baguette Box is not far from you, and while it's not what it used to be, it's still a good value.

Where should we eat after seeing Hamilton?
Thanks all, we did Larb Ubol, and it was exactly what we wanted.

FYI we tried Bali Nusa Indah first, but it appears it's closed.

Now that we've been here once, I realize that there are lots of options we could find that wouldn't be a problem. So thanks for all the suggestions!

Book recommendations for extended travel in southeast Europe
I liked The Historian a great deal. It's long and slow and creepy and interesting, with history and location information against a supernatural mystery

Of what can you acquire a billion easily and inexpensively?
Depending on how many people will be there you could combine a billion nanoliters of gin with a billion nanoliters of grapefruit juice.

Interesting short walks in downtown Seattle
There is a fascinating construction site at (or near) Denny and Minor. I have no idea what they are building (nor have I tried to find out), but what they've put up so far is baffling and totally photogenic. Google Maps says it's a 15 min walk from Westlake.

Not nearly as interesting a final form as I'd hoped, but the site still looks pretty interesting right now.

Please help me not be sick all the time
IANAD, although I am someone who has asthma, terrible sinuses and had GERD.

Two things you might (have your doctors) investigate are:

The connection between GERD and asthma, start here and here.

The other is something called Samter's triad, which is a link between asthma, sinus polyps/issues and aspirin (and other NSAID) sensitivity. Even if you do not have polyps (and unless your ENT specifically looked for them, you… [more]

How to prevent online spending with Apple TV
Thanks, everyone. The situation has evolved since I asked, and this thread has helped immensely. FYI, Apple TV and iPads are frustratingly similar in that the Restrictions passcode is good and works well, but doesn't prevent someone from resetting the device, which wipes out the restrictions. We're going to go with pre-paid cards and gift cards, and after much discussion and fretting all the existing credit cards have been cancelled.

Fuck cancer.

How can I verify whether somebody is detained by the NYPD?
As sacrifix, I have no experience with NYPD. But in Seattle you're only held for 4-6 hours at the most in one of the the precincts, and then transferred to the King County Jail (that's before the suspect goes before a judge). That register is updated immediately, so you can usually find people very fast after the arrest (4-6 hours, that is).

As far as I know, though, you can't just call the police and ask if someone has been arrested, but I've never tried. You could… [more]

Best cheap or free resources for learning R?
I too am new to R. I'm currently taking a class that is focused on data mining and machine learning, and found these to be very helpful (there are four different "getting started" tutorials):

The context is a machine-learning contest, but they cover the basics pretty well.

Replacing driver's seat due to back pain?
We have an older car with worn seats, and got something similar to one of these. They are pricey, but great, and I use them with other cars as well. They are stiff and keep you up and forward.

We initially purchased ours when I herniated a disc in my back, but use them now because they feel better.

Take-out dinner in downtown Seattle?
Weekday or weekend?

Belle Epicurean has an outlet not far from the library. They do pastries and sandwiches for breakfast and lunch, but are open until 5p during the week.

If you can walk to 1st/University, about 5 blocks NW of the library, go to Lecosho. I'm sure they'd give you a to-go box.

Help us donate to a charity working for peace in the middle east
Seeds of Peace does many things, their camp brings kids across conflict lines together to teach respect and understanding.

I donated to them a while ago as part of an inheritance. About a year later, I ended up working with someone who had gone through the program. It turns out that our heritages put us on opposite sides of the I/P conflict. He said, waxing poetic about the program, "I'm not sure I could have talked to you, much less worked with you, before going… [more]

Reset Northridge 2000 gas valve
Ah, calling people! Who knew you could do that? Vendor was very helpful with some suggestions that I'll try later today, and he said if they don't work he'll send someone out to fix it.

Seattle specific: Where should we have lunch tomorrow?
I have not been there, but http://lotusasiankitchen.net/ is from the people at Green Leaf, purveyors of some of the best Vietnamese in the city. It's about a block from V-M.

Sugar Bakery, just up the block, also has some lunch stuff, and excellent cookies.

I want to give money away. I can't seem to figure out how.
Find organizations that run transitional housing programs. See if they will help you coordinate direct donations to the people in the program to assist them with getting on their feet, setting up their apartments, etc.

You have to find the right organization that will allow you to do this, but it can be done.

It's a little like the holiday "adopt-a-family" thing, but you can do it year-round.
