History books of the Pac NW
I liked Seattle: Past To Present. It can be a little dry in places (hah!), but it is interesting, and goes into detail about events and people that other histories do not. I believe he wrote it as part of a thesis.

On Preview: Sons of the Profits is very entertaining as well, but more lightweight.

A question about therapy
I was suicidal through high school, college and graduate school. Therapy kept me alive then. More recently, it helped me understand that not only was I still self-destructive (albeit more subtly), but it helped me explore the roots of those feelings and how they were expressed in my life. Once I recognized the pattern/cycles for what they were, I was able to change them. My health improved significantly (lost a significant amount of weight, became fit, etc) once I was able to control it.… [more]

Epidural steroids for herniated lumbar disc + sciatica?
Last Sept. I had an L3-L4 disc bulge that caused sciatic pain so intense I couldn't stay upright (sitting or standing) for more than a few minutes. I had two injections. The first one took about a week to start working, and took my pain down about 30%-40%. The second, 2.5 weeks after the first, took the pain most of the rest of the way down. Between those, PT and acupuncture, I was mobile again after about 5 weeks, and recovered enough to return to work after another 3. I was essentially… [more]

Let's get physical (in fiction)
"Liar" by Justine Larbalestier has an avid teenage runner as a central character, and running is a central theme in the book.

It'll be a much, much more enjoyable read if you don't learn anything else about it before picking it up.

How to get Excel to play nice?
I'd do by setting up three columns. One is for the server name, the other is for the date, the last is for the hour of the event [=HOUR(A2)]. Once you have all the data in this format, generate a pivot table with the server name and hour as row labels, and the date as a column label. It's not a graph, but it will show you where you have spikes.

If you really need a graph, you could manipulate the pivot table data into a format that you could then graph.

I don't know about "beautiful", but Daniel Pinkwater has some great kids' books. Tooth Gnasher Superflash was a favorite among the preschool kids I used to teach. Funny, cool pictures, stuff the kids remembered.

Resources for abusive spouses seeking help?
The city of Seattle has a resource page for abusers. I'm only familiar with Wellspring, having seen some pretty compelling presentations from them.

Even if you aren't in Seattle, your ex might reach out to them and see if they have suggestions for local to him resources.

They can't help, though, if the person perpetrating the abuse doesn't want to change.

This rock chick needs more rock chicks to listen to.
Nothing new to suggest really, but I love Sleater-Kinney and Neko Case.

For Neko Case, try the New Pornographers. She doesn't sing on all their recordings, but Mass Romantic has a lot of her.

RE: Sleater-Kinney, I'd suggest One Beat and All Hands on the Bad One. I really like the first song on All Hands On the Bad One.

Trying out team sports when out of shape
I joined an adult kickball league some time ago (part of http://www.underdogseattle.com/), and I was significantly overweight and out of shape. I knew the team captain, and we were playing at the lowest competitive level, where most participants were out to have a good time (not really aggressive about competition). Everyone was supportive as I lumbered around the bases, and it was a lot of fun.

The team didn't get back together the next year, and my interests veered… [more]

Dealing with muscle soreness when returning to jogging
I've found dynamic warmups before running and static stretching after to be helpful.

I have quad soreness as well, and the best warmups for me have been walking lunges. For stretching after, try the hip quad stretch. There are a ton of general guides online, for example, here and here

Really, though, make sure you're taking care of all the muscles in your legs and hips so they support and enforce each other.

The other… [more]

Sci-Fi / Fantasy Novels with Travel to Unique and Well-Imagined Places
Child of Fortune, by Norman Spinrad, is about a young girl taking her wanderjahr, and her travels to different planets. If you read it and like it, please then try The Void Captain's Tale, set in the same universe but is a radically different story about adults.

Friend just gave birth. Leaving her husband. What does she need to know?
Two things off the bat. She needs to be careful about preventing the father from seeing the child. The terms "custodial interference" and "kidnapping" come to mind, and if he's hostile towards her he could pursue those claims simply out of spite, even if he doesn't want to have anything to do with the child.

Secondly, she should contact a Domestic Violence organization. Even if she doesn't want their services broadly speaking, this is one of the… [more]

We just came back from a trip to CHI.

Try to make time to take one of the Architecture Foundation tours. We did the Boat Tour and the Modern Skyscrapers. Both were really cool.

The three standout food things we did were Blackbird (fancy), Hot Doug's (not fancy but a little pricy, but get there before they open or you'll be waiting in line for 30-60 minutes, I'd guess), and Katherine Anne Confections

Novice runner (k)needs help!
A few things:

1) Make sure you are stretching appropriately after running. Not that weird bouncy stuff you see people doing when you're out and about, but appropriate post-workout stretching. If you have a PT, they can make suggestions, or you can look online

2) Don't think of your knees in isolation, but as part of a larger chain of muscles/systems that work together in running. Make sure you're taking care of the chain, if one part's weak,… [more]

Seattleites! Would this be a stupidly long commute?
Licton Springs is West of Maple Leaf (opposite side of I-5), near Northgate Mall and the Northgate Transit Center.

We live in the neighborhood and commute downtown, and you have a few options. You can walk, drive or bus (or cycle, for that matter) to the transit center, and take the 41 (~15-20 minutes) or the 66 (~25 minutes), both faster than the 358, and not as weird. Depending on where you are, there's a slower bus (the 316) that also goes downtown (~35 min). We… [more]

What to do about a muscle strain 1 wk before my 1st 1/2 marathon?
I've used eccentric heel exercises to great effect. There are lots online; but I focus on raising fast/lowering slowly.

I'm currently in a similar position as you. I was going to run i a 10 mile race today, but strained my calf about ten days ago. The heel raises helped, and were it not for a (separate) hernia I'd be running today.

Of course, a doctor is a better source of info, but that's what has worked for me

Another "What book did I read?" question!
Longshot suggestion.

The play Equus is about (sort of) mental illness and features horses. There aren't scenes of people with horse heads (that I remember). However, advertisements for productions of the play had actors with horse heads moving around on stage.

For me, powerful images like this can get mashed up with the narrative.

Should I try to pursue this job further?
Whether you should or not depends on what you think you have to lose.

I was in a similar situation about 6 months ago, although I had actually done an extensive set of face-to-face interviews. When they passed, I was crushed. I got a little more specific feedback than you did, and after thinking about it and spending three intense days drafting it, I sent an email to the hiring manager about why I thought they should reconsider.
