A Free Download Now and Forever
“The Anarchist’s Tool Chest”
is now available as a free download! Written by Christopher Schwarz and first published in June 2011, “The Anarchist’s Tool Chest” is revered by many as a philosophical tome as well as a how-to book. The book includes instructions for building your own tool chest, as demonstrated here by MetaFilter's Own™ and JimCoin™ creator bondcliff!
Looking for a blogging theme like kottke
I really like the simplicity of Kottke and TheMarginalia and Waxy — a blog with a front page that contains all (or most) of the content of each post, with links embedded to other parts of the web. However, I have yet to find a Wordpress or Ghost or [insert other system] theme that duplicates this layout. Rather, all themes I've found have a front page that shows an excerpt that links to a full post that then has those other links. I do not like this. Do you know of such a theme? What am I missing?

Movie: When Evil Lurks
In a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man. When a wealthy neighbor convinces them to help him get rid of the man, everything goes terribly wrong.
Erma Bombeck, stand-up comedian
I don't know if the name Erma Bombeck means anything these days. For decades she epitomized a middle America observational kind of humor that was present in a lot of magazines about suburban life. While most of her material was written, she did put out one comedy album: The Family That Plays Together (Gets On Each Other's Nerves) [YT playlist, 1977]. I don't know if we have any equivalent voice in America today and maybe not all the humor works today, but this is a historical document that I got on vinyl from the Columbia House Record Club, and I'm happy to share it here today.

Best shape of your life in your 40s?
Kind of chat-filtery, but looking for people who want to share a story about being in the best shape of your life in your 40s. How did it happen? How did/do you ward off injury? What are your favorite types of activities? What are your challenges and successes?
Masks of Nyarlathotep & Other Non-Fantasy Actual Play Podcasts
Looking for recommendations for non-D&D/Pathfinder/Fantasy actual play podcasts. Preference given to Delta Green and Call of Cthulhu, especially Masks of Nyarlathotep campaigns.

WHY DON'T WE JUST KILL THE KID IN THE OMELAS HOLE, by Isabel J. Kim. An excellent Omelas riff that's just what it sounds like.
Finding the Air Cannon
For about three weeks, folks living in Corvallis, OR have had their sleep disrupted by a sound of mysterious origin. Retired software engineer K Lars Lohn engaged in some clever acoustic detective work to pinpoint the source.
Faircamp: Like bandcamp but Free
A beautiful and free platform for Musicians.
In the aftermath of Epic selling Bandcamp to Songtradr, Bandcamp has found itself in a place of instability. Half of the company’s employees were laid off post-acquisition, leading many to speculate over the beloved platform’s future. Most importantly, many artists who depended on the service are left looking for alternatives.
What's the best news newsletter?
I've been subscribing to the Need2Know email newsletter for years because I loved that it was a brief, simple recap of the 10 biggest news stories of the day. Unfortunately, now that their parent company has been acquired, the newsletter is just a list of 5 clickbait links and no longer the useful daily news recap I liked before. What's the replacement?
Movie: Bottoms
Unpopular best friends PJ and Josie start a high school fight club to meet girls and lose their virginity. They soon find themselves in over their heads when the most popular students start beating each other up in the name of self-defense.
A daily visit to Hotel Fred
Roger Langridge
is a cartoonist. Every morning, he draws a four panel strip about whatever happens to be on his mind and posts it online. Some are about the everyday trials and delights of family life, some are about his dog and others simply rif on what the medium can do. I like them a lot.

US Chess President lashes out at victims and their allies

Movie Trailers Website That Doesn't Suck
Welp, trailers.apple.com sucks now. Where can I go for a simple, up-to-date chronological listing of movie trailers with wide coverage (i.e. pretty much every movie that will get a US cinematic release) that is uncluttered, ad-free, gets right to the point, and doesn't require an app?
The Cost of Living/Housing Crisis
Here's why Americans can't stop living paycheck to paycheck
- "The typical worker takes home $3,308 per month after taxes and benefits, based on the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But when you take a look at the cost of some of the most essential expenses today, it's easy to see why consumers feel strained." [link-heavy FPP! :]
The Greatest Animated Series in the Surreal Sci-Fi Toilet Horror Genre
Skibidi Toilet [SLYT] is a series of so far 55 minute-long animated episodes featuring an invasion of roving heads-in-toilets taking over the world as they sing remixes of "Brr Skibidi Dop Dop Dop Dop Yes Yes Yes Yes" by Turkish music group Biser King. (CW: Mild jump scares)
Blessed Are The Noisemakers
DJ Food has opened for Art Of Noise twice, once in 2018 and again in 2023. In each occasion, he created a sound collage of work from across the AON spectrum. The individual members are prolific on their own, so while the mixes stray far from AON sources, the journey of each of these mixes is surprising and engaging and remains true to the original group. Blessed Are The Noisemakers - Before, Behind & Beyond The Art of Noise [1h36m, 2018] and Blessed Are The Noisemakers (Diversion 2) [1h34m, 2023] are both posted to Mixcloud.
Art & ACT -- the remnants of Art Of Noise
In 1985 , after one album using new technology and generating a market-changing single, three-fifths of Art Of Noise departed the ZTT music label for greener pastures. The remaining duo, Trevor Horn and Paul Morley vowed to continue at ZTT but didn't. The Art & ACT project's [Facebook post about history] manifesto remains yet to be found, but Life's A Barrel Of Laughs [YT playlist ~20m, linktree to various sources], the audio component has finally been released. This is mostly of interest to AON completionists, but it is of interest nonetheless.
Substitute for Snacking
I work from home and have gotten into the unfortunate habit of grabbing something to eat every time I'm stressed out. I'm looking for substitute stress relieving activities that won't impact my work.
Can we please stop using the term "wheelchair bound" on MetaFilter?
Recently I have noticed several different commenters on MetaFilter using the phrase "wheelchair bound." This is a phrase that a lot of wheelchair users (including myself) find deeply objectionable, as wheelchairs actually give us freedom of movement compared to not having a wheelchair. (Also, a lot of wheelchair users are ambulatory wheelchair users, e.g. they can sometimes walk a very short distance.) The preferred term is "wheelchair user". If using it as an adjective, you can say "wheelchair using", e.g. "My wheelchair-using girlfriend."

Offer, Emoji, Consideration
A Saskatchewan court has ruled that (in certain circumstances) an emoji can constitute a digital signature accepting the terms of contract.
Olivia Chow, mayor of Toronto
After two (and a fraction) terms of the inane, waffling, conservative bootlicking John Tory (who resigned after it was discovered he was schtupping a staffer), preceeded by a term of the odious and idiotic Rob Ford resulting in over 13 years of ponderously ineffective governance, Toronto has finally elected a progressive, visionary mayor: Olivia Chow -- immigrant, Chinese, a master of grass-roots organizing, and the widow of much lamented Jack Layton. I'mma editorialize further: we're giddy up here.
Not even dying is an escape.
"On March 3, a largely unknown creator named Steve ‘Veddge’ Nelson shared an unassuming-sounding mod on the Doomworld forums. He claims this is an enhanced version of a 15-year-old "my own house but full of demons" map file (who hasn’t tried to make one of those?) left behind by a recently deceased friend. Tragic, but curious."

King of the Delta Blues Liars
Digging into Robert “Mack” McCormick’s archives to find out what he had learned about Robert Johnson uncovered a writer far more complicated and problematic than his subject.
A lifetime of old-fashioned research repeatedly failed to deliver multiple projects, yet the one everyone was after was a completed manuscript on Robert Johnson.
Texas Monthly finally gets to write the story about the story.
